Question: Why does our OC not send Milroe in to run the wildcat?

I look at it this way, if he is willing to be a Taysom Hill utility knife guy, then you can use him in Punt formation as protection, as an H-Back, on an end around -- and always have to worry that he's capable of throwing out of those formations -- then he would be truly a lethal addition to the offense.

That dude is making $10M/year -- so....there is that
Yes, this is the way he could be used like the OP is suggesting, but I think it would come thru a permanent position change rather than sneak him in for a play or two to do a trick play.

If he could be a serviceable H-back OR "full back" (I can wish for that!) then yeah his "arm" might be used for a trick play, but I think the key would be he'd have to find a position he could log regular minutes in before "the trick play" thing would work.

Otherwise, you bring him in for one play and the whole stadium is on full alert that it could be a trick play.

As I mentioned up thread, the challenge for him would be beating out other players who were recruited to play the position he'd switch to.

That is an old article. What we saw in game situations is more current. He needs more practice. I hope he gets there. He would be super man if he was an efficient passer. I’m all for it.
Some guys freeze up when the lights come on. I played basketball with a practice all star. He was good in practice, but when we got in a game with fans in the stands and a bunch of guys from another school looking at him he melted. It was a mental block for him. I hope JM doesn't have that issue but for some guys it is hard to overcome when the stage is big.

That is true. Seen them myself. By practice I mean the whole ball of wax. Game time, development, whatever it takes.

He`s too good of an athlete to squander by playing out of position or not at all. Once the new OC comes in ( please, God ! ), I hope there`s a concerted effort to get this kid on the field. Otherwise, I think he may be portal bound.
I don't think there's a question about his athleticism. The question is more along the lines of is he an SEC caliber QB. Sometimes a high degree of raw athleticism and being a good QB overlap (Hooker at UT for example) and sometimes they don't (Stetson Bennett). Sometimes great athletes can hone all their skills and become great QBs (Jalen Hurts), but not all of them can. We don't yet know on Milroe, but he's got a long way to go. Right now after his second season in the program, he's not as capable of a QB as Jalen Hurts when he took his first snaps in his first game of his first season, and as we all know, Hurts had to put in a TON of work to where we saw it some in his 3rd year and Bama, but didn't really come into his own till his 4th season.

I'll also say there shouldn't be a "concerted effort" to focus on any one player to get them on the field. The coaches should focus on development of all the players - to get each of them to be the best they can be, and then put the best player for that role (QB or otherwise) on the field to give the TEAM the best chance for success.

Milroe looked really good passing and running in his high school highlights.

Jalen Hurts looked good throwing the ball in HS as well. He had much better presence than Milroe in his 1st game at USC but it took three seasons to get him to his performance in the SEC Championship game against Georgia. Not trying to be hyper negative. Just hard to believe that he can win in the SEC next season.

Hurts was always a good passer. His problem was not passing at all, when he should have. Instead, he would take off running. And defenses were ready for that. Then Dan Enos came in as quarterback coach. And we saw the result in the SEC Championship game. Milroe is a good passer. His problem was being thrust suddenly into big games late in the season. The stage fright in front of 100,000 screaming fans caused him some problems. He still completed 50% of his passes. He will improve on that, once he settles down and gets comfortable. I'm not judging him based on one or two games. Many here on TideFans didn't think Mac would do well. He threw 2 pick sixes against Auburn. But we saw how good he was in the 2020 season. Milroe will definitely have competition, with Ty and the incoming freshmen sensations. But unless something changes, I see Milroe starting in September. If so, I will support and encourage him completely. If he plays to his ability, he'll be dangerous and exciting to watch.

I admit to not being an expert at throwing the football but I have watched hundreds of pitchers coming up including several who are in the majors. The point is their stroke and how they throw out front and stay on top of the ball. It becomes obvious quickly.

I don't agree technically with your assessment with Milroe or Hurts as "good" passers. Not really worth further debate. I will say this kid Jaden Daniels at LSU has about all of the "it" factor that can be packaged in a QB. They are going to be a handful for everyone in the SEC this year.

Being a good passer is more about the results IMO. Take Philip Rivers as an example. Scouts said he was too side-armed but look what he did at NC State and in the NFL.

I saw Jalen get good results when he'd stand in and deliver.

I haven't seen that yet for JM, in the limited times we've witnessed.

I enjoyed watching Rivers through his career. I believe that his Dad was Coach at Athens High School where Philip played . It was reported that his Dad forced him to throw a full sized ball from an early age thus the short armed throw he developed. Later in his career I had the impression he became more out front in his throwing motion and was obviously very effective.

He ended up being a big miss for Bama and Auburn. NC St. isn't the tip of the recruiting spear.

I know we said the same thing about Jalen at one point, but the difference is Jalen had arm and passing potential that surpassed where JM is right now. Jalen Hurts needed to learn to do one thing: be a QB in the pocket, not a scrambler.

JM has a nice strong arm (that's been demonstrated on a few bombs) but I've seen very little evidence that he's got the arm talent to throw the other type of passes he needs to throw.

So I agree and think he'll either change positions OR transfer if he loses the job to TS or one of the true freshmen.
My guess is Jason will go thru the Portal if he loses the starting job.
Among other things we need our starter to throw short passes, swing passes and to drop a Bomb on occasion. I don't see JM doing that.

They were at either Austin or Decatur high school but moved up to Athens when Phillip started playing. If I am not mistaken NC State wanted him as a quarterback while Alabama and Auburn wanted him to play tight end, mainly due to his size and his throwing technique. I watched him play throughout high school and most don't know he was a really good safety (by high school standards) and ended up with several interceptions in his career.
