Will you guys please tell me what you honestly thought of Lance Thompson before he left to come to UT? I know now he is not very popular in Tide country. He had to do something you guys liked in order to be recruiter of the year last year.

What did he do that you guys liked when he was with the Tide?

Not sure anyone has any real valuable input on his value as a position coach. Our OLBs weren't able to get a consistently good pass rush all year long, and this could fall at Thompson's feet. They did pretty well in coverage this year I'd say.

I think ultimately almost all defensive coaches on a Nick Saban staff are merely cogs in the great machine. I say almost because I do believe there are guys (like Kirby Smart) who CNS relies on the opinions of.

I think that Thompson's value as a recruiter for us was substantial. Unfortunately for UT fans, I truly believe that the antics of Thompson and his kid-boss will turn off families from the UT program. I know these things were done in the name of reengergizing a fanbase, but I believe that you reap what you sow, and those remarks were below the belt.

Ultimately, I don't think any assistant coach in America is good enough/valuable enough to do anything to prevent the mortal beatdown Coach Saban is going to have our team ready to administer come October. If you haven't noticed, he's a fiesty one, our coach. He isn't going to forget Thompson mocking our team for losing in that Sugar Bowl.

Any grown man who will build relationships with young athletes, then immediately turn around and mock them when they lose a game is not a classy individual, period. And non-classy individual are a detriment to their programs at all times, period--despite whatever positives they might bring to the table.

:BigA:We recruited well with him and recruited just as well without him so go figure! Comments and his recruiting tactics after he left tells me he was not worth his salt! Without Saban I would have never new his name!:BigA:

He was mostly known for his recruiting rather than his coaching. But as someone has already mentioned and it's already been proven. We've recruited just as well without him as we did with him. Plus we've already done what he said would never happen and that's take one of his recruits. We've done that.

You got a good recruiter but I'm not sure how "great" he is outside of Nick Saban's system.

He's the same position coach he was at LSU and UCF. LBs were a problem at LSU, just look back during his time there and name a good LB at LSU after Bradie James and Trev Faulk left. He can recruit, if given the resources, but can't coach as well as many would like. Obviously the same can be said at Alabama. The OLBs were a problem at times, and often looked lost in pass rush. I think Sal Sunseri is a massive upgrade from a coaching aspect, and we'll see as far as recruiting goes.

He recruited well. He was responsible for Tide recruiting in the Mobile area. He did a pretty good job of it. He'll do well for the Vols as well, I would wager. his practice field performance is tougher to gauge, but I would bet he is more than competent.

He was never recruiter of the year before he came to Alabama, and will never be the recruiter of the year again (IMO). But I think Coach Saban will have another Coach, recruiter of the year in the near future (JMO).

Who is in charge of Memphis

Great recruiter. Mediocre coach. 'Nuff said about him.

Thompson was hired for his ability to recruit not coach. Coach Smart and Burns are the right hand men of Coach Saban. As far as his coaching ability he basically does what he is told and not much more. Recruiting is his strong suit. At BAMA he wasn't allowed to talk to reporters. Now we understand why. In Knoxville he is allowed to say whatever he wants and now is labeled as Kiffin's Parrot or defective mouth piece. Windy Lips II.

I will take Willis anyday over Thompson. I hear he is a great recruiter and for sure he coaches line backers better than Thompson! We had a great team last year because of coach Saban not because of Lance Thompson! If you want to know about great recruiting go back and look at the Lsu classes when Saban was there! He took the top class there also! It follows Nick Saban and where he goes and not Lance Thompson! I really dont know why anyone is in the least worried about it ! I think we can just sit back and look at TN and laugh about how they blowed 11 million! I think that is a high price for what they got! This is what I think:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

What did UT blow 11 million on? If you are talking about the coaching staff. Even with the prices paid to assistants, we are still just the 4th highest paid in the conference.

The staff, while having the reputation of being good recruiters, their coaching ability is very suspect. There is no one to keep them in control. IMHO the staff is a ticking time bomb. Look at the records of the coaches on that staff with previous HCing experience. It is not very good. Too many egos, too much booze, too many women with no authority figure to keep them in check. The way Kiffy-Kins conducted himself with the Raiders gives me reason to believe that these first few mental errors he has made is just the tip of the iceberg.

You said you have been here more lately than on VolNation, well I never knew the site existed joined up read a few posts up there. The most disturbing thing is that most of your fans think these outbursts are great. Kiffy-Kins has managed to turn UT football into a new version of the WWF in one week. How will the players conduct themselves on and off the field when their role models, the coaches, have the attitude they have?

TIP OF THE ICEBERG.

VolFan1,

Here is how I see the UT coaching staff. This is why I see them as overpaid.

Lane Kiffin - Hired as the Raiders HC while he was the Co-OC at USC and he didn't even call the plays at USC. Originally I thought that it was just Al Davis being crazy again, Kiffin seems to be disproving this. USC recruits itself since there are not any consistent powers on the west coast other than USC. My opinion, others will probably disagree.

Oregeron - See above about USC recruiting itself. Is he really a strong D-Line coach or is he a product of the recruiting level he is come accustom with?

Thompson - Most of our players committed to either Alabama or Saban. I will not say that Thompson did a poor job recruiting, but I don't see things changing for us either. He is not well known as a position coach.

Monte Kiffin - Excellent NFL DC. He is still a huge question mark. The cover 2 is on the back side of its popularity in the NFL. Teams have learned how to beat it. Can he relate to college kids?

All of these are valid points. We will see what the staff can do over the couple of seasons. The assistants, yes, the may be overpaid. As far as CLK is concerned...his salary is $2 million. This is on the low end of the scale.

IF UT gets results on the field within the next 2 seasons, then what the assistants and CLK make could be well lower than they deserve. It would be awesome if the Vols could get a Bama like turn around....we shall see. This year will be with an unproven QB. Can CLK and staff do anything with one of the 3 we have (Crompton, Coleman, Stephens)? We will see.

With everything going on, you never hear anything about the offensive coordinator, Chaney. This guy had a good offense at Purdue. He also had Drew Brees.

VolFan I feel like I must say you are a classy person, UT fan or no. I would've already gotten mad and started fighting if I ever posted on a UT board (which I will never do; that's neither here nor there).

Not that I'm gonna ever agree with you on much of anything football related, I just wanted to give credit where it is due--classy posting on your part.
