Fighting Irish Ghosts

Who was it that said football Polls make strange bedfellows?
ND is one of the least liked programs in the nation not just by us, but by most programs who have to see things like majpr networks kissing thier (schedules)
BUT if by winning a foothball game they actually help the Tide I suppose with great reluctance I will say I hope they win by a point.
I also hope they have to one day come to Bryant Denny but that may require divine intervention. So help us out, Irish.
Roll Tide

Go Trojans

Sometimes, we use words that really don't mean such as hate, but I really do HATE Notre Lame! The school, the students, the alumni, the aura surrounding them, the fans, the tv deal with NBC, everything! You think if they beat USC, that the Trojans will drop far from the polls? No. Maybe 3 or 4 but not as much to help us move up. I hate them more than UcheaT and the Barners, combine. I get more excited when they lose than I do when we win. You know I will be singing Rocky Top when UcheaT plays them later on in the year. So go forth, Men of Troy, and destroy them into oblivion.

Why do think I choose "da_sack86" as my screen name

Bottom line is somebody (prob more than one) has got to lose ahead of us...so USC is running out of chances to lose, so ND needs to pull it off...what would be ideal is if ND can beat USC and then Tenn turn around and beat ND...they are THE media darling, I know we get good press as does Texas and others, but ND playing for the title would be a media dream...they're automatically guaranteed a BCS bowl berth if they win 10 games...so maybe if UT beats them they'll be 9-2 or whatever...go Irish (this week)! RTR...

Pull for ND?

Nope. Can't do it. Reasons? a) I remember 1966, though only barely, and b) I was there live & in person in the rain for the 24-23 Sugar Bowl.

I couldn't pull for the viles last night either.

What's that? Get over it? Nah...I've nurtured this intense dislike of both teams for most of my life. I think I'll stick w/ my, ummm...., intense dislike of both teams.

I'll pull mightily for the Bears & the Bruins though! :biggrin2:

Bama fans who hate ND are hypocrites.

When Tide fans act that way we are no better than Auburn. We make fun of the Barn for having a perpeptual chip on their shoulder because of their jealously of The Univeristy, but how is that any different for some fans reaction towards Notre Dame?

The only reason an Alabama fan would dislike Notre Dame is pure jealousy. Of course only a fool would actually be jealous of ND, but its obvious some fans can't help it. However, ND is one of the few programs that MIGHT have a better tradition than ours. I guess for some that concept is just too much to handle and they take on the "little brother" personna we usually see in wanna-be programs like the Barn.

So heck yeah, I am going to pull for Notre Dame. If they win, it helps us. Bottom line.

PS. What did the Notre Dame TEAM have to do with 1966? Did they vote?

Yeah! What he said.

It's over-simplifying...

things to say that what's behind the average Bama fan's dislike (much better word than "hate") is envy (much better than "jealously," which has a sexual context). Yes, I envy their "in" with the sports writers and networks. It's not fair. I'm sure, however, that a lot of fans of other schools are paying attention to the media love we're being shown and thinking "There they go again - worshipping Bama." We've not yet had our own national network, so I envy them. And, yes, I don't like them. However, I'm willing for them to win to help our ranking. My dislike for them's not that great... :D

Valid points. However, I still contend that the reasons many of us give for our 'dislike' and 'envy' of Notre Dame (power, media attention and bias, and obsession with traditon, etc..) are the same kind of reasons Auburn and other SEC teams give for their 'dislike' of Alabama.

Yes, a lot of our "power", and other reasons to 'dislike' us, has diminished over the past five years (or more). Still, the 'envy' other schools feels towards us goes back much longer and is extremely deep seeded, which again is analogous to our feeling towards Notre Dame. Otherwise why would anyone use what happen 40 years ago as a rationale for their 'dislike' of the Irish. A team's current status is not always key when it comes to a "tradition of dislike".

I'd like to see the BCS die.

How can we make THAT happen?

If I have to pull for Notre Dame to win ANY game in order for Bama to make it to the top, then let's get out of that deal.

USC may or may not lose between now and then. Same for Texas. Same for the rest of us.

I stopped worrying about some fool's poll a while back.

Me? I'd like me some tickets to Atlanta on December 3rd.

I have a pretty good idea who goes from the SEC East. They could easily be undefeated when they get there, too.

Now, say a team from the SEC West gets to Atlanta undefeated, and the winner of THAT game doesn't go to Pasadena.

That's what I expect to happen.

No need to be gracious about it after that.

The only way to satisfy everyone is for Bama to beat USC for the whole thing. If Texas gets in, their strength of schedule will be laughable. Beating Ohio State at the horseshoe doesn't look too good now that JoPa laid it on the king of sweater-vests. If ND does beat USC, the media will probably guarantee that they get in the Rose, even with a loss. And if they don't get in the Rose Bowl, finishing with a worse record than other teams has never stopped the AP from awarding them a title. VaTech and FreeShoesU will eliminate one or the other, but the question is will someone else beat the other one? I definitely want USC to go undefeated if the Tide is going to get a chance at the Rose Bowl, so that Bama can knock them back down to earth and protect the three-peat. That's alot of ifs, though.

This may seem blasphemous to some of you, but I like 'ol Charlie Weiss, even when he was at New England. He's one of the most decent, hard-working coaches out there with a good character, and I think he has the Irish on the right track.

It's not that I dislike USC (Pete Carroll's a great coach, too), but I'm ready for someone else at the top. I'll be pulling for Notre Dame, being their win would help us, and I'll be pulling for UCLA against USC at the end of their season, too.

If-if-if...

things get that far (:D ), I'd be more worried about the VT/FSU side of things. No matter who wins there, I don't see the winner losing again...

I won't pull for ND, but if they win and help us, I won't be too upset. I think if they win, we would need for them to lose later down the road even if we won out.

I have a feeling that if ND upsets USC they will vault up ahead of nearly everyone. So, I don't know who to pull for.

Redwood my good man, that is probably an understatement. If ND wins we may as well stop the season because the coaches and the press will award them the NC then and there.
