PG - Trevor Releford/Ben Eblen
SG - Trevor Lacey/Andrew Steele/Rodney Cooper
SF - Tony Mitchell/Charles Hankerson Jr.
PF - Jamychal Green/Nick Jacobs
C - Moussa Gueye/Carl Engstrom

There are just so many combinations that can be had with these players, all of which look like a top 15 team to me. :BigA:

Few questions that will be answered:
Will Jamychal stay at center or go to PF to get more prepared for his professional position?

Will Lacey have a better overall freshman year than Releford did?

Will Big Carl ride the pine or improve immensely?

Will Andrew Steele stay healthy and log a lot of valuable minutes?
 
And Levi Randolph too who would have been a solid top recruit even if we had missed on Lacey.

I think a lot depends on how ready Gueye is. He's a four star but does he arrive in good shape, etc. And how much improvement Engstrom makes.

So we could go really big with Gueye/Engstrom, Jamychal, Tony, shooting guard, Releford.

Or if Gueye doesn't adapt quickly/Engstrom doesn't improve a lot then we could go a bit smaller with Jamychal at the 5 and Tony at the 4. We have a lot of 2's and 3's now. So we could go small (its not like it would be that small, we spent a lot of time with Tony at the 4 this past year) and run and press. A lot of options, I think a lot of it depends on Gueye and Engstrom.
 
I think Nick Jacobs will play more that Carl Engstrom next year. This class will provide us with a lot of much needed depth. In a perfect world Jacobs and Gueye will give us good minutes so that Green can play more PF than C. We do have a lot of options on the wing. Mitchell has his spot. It'll be interesting to see what shakes out with Steele, Hankerson, Cooper, Lacey, and Randolph. I wonder if Randolph or Lacey can slid over to point in relief of Releford?

at this point, i've got to believe that backup PG is the biggest weakness yet to be proven as being addressed. defensively, eblen did a good job. offensively, there was something missing and teams seemed to take advantage when releford came out. i truly hope he's made some strides in the off-season and is ready to step his game up. if not, or if they're simply talented enough to step in, i hope some of the signees can provide some minutes.

Ben isn't bad. He just isn't Trevor. Releford is one of the best young PGs in the nation, so when he gets a rest, Ben "disappoints" because he doesn't make the plays Trevor makes.

I think Eblen gave us good minutes this past season and is a terrific back up PG. He plays tough defense and doesn't turn the ball over. His lack of offense shouldn't be an issue b/c in theory Mitchell and Hankerson will be improved and Cooper, Randolph and Lacey should be an upgrade in outside shooting over Davis and Hillman. With that being said, it would be great if Lacey or Randolph could slide over to the point to give Releford a rest. However, I don't think Eblen lack of offense will be as much of a liability next season.

i didn't say anything negative against eblen, just an opinion on the offensive side of his game. you have to admit that his offensive numbers aren't staggering. yes, i know releford is a special player and any type of comparison is tough... which i did not do. he just needs a break during games. last year, he either played too many minutes (physically) or got into foul trouble because there was no relief to let him sit for a bit. i simply would like for there to be someone to be able to manage the game while he's getting a rest, whether it be eblen or a signee.

i truly hope there would not be a liability, which was the core of my original post. i was not trying to call him out, but as there was no other backup PG, he was referenced. i really do hope he's gotten either some more confidence in his shot or others will be trusted with the position a bit more. there, simply, was no other option when releford went to the bench last year. i'm no way trying to jump on a player, but as he was the only one that provided the relief last year, i referenced eblen. we need options when releford gets a rest.

This. Eblen was not much of a threat to score at all last season. I would love to see Randolph or Lacey be able to log some minutes at PG. Perhaps Eblen will improve offensively by next season.

i think it'll look more like this......

PG - Trevor Releford/Levi Randolph/Ben Eblen
SG - Trevor Lacey/Andrew Steele/Rodney Cooper
SF - Tony Mitchell/Levi Randolph/Charles Hankerson Jr./Rodney Cooper
PF - Jamychal Green/Nick Jacobs
C - Moussa Gueye/Carl Engstrom

Levi will play multiple roles as well as Cooper....Levi is like trevor, too good to keep off the court and with his versatility to play both guard spots and the SF, he will be on the floor before hankerson and eblen. Look for eblen's time to decrease this year.
 
I think we can all agree that this is the most talented bunch we've had in a while. Once CAG gets them playing like a team, who knows what our ceiling is?

I didn't take it that way at all. I still hope that some how we can squeeze in a PG in the 2012 class, but it doesn't look like we have offered any. I agree with what you said. I'm just hoping we've added enough pieces so that Ben's lack of offense won't be as obvious next year.

I'm just happy to see the excitement back for basketball. Good time are def ahead of us.
 
I think Coach Grant likes Eblen's defense. And if he improves like he did over last offseason then he should be a serviceable backup point guard.

The thing is, will these new guys play defense? Even if they buy into playing defense, will they play good fundamental defense? I think we'll have more weapons overall which might actually help Eblen. He won't need to be a scorer at all, and can just do a simple job of distributing the ball and then playing extremely hard defense while he's in there.

I still expect him to be the backup point guard next year and play about the same amount of minutes.
 
I would not be surprised to see Lacey slide over to the point at times when we go big on offense. One of his strengths is how strong he is and having the ball in his hands when the clock is running out will allow him to drive and score or be fouled. He is also a very good passer which will allow him to dump the ball off if necessary.

I've compared this part of his game to Michael Jordan. If you ever actually watched Jordan later in his career (not Sports Center hightlights) he actually got about half of his points from the free throw line.
 
Lacey is a pure shooting guard in the sense that he can spot up off a pass but you can also just give it to him late in the clock and let him make something happen.

Perfect complement to Releford. T-Relly early in the possession...especially in transition. T-Lacey late when we just need a good look. This team could be great as Lacey and the new bigs develop. The best thing is with three established starters, new guys just need to find roles. By the tape I've seen, Lacey is the type of guard we lacked last year. If he can just learn the defense and shoot for percentage, the sky is the limit.

With the signing of Retin Ojomoh me may have that other option for 2012.
