Link: Mark Gottfried Hired as NC State Mens Basketball Coach

CMG had some deficiencies as a game day coach, but he did get some talent to the Capstone. He did get us to the tourney multiple times.

The wheels fell off when he got into his 'extra curriculars', and I'm a bit surprised by the hire. But I certainly wish him all the best. I always thought he was a decent enough man who mad some really bad decisions off the court.

Uh no he wasn't. He was the worst in game coach I have ever seen at a major college. His players never developed from year to year. He had some very very bad personality issues. While I wish him no ill I certainly can't say that I'll be rooting for him either. Hope the Wolfpack doesn't mind losing by 40 on the road.

not sure if you are serious or if you hold a personal grudge. being a horrible game coach doesnt mean you dont know the game. He knows the game well. he just wasnt good at putting what he knew into a game plan on game day. dont forgot that season we made the NCAA run. it wasnt all on coach but it wasnt luck either.

I was a bit disappointed with his ability to "teach" the game and develop the talent that he recruited.

If you look at the talent over the years, the players that have done the best in the NBA are players that were one and done instead of staying for 4 years under CMG.

This. Most of the talent he brought in only improved slightly during their time at UA. Also, his inability to either A) recruit players who fit into his high post offense or B) run an offense that fit his personnel absolutely killed him. Gottfried can recruit, but I never saw anything on that court that made me think he was a great basketball mind.
 
Hope Mark's brings life back to Raleigh. But as LD says, his players rarely improved and there were many nights when they barely competed on the road. I'd sure like to know about his falling out with Gerald Wallace. The fact that Gerald remains one of the greatest teammates in pro basketball, the consumate anti-prima donna -- makes me want to side with him.

"Stubbornness" is a teacher's and coach's worst enemy!

Couldn't that be said about most coaches...especially now? The "NBA caliber" player rarely stays in college for 4 years.

Without a doubt, our road performances were poor for most of Gottfried's tenure.

I believe much of the falling out with Gerald Wallace centered on Gerald's desire to play the 3 instead of the 4. CMG recognized that we had a true 3 for his system (Rod Grizzard) and Gerald could NOT hit a jump shot. He placed Gerald at the 4 to take advantage of his extreme athleticism which led to strong rebounding. You have to remember that Gerald did not want to attend college, but he followed his mother's advice and attended for a year before turning pro. I would suspect that Gerald was not happy that he spent a year not being the center of an offensive scheme in college instead of showing off his dunking skills in the NBA.

This is not an indictment of Gerald. This is the story that I heard at the time, and it hasn't changed over the years. Gerald has improved his skills throughout his NBA career.

Out of the11 years he was here we had 2 seasons where we were 8-8, 3 where we had winning records and everything else was a losing season. One year we made the dance with a 7-9 SEC record and the next at 8-8. Had the selection commitee been giving at-large bids to the mid majors back then those two years would have been NIT trips as well.
 
I just can't stop picturing the 3pt D of a CMG coached team against the shooters that UNC and Duke will bring to the table.

Early on, we were pretty good on defense. But, after the death of Rah Rah Scott and then TR Dunn (replaced Scott on the staff) going back to the NBA, we were never "good" on defense again. I always thought that our best coaches were Scott and Dunn but I would guess neither wanted a head coaching gig in college. Scott maybe, but I don't think Dunn did. The year he was in Ttown, TR was praised for his coaching and most fans would have loved having him as the HC IMHO.

Wallace barely held on in the NBA his first couple of years. He is definitely a different player and maybe a different person than he was during his first year at Alabama.

He's basically the same player . . . except he can actually shoot a jump shot from time to time, which he developed after finally getting a chance to play in Charlotte. Gerald busted his hump at Alabama. True, he wanted to play the 3. But he played hard and did everything the coaches wanted. Rod loafed, ignored any semblance of an offense that didn't put the ball in his hand and couldn't/wouldn't guard his shoe laces.

Something in that year made it personal for Wallace. He doesn't even mention Alabama, listing Childersburg High as his alma mater in his program bio. His animus seems way beyond a disagreement with the coaches on where he should be playing. (Ironically, injuries and a thin bench regularly put him at power forward for the Bobcats.)
 
I agree with all of that. Losing those two did make a huge difference.

First & foremost, I have to say congrats to Coach Gottfried. He's one of our own. I hope he does well at NC State. He won't have the luxury of having Mr. Basketball from the state coming in each year seeing as how Carolina & Duke get the pick of the litter. He'll be battling for sloppy 4ths with Wake Forest (a lot like Texas Tech and Okie St get what's left over after Texas and Oklahoma get done scavenging).

But the entire point of me posting (and yes..I know it's petty) is to post this quote from an NC State player who had this to say.

"I mean, as much as people want to say you commit to a school, you really commit to the coaches," sophomore Scott Wood said. "It's definitely difficult, but at the same time Debbie Yow says that's what's best for the organization and we're going to move forward."

Yep..that was for the football enthusiasts who mosey over here from time to time who believe in their heart of hearts that the average 18 year old really loves a school as much as we fans do. I just wanted to point out, once again, straight from the horse's mouth, that in most cases, the kids DO commit to the coaches. Alabama was still Alabama when Coach Shula was here. But now that Coach Saban's here........ well....I'm just sayin....
