Will Bama offer Smelley now?

I seriously, seriously doubt it....

they made it pretty clear "a while back" according to Smelley that he wasn't going to get an offer.

Baseball has played a large roll most people don't realize and with him performing in camp in front of the staff and not getting an offer....that's pretty telling.

I've been told by some reliable sources that it would've had to have been an "athletic" type QB for us to really go after one.

I don't know that Smelley would really help us out other than adding depth. I don't think he would have been able to beat out JPW or Barnes. More than likely he would ride the bench for at least 3 years. Tebow on the other hand may have challenged for playing time much much sooner.

I agree. The QB position this year was an all or nothing kinda deal because if we end up with nothing (which we have) it's not a real issue. JPW is going to VERY good.

I really hope we dont let another rivers get away.
Not trying to be argumentative for the sake of arguing... but this is usually an idea that cannot hold water except for the very best of athletes. More than likely, Rivers would have never touched the field over either Watts/Zow/Croyle due primarily to Fran's offensive style (in fact Croyle was not his "type"). Just like Markus Manson from last year, there is no guarantee that he would have even been on the depth chart this year for us (though he was for the Gators). In a nutshell, some players do well because they perfectly "fit" the system that they go into. Now... take Chris Smelley... he seems to be tailor made for CSS's offense and he likely will do well there. However, just because he does well there is NO guarantee that he would have ever progressed past 3rd string for us. Hindsight, my friend, is ALWAYS 20/20. ;)

I don't think if I were in his shoes that I would even consider an offer from UA right now. He's got himself in a good situation. I don't think that we give him an offer, but if we did, it would look like "Hey we didnt get what we wanted, but you're better than nothing." Nobody wants to play second fiddle. But then again, I dont know the entire story and what went on behind closed doors, I just know the bits and pieces of the story that fall out.

I hope JPW is going to be VERY good, there is a lot resting on his shoulders. I think maybe we put all of eggs in one basket and then we dropped it.

In the Insurance business we call a Tim Tebow a China Egg - pretty to look at - but not gonna do you much good, especially if it is owned by someone else.

It is very clear that Shula did not want Smelley on his team period. I don't care what his reason is, but he clearly has one. I think it was TT or bust this recruiting class and that's all. I also think that if you asked either player they would tell you exactly the same thing on what Shula told them.

I highly doubt Bama would go after Smelley with him being committed to South Carolina. If he was to come calling to Bama and de-commit from USC they would probably consider it but I doubt that would happen since he didn't wait for an offer and Smelley seems firm with South Carolina. Plus that may jepordize Earl Alexander since he wants a shot at QB. I am not saying they won't go after another top QB if one is available but I wouldn't think Smelley would be an option. Stranger things have happened in recruiting but I just don't think it is likely.

Smelley's father apparently was a problem insisting that his son play baseball (he is his HS baseball coach) and CMS is against this although I believe he has given JPW special dispensation to play.

ChattBritt,
You are right and I do think that Coach Shula would have been more open to Smelley playing baseball if we were in need for a QB this year. But the fact is we have some quality depth at QB whereas we didn't when we signed JPW.
as it stands we have on scholly:
1. John Parker Wilson- an Army All American
2. Jimmy Barnes- a nationally top 20 high school QB from California
3. Jimmy Johns- Mr. Mississppi and an all-around excellent athletic QB/RB/LB
4. Marc Guillon- a talented but injury proned QB.

Well said. We have plenty of talent at the QB position, and they are young. What we'll miss is an experienced playcaller, and Tim wasn't going to fill that role anyway. I don't blame CMS for pursuing him, as he would have been an excellent addition to our team - but I don't think his decision breaks (or would have "made") our recruiting class. We already have a top ten class according to some. Andre Smith and/or a couple of others committing will make a much bigger difference.

I'm very excited to see who our QB will be next year. I wish Tim luck in the SEC East, and I hope we have the opportunity to make him fear our defense in the years to come :cool2:

Another thing...

Just a gut feeling, but I usually have pretty good ones.

I think Shula's primary reason for pursuing Tebow was not based on his obvious athleticism, but rather his leadership ability and personality. I feel like Shula wanted that kind of hard-working, well-mannered, humble and family-oriented type of person to be a team leader and builder.

Sure his athletic ability was important, but I believe Shula was really hoping to get a bonafide leader out of Tebow.

I don't think he sees that in Smelley or perhaps the other QB's already on board.

C Smelley situation

IMO baseball had a factor in the recruitmrnt of CS. C S just was not offered b/c.......... CMS made a vow to TT that he was the guy and that we would not pursue another qb. I hope this decision to pursue the lost cause of getting TT is not the reason of not recruiting a legit 4* that Pete Carrol,SOS,and fat Phil offered is justified. In the case of TT, I just think that the opportunity to compete for early pt and a shot at starting early had a major influence on TT decision. Also,I read on TT visit to USC how he was rethinking his options after seeing a team get dominated by thier rival. Also, factor in UF domination of F$U while he was in attendance had to sway him no little amount. OK add up this life long gator, parents are allums, brother is there now, chief competion transfers,C Leak has only 1 year left. However, the biggest tip off is every player linked to TT has committed or is leaning to UF.It was a futile effort and a long shot at best. I really feel that home town kids just are hard to beat on their love for UA and it a shame to not pursue the ones most likely to make an impact on the program. Yes,CS would take 2-3 years before he would factor in at QB,but just remember Brodie played in the same HS div. and was a good prospect. I do not feel any anger at TT for going with where his heart is,just wish CS had the offer to go where his heart is. I just believe we may regret this week alot more later for many reasons.

What an insult an offer to Smelley would be NOW ?!? - Besides, he'd be pretty unstable if he jumped around from commitment to commitment - the kid's already committed to South Carolina...Good Grief.

Does that mean that the kid that first committed to WVA then committed to Bama and the two kids committed to UT and Clemson but are considering us are unstable? The recruiting process is long and pressure packed, kids will get a good feeling about a certain coach or school and commit but later have a change of heart.....nothing new.
I think Smelley is sticking with USC but wouldn't want to call him "unstable" if he changes his mind. JMHO
