Recruiting Update 1/20

Very little excitement is good news if you ask me

Last year, several people had a meltdown because we got little excitement on signing day as we had pretty much filled our class early. *U got a few commits on signing day and you would have thought that they had kicked our butts in recruiting cause so little noise was made by our signees on signing day.

while I agree with you, the latest on Rivals (Bama) list him as a long shot to roll with the Tide. Young has his Top 4 (auburn, florida, UGA, miami) with au and UGA as the 2 teams to beat.
Could it be that Bama has a "long shot" because the staff cooled on him?

While we want all the big name recruits, we must remember (not calling/pointing you out San Jose) that we can only get 25 players that the staff feels best suited. This is where the Auburn's and Georgia's (and because of the trickle down effect, the Mississippi schools to an extent) will benefit because all of the top talent in the Southeast that wants to play at Bama can't because of the numbers will go elsewhere. It's frustrating to see great talent go elsewhere, especially our rivals, but this is a good problem to have. We should enjoy it while we can.

As long as Hill is okay academically, we don't have a spot for Young.

Five stars or not, Young is going to need some time to fill out his frame in the S&C program. The staff looks at Hill as being more physically ready to contribute early, and he has gotten the spot unless he throws it away in the classroom.

Love Drake's tweet! I think if we get Winston, it's going to be in large part because of this year's signees - heard they are all hounding him to come to Bama! Realistically, though, I think it would have a more emotional effect, solidify this class as #1, etc. than an actual effect on the field - I think there's a good shot he'll be playing pro baseball.

I understand what you are saying but it will take Hill just as much time to get in shape as it will Young to gain weight.

Yes, they are probably hounding him..and he likes that. Did you read Josh Harvey-Clemons quotes about his visit to FSU and JW? He said "Jameis Winston probably recruited me harder than the FSU coaches. It seemed like Jameis was at home and very relaxed." What if the highly recruited Clemons kid does sign on Wednesday with FSU and JW switches and signs with Bama AFTER signing date, how SHOULD Clemons view JW? If you are contemplating switching, JW would probably have not been heavily recruiting. As for baseball, he'll sign and play professional, along with FSU football.

Does anyone know why the SEC doesn't allow professional baseball players to also play football but the ACC does?

Don't most minor league contracts prohibit the playing of college football anyway?

I thought that was why players like Chris Winke, Kelley Washington and the Oklahoma State QB didn't start playing football until they gave up baseball.

Winston is just playing the game with his recruiting...
loving the attention.

he has no intentions of signing at UA, or any other school that doesnt allow him to play minor league baseball and get paid.

He may love Bama, being a Bama boy...but being able to attend college, play college football, and get paid a high six figure signing bonus to play minor league baseball...well, i think thats enough said.

Those guys, especially Winke and Weeden, went straight to pro baseball, never attending school. There college eligibility clock never started. After they realized that they were not going to make it in baseball, they decided to give football a try in college. The dual sport guys, like Russell Wilson, Jake Locker, Drew Henson, and others did both at the same time. That's what Winston wants to do...GET PAID and do both. Can't blame him, but quit the circus and be honest.

In most instances that's simply not the case. It's typically harder and takes longer for players to put on "good weight" than it does for players to drop "bad weight." As for Hill, I've seen nothing to suggest that he's carrying a lot of "bad weight", so he would almost certainly see the field before Young would IMHO.

Recruiting Update 1/27

Looks like a good place for a "catch all" . .

Does C Gulledge appear to be targeted for the offensive side as opposed to defense?

Is D Tomlinson headed to T-town?

D Lake projected as a nose tackle or one of the hybrid tackle/ends spots?

Gullege- OL
Tomlinson- IMO, our last spot goes to him.
Lake- have heard both spots mentioned

Re: Recruiting Update 1/27

I read an article that said Gulledge would start out as a DL but the numbers do not support that. By my count, we have 8 returning DE and 3 returning NT with 2 DE commits and 2 NT commits. That puts us at 15 DL which is the max I think we can devote to that position segment. I also have us with 15 OL spots with 12 returning and three commits (including CG).
Big Lake is a NT (imo)
D Tomlinson fits the type we are looking for at DE and seems to be our top priority. He is a need because I suspect attrition at DE. Love his upside and lack of baggage.
If Gladney or Hill do not sign due to grades that opens up 1-2 spots on signing day. If both do not sign and we only sign 1 more JTaylor comes in Aug. I think Gladney is a forgone conclusion that he will not sign but I haven't heard about Hill's ACT. If Hill does not sign some think we get A Young. So basically we have one spot to give and I think it will be DTom. If we miss on all remaining and Gladney goes Prep/Juco, we bring JT in and call it a day with 26.

I'd assume Gulledge is being considered for an interior OL spot then? He seemed like he'd fit that Gentry role well (he or Dakota Ball). A bit undersized for every down DT, but a good pass rusher in a 4 down/ rabbit set.

Caleb is not big enough to play like Gentry. He's slim. He would have to gain some weight to play inside.
