Do you think Penn St. should name the stadium after Paterno?

I agree with you. Ignoring him will not make his accomplishments go away.

But maybe they should purge his name from all the record books. If you do not want his name associated with your stadium then why would you want his name associated with your university?

Suppose something like this surfaces about Coach Bryant. Do we tear down his statues and just call it Denny-Denny Stadium?
It didn't. Straw man...

Willie52..... you are dead on.

AW... come on people.... now days one mistake is an OOPS.... but if a CHILDS life is affected is it JUST AN OOPS?????????
BS..... a childs life is SACRED.......Coach Paterno is standing before GOD and answering for his mistakes.
Would you want to stand before God and say "but it was just one LITTLE incident....... the school was more important..."
READ your Bible and see what it says about END TIMES........... it will scare the devil out of you.
IF coach paterno turned his back on ONE CHILD then he is NOT what I thought he was. He was just another tool..........
SURE name a stadium after him.......... that is ALL he will ever have.

PATHETIC!!!!!!!!

I agree - there should be no reference to Joe Pa on the stadium. This was not just a mistake someone made - this showed his character - or lack thereof. He knew something had happened - and did not do anything to protect the children.

I don't think they should because we will never know how much Paterno knew or if he was involved in any way. He's dead let him stay that way. RTR

In an age where we kick kids out of band and cancel their scholarships for chanting "where's your green card", I don't think we should be naming anything after someone who condones, directly or indirectly, the raping of children. His name and so-called accomplishments should forever be removed from college sports history.

Paterno was no idiot. He knew that pedophiles don't stop until they're made to and yet he allowed Sandusky free access to PS facilities. So the answer is NO...You cannot sweep this mess under the rug.

Don't they already have buildings, streets, statues, etc. with his name on them? If so, that is enough. He has already been honored for the good things that he did for the university. No need to posthumously honor a man who went out under the scandal and shame that he did. IMO, he gave up the privilege of having his name on the stadium when he chose to look the other way to protect his friend and his legacy at the expense of at-risk children.

I think it's pathetic that Nitters can't wait a year for the Sandusky case to get resolved before worrying about getting Paterno's name on a stadium. If the case shows without doubt that Joe Pa was complicit in a cover up that would have saved dozens of teens and pre-teens from getting raped his name belongs only a police blotter, not on a stadium in my state.

Penn State needs to deemphasize Paterno and focus on the university. They have a great school and athletic program that is so much more than one man. I'm sure Paterno had a tremendous positive impact on a lot of people through his time and donations, but there will not be enough time that passes for people alive today to forget what he didn't do. He controlled and ran that place. If he had demanded ANYTHING, it would have happened. Hopefully, people will learn a lesson from his failure and the destruction of his legacy. I hope people NEVER forget.

No way I would, they fired the man, time to look forward.

This is a very good comment. Even though I said yes to a years down the road name change, how many stadiums are named after coaches that were outright fired? Most legendary coaches who want to hang on too long finally step down before being fired at the end.

Penn State, over reactionary or not, partially cleansed themselves of the scandal and media pressure by firing Paterno, but they also cleansed themselves of their history too. I believe in the long run when this dies down and people start remembering the good times, they are going to regret firing him. I believe they will wish that they handled it differently. Having him step down at season's end, and not coaching the rest of the season due to sickness from what had happened or his cancer for goodness sakes.

They somewhat permanently divorced Paterno with the firing.

There's no way to quantify the human damage which occurred after his decision to do nothing and kick the matter upstairs without followup. The horror cannot be balanced by past good. Just ask the catholic church about their similar abuse problems. Others are free to disagree, but my belief is that he has probably eclipsed all of the good in the past. I'm still thinking it over. I believe the whole US is still thinking it over and trying to understand...

I agree, Earle.

I keep thinking about two things. The first is, "How many more are out there, keeping quiet?"

Pedophiles don't just stop. By the same token, they don't just suddenly start that behavior in old age. Sandusky is in his 60s. My guess is that this has been going on for 40+ years, maybe 50. And there are dozens of victims, maybe into three digits. Most have gone on to productive lives; some have had trouble. But I guarantee you that every single one of them thinks about what happened to them at least once a day, every day. They'll all carry some of that nastiness with them to the day they die.

Second, and more important to the Paterno question: How many victims were there between when Paterno knew and when Sandusky was arrested? We know of a few. I promise you, there are more out there keeping quiet.

Every one of them, whether public or still quiet and unknown, could have been prevented by a single phone call from Joe Paterno to the police. That's a lot to explain away with past good deeds.

Wow, I would just like to say that I love when people talk about the Bible...TRUELY, I do!!! I start the day with my daily bread and can't get enough!!! But I also know that we are not the judge nor should we throw stones in a glass house. I say that I have little to no knowledge of his actions in this situation because I don't know him personally and wasn't there......so I will worry about the plank in my eye......but let me say also that to God, SIN is SIN.....regardless of what it is.....he hates all SIN.....we ALL will be judged one day using Jesus' example....unless you was there be very careful on what you believe because the Media is an Evil tool.....Let God be God.....Trust in him to judge accordingly. I am not condoning this situation WHATSOEVER but at the same time, I realize that the battle is not against Flesh and Blood and that God promises to punish those STERNLY who make little ones sin.....I just pray that God's will be done and that I know my understanding may not be his, so I will trust him!......just my thoughts, please don't take offense, sometimes, we christains can be very judgemental when we shouldn't be:)
