From Jeremy Fowler's Twitter page (Orlando Sentinel Beat Writer for the Gators):

Just talked to a Florida staff member -- Urban was in hospital at least twice this month for chest pains, nausea and sickness.

I wish the very best to Coach Meyer and his family. Although, it appears his health is of utmost importance to him and his family, I do hope that this is not a life ending health problem. We should all be proud of his accomplishments and what he has done for the young men that have played under him.

I do ask a favor of the TideFans family. Whatever the reason, let's forget the "crap" and "snide remarks" and give respect where respect is due.

Remember, we "ARE ALABAMA".

Thanks for taking the time to read this Hope I haven't offended anyone.

See you in Pasedena on January 7th.

ROLL TIDE!

Wow....stunning news.

Wish he and his family the best.

I pity the next guy in line. We wandered around ten years after CPB retired, till we got CGS. Then we wandered around ten more years when CGS retired until CNS. With the D-coordinator leaving, along with Tebow and all the seniors and some juniors, the next guy will be hard pressed to keep the wolves at bay. Someone such as Stoops may have a few seasons, but if they bring in someone like Whittingham and they lose four or five games his first year, he's gonna be on the hot seat real fast.

Meyer reportedly has long-suffered from an arachnoid cyst (look it up). Now how in the world he translates what is usually a benign, incidental finding on a brain MRI into a reason to give up his head coaching position is beyond me.

If he's really doing this for health reasons, I wonder if there's something more serious going on that he's simply not releasing at this time.

In any case, I hope he gets better and I wish nothing but the best for him and his family.
I knew about the cyst and his need to remain calm, so I watched him on the sidelines and it flared up. After he threw his headset, he started clutching his head. You could tell he was in pain. I guess the heart valve difficulties were the frosting on the cake...

I just hope and pray like the rest that it is nothing serious and he needs just to rest and take care of his health.....that being said, with Tebow leaving and having to rebuild, not reload, it might be easier for someone to come in now and take over the program, to keep the Gators from having several down years, its possible, like you all have said, if Mullen, Whittingham or some other Meyer protege comes in, they may be able to continue the dynasty they were surely building.

I work in the Medical field as an MRI Tech, and while I have seen lots of arachnoid cysts, they usually don't create life threatening problems, but with the all the pressure that these coaches are under, I would not be surprised if it could cause other problems as well.

No matter what, I just hope Urban stays healthy, he has been a great asset to the SEC and we will miss him that is for sure. I feel for our Florida brothers and sisters, we know how hard it is to replace someone that has taken their team to the top, not a good feeling.

Get well soon Coach Meyer, we were hoping for many more Florida/Bama matchups, but as long as you are healthy, we will wait for the next head Gator to tangle with.

Wow! I am a little shocked by this news. Hope everything works out for UM and his family. I am sure the Florida nation is in shock at this moment.

They just said on espn that CM has a heart muscle defect is why he is retiring. So sad!

If true, his coaching career is probably over. He's too intense and involved as a coach, and it would be difficult to not be the way he's always been.
Hate it, he's been very good for the SEC and was a great fit at UF. Wish him and his family well.

I would be willing to bet that Jeremy Foley at least makes an initial run at Bob Stoops. After that, probably Kyle Wittingham at Utah or Dan Mullen at Miss. St.

People are missing an obvious choice, Jon Gruden. Seen a lot in Fl and can be viewed as a Saban type

as a bucs fan, i'll always be grateful to gruden for getting us over the hump to win the SB. that said, i think he's a bit overrated as a coach and his hyper-professional approach and historic penchant for buidling teams from a pool of older, veteran players doesn't necessarily mesh with the college game. plus, he'd have to change some things about the way he acts if he coached in college. he's so foul-mouthed on the sidelines he'd make a sailor blush. i like him, and again, i'm eternally appreciative, but i don't think he fits at the college level.
