Welcome to Arkansas week, our first SEC test! I saw them vs Georgia last night and was impressed with some of their passes, but their defense looked weak. I thought I'd get a feel from some of you guys who are better at the X's & O's.

How do you think we will measure up against Arkansas?

Mallett looked unstoppable in the 1st half. However when Georgia was able to apply pressure, his rhythm was rattled and he was very average. I think there secondary has to be one of the worst I have seen in a while. The lack of a running game also hurt them. They had 24 rushes for 77 yards for a 3.2 ypc. I think they will be ready but if we make them one dimensional, I see us winning the game.

They have a scary offense and no defense to speak of. Seriously, they don't play defense - at all. If we take care of the ball and put pressure on Mallett, we win handily...

Once they realize they can not run on Bama, they will throw until Mallets arm falls off. We will probably get beat once or twice on the deep ball. Mallet will get tired of having his face knocked in the dirt around the middle of the 4th. Cody will collapse the pocket, Washington and Deaderick will be on the QB, with Rolo making a surprise appearance in the backfield everyonce in a while. Barron will knock someones helmet off, but to everyone's shock, the guys head will still be in it. Their "D" has no idea what its up against and will get tired of getting run over by Ingram, Richardson, Julio and pos. Bowman. JMHO. They will decide it would be better to just sit there and tussel with the "O" line.

I think we'll put together a clock eating, ball control offense and a stiff pass rush on defense to keep Mallett on his heels. I expect it to be close at halftime. Then we'll come out and take control in the 2nd half. But I do exect Mallett to burn us some in the first half. When he has time in the pocket he is very dangerous.

14.5 sounds good. I'd take that bet if I was a betting man. I think we win by 17.

my thoughts on Bama-ark?

1.) mallett is a dang good qb
2.) ark's defense is not very good
3.) ingram, richardson, upchurch (hopefully) and grant will combine to run for about 300+ yds....why? see #2 above
4.) Bama will control the LOS
5.) McElroy will be precise in reading the razorback D and will complete 70-75%or so of his passes
6.) Bama wins by 14-21 pts

Think that the DB's will be tested hard if no pass rush or pressure can be applied. Arkansas looked to be very weak in the middle of the secondary, could make for big day for (Peek). If Mallet stays on the run I don't think he will be effective against the D. :BigA:

IMO, Arkansas will be hard to handle. The reason I say that is because their QB has a cannon, and he will test out secondary early and often. If there has been one spot on our Defense that has concerned me so far this season, it's our secondary. Our defensive front needs to put pressure on him to keep him from firing away with the deep ball against our corners.

Arkansas will create some big plays with their passing attack, but they can't seem to run the football, and their defense may be worse than last year. I see a 45-21 type win for Alabama.

I wasn't impressed by Georgia's secondary at all. #2 looked lost most of the time. He might be an explosive player with the ball in his hands but he looked like a novice in the secondary. Mallet's mobility will be a problem for the Hog's in this game. He will have a great deal of pressure on him this week. I think his proficiency numbers will go down quite a bit.

We need to get the running game cranked up. Mallett can't hurt us if he's standing on the sideline watching.

I agree with my esteemed brother from Flomaton, I was impressed with the Mallet's deep throws down field his accuracy, which I imagine is due to him always throwing "down" field which at 6'8" is all the time. The key will be us controlling the ball and keeping him on the sideline much like we did Chris Leak for Florida a few years back after all their offence can't score if they're on the sideline. I think if Mt Cody lands on him once or twice he'll be a lot shorter.

From a defensive standpoint Arkansas looked like Swiss cheese last night. Georgia receivers running wide open across the middle, up the middle and simply all over the field either wide open or completely uncovered. There are so many big plays sitting out there for us to make, whether its running or passing. I'd like to mix in a big dose of power running against these guys while also passing on them so in the second half those "body blows" of running the ball will start to take it's toll.

Offensively they are quick and can sling the ball all over the field. They don't do a lot of running but they will slip their quick little running back the ball enough to keep the defense honest. Oh btw, he's fast. The key is to pressure Mallet and not let him set his feet.

I think this will give our coaches a good chance to iron out some kinks in the secondary and our secondary a good challenge to help them prepare for down the road. The good thing is with no defense, we get tested in our weak area without fearing a loss (unless we don't show up). I'm loving this year!

I agree. I remember a coach (I think either Stallings or Brother Bill) once stating that you must commit to be great at either coverage or pressure, because it is very difficult to be outstanding at both. Not impossible, but difficult.

Personally, i prefer seeing the opposing qb on the run and on his back.

After watching the UGA game, I can honestly say that if Joe Cox can throw for 375 yards and 5 TDs against this Arkansas defense, Greg McElroy will put up Texas Tech/Playstation stats. Easy win at home for the Tide.

I think that some people overlook the razorbacks or just assume that Arkansas is so deficient on defense that we'll roll over them like last year. I'm not so sure. This is really the first complete offense we've played all year and - though their D looks bad - they are an SEC defense that could force some mistakes.

Alabama is going to have to prove it's label as one of the best defensive teams in the nation Saturday because Mallet is going to test our secondary which has looked leaky at times and this is the first good pass blocking OL we've faced too.

The keys are:
- Limit the explosive plays by Arkansas. Make Mallet beat the defense by consistent execution not the "one big play" that automatically puts them in scoring range or gives them six outright.

- Minimize empty possessions on offense. Their offense can get hot for stretches, so it puts an emphasis on the offense not giving up turnovers and putting points on the board (preferably TDs).

- Identify what Arkansas' defensive intentions are early - my bet with their undersized D is that they will load the box - and attack them appropriately. I'm starting to feel confident in McElroy to execute a pass-based gameplan if it works to our advantage and Arkansas' pass defense looked shaky and exploitable against Georgia. Still, the run game will be key as an effective run attack will simply keep their offense off the field.

- Kick coverage. We're in the SEC schedule - and no offense to VT's Roberts and FIU's Hilton - the kind of skill guys we'll see from here on out are the elite of the elite...which means those returners are even more capable of busting it. Arkansas will score a bit on our defense I believe, the young safety play concerns me against a team that attacks vertically like Petrino's offense. So we can't afford to either give ideal field position or free scores when their offense isn't on the field yet.

A lot of how this game turns out depends on the start of the game. If the offense comes out and punches their defense in the mouth and Saban's defense confuses Mallet early...we might be able to create some space which will put the pressure on them and create a snowball effect. If we sputter on offense and/or concede a few big plays on defense, it could become a four-quarter affair. I think Alabama will end up winning this game by two scores but Alabama can lose this game if the secondary struggles and the special teams concedes big plays. This is a team that we definitely need to emphasize the "start fast" part of the "start fast, finish strong" mantra Saban preaches. This is Mallet's first SEC road start, I think if we can create some early three and outs and exploit their seemingly leaky defense...we should be able to play them more safe and keep the deep routes in front of us.
