AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn coach Gene Chizik said Maryland might have reached out to Tigers offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn about its vacant head coaching job.

"I have not talked to anybody personally, but there are possibilities of contact," Chizik told reporters Tuesday. He said he couldn't offer further details "because I don't have any."

Maryland fired coach Ralph Friedgen last week.

Talk about hurting a 'poor' Recruiting class. Let Gus walk and several guys may have second thoughts.
Rumors of NCAA sanctions down the road, and now 'The Golden Boy' may flee for a less competitive conference. Gus would most likely be an almost instant winner in the ACC.
The Recruits the Barn hopes to sign still have time to bolt.
(As Cecil would put it... 'It makes me smile'. :) )

I'm guessing their big QB recruit out of Arkansas, Frazier, will follow Gus wherever he goes.

Per Al.com, Chizik states "to the best of my knowledge, there are possibilities of contact".

Malzaln was scheduled to talk to the media after practice, but elected not to.

let the auburn nation begin their meltdown!:biggrin::biggrin:
OK, I confess. I have never been a D1 head coach therefore I don't have a working knowledge of the everyday affairs of being one. However, in my opinion, if I was a D1 head coach days away from playing for a national championship I would demand to know what my assistant coaches were doing on a hour by hour basis. Something tells me Chizik doesn't have a clue or Chizik doesn't have a clue.

they said they budgeted 3.5million for the head coach. this is atypical of maryland- they are kinda cheapskates. but the radio guy (105.7fm) this morning said he had sources close to the ad and they were prepared to pay the market rate for an established head coach or great coordinator.
and just reporting right now- some mystery coach is touring the campus right this second. they are tracking down who it is.

Unless I am badly mistaken, $3.5 million would put whoever they hire squarely in the top 10 highest paid coaches in the country. Not really cheapskate territory.

yup, the radio guy (some reporter, didnt catch his name) said historically maryland is pretty cheap, but the brand new AD wants to play with the big boys and is prepared to put in the money to do it now. they also bought out friedjens? last yr of his contract so they definitely are making a financial push.
im wondering who the coach is visiting today. if it is malzaln then that makes at least 2 visits recently.

If Maryland offers and the money is right, I don't see how Gus could turn it down. The Maryland job is a good job, and he would be in a good area for recruiting. It's in the ACC and he could compete for ACC titles there. He would be crazy to turn it down.
