New coach search...

Never heard a coach basically say "I'm thinking about it".

Yeah -- I'll take some crazy after years of indifference (at least appearance wise)

At first, I was taken aback that Marshall even addressed a question about us, but it sort of makes sense given how quickly these deals are made along with the fact that most of the negotiations by agent would likely take place while his team is still playing provided they make a Final Four run (which I'm still hoping they don't). Depending on how well we're hiding our hand, there may actually some dubious feeling that Marshall isn't calling his own shot with us, whether true or not. I see it as a bold statement to WSU that he will seriously contemplate this and is publically giving them as much time as possible to put together an equivalent offer. The more time passes, the more credence I'm giving our position (money AS IT RELATES to long term tv, exposure, recruiting) over money in the Kochs' safe.

The more I think about this the more I suppose I should just not worry about it. It's going to work out one way or another, and we will field a team next year. I applaud CBB for thinking big and going for it (if that's actually what's happening), but there are no guarantees. Anthony Grant was the Gregg Marshall of six years ago. Frank Martin was a coaching stud in Manhattan.

At this point I just don't want us coming out of this looking foolish, and I am afraid it's a little late for that.

If we were to pay 3.75 which is the number I heard on the radio, we would immediately be in the top 6 in coaches salaries. He'd be one notch higher than Izzo.

If true, I applaud our AD for going big. I also hope they will set a huge budget for assistant coaches and support staff. Get the guy hired and then get out of his way and let him do his job.

'Sip, when you first came to Tidefans I remember you being a "sunshine pumper." Where's the old 'Sip???

He's at the N.I.T. :) Blue Font

What was it like, during the Grant era, being an N.I.T season ticket holder? Were there 4-for-1 ticket promotions to try and fill seats? Stuff like that?

Your cynicism over who 'Bama might or might not pull insofar as a coaching hire alas has me going all the way back to a boyhood conversation I had with, yup, Adolph Rupp the second year of Throckmorton's (C.M. Newton's) tenure - if I recall correctly, it was about sleeping giants and somebody from Transylvania (Throckmorton) awakening one of them. All I remember with any specificity was the Baron's horrid brown suit - but nobody judged him by his fashion statement, just his wins and losses. You know, the way it was with Grant...and with whomever the new coach may be.

I was never offered an incentive to attend a basketball game while CAG was here. During latter stages of the CMG tenure, however, for buying basketball tix we were also given baseball tix, food vouchers, all kinds of extras.

There's really no comparison between Marshall and Grant, Martin is a bit closer but still different destination. Marshall has accomplished far far more than Grant had. Also the "look" of his teams is far different. My only concern is whether he can get a little more talented players to play the same. His teams are the toughest mentally and physically as I can remember in any sport. I said somewhere else that they reminded me of Bryant's and Saban's early teams as far as toughness and discipline.

You would hope so. Say if we hire Marshall he seems like the type to want to bring his assistants with him and I'm sure he would want raises for them as well.

Too bad this is all over the media right now and I really hate it for the kids at Wichita St. It was no fun at all for us when the Saban to Texas rumors were flying, can you imagine what it would be like when the coach actually says he will listen?

Marshall is just trying to get a BIG $$raise$$ from WSU. He is not coming here. Time to go back and look at the lower tier guys.
Miller? Smart? etc....

Seth Greenberg just said on Finebaum that he doesn't think WSU can go much higher than it already has as far as salary if it comes to a bidding war.

to me all his statement does,is verify one thing. There is a deal that he will accept. Maybe that is just $$ or maybe there or other sticking points. Whether that number is even in the realm of realistic or not, we don't know.

Generally coaches would not comment on it, if that was the case. Because he still has to go coach those kids and talk to recruits.

I hear yall on the WSU kids, but I feel like Marshall and his agent have put it out there just as much or more than Bama has! Part of the biz....

The basketball program profited $500,000 last year which sounds nice. But if they add $1.5 million to the head coach's salary (plus raises for assistants) they would lose money. Having big donors is nice, but even with huge donors, an athletic program cannot operate expecting to be $1 million in the hole every year. The cap on how much revenue Wichita State can generate would limit the amount they can pay him. We can pony up $3 million because we could get that money back in revenue. They couldn't.
They'll pony up what they can but they can't match Alabama. I imagine, though, that money will not be the deciding factor. Money will get him to listen to us but it's the other stuff that will entice him to leave Wichita.

Yeah, some of you guys are right. We shouldn't try to go after a home run hire. We have no shot. Just a waste of time. We should just try to maintain and continue to be mired in the mediocrity. Not trying should accomplish that, right? Yeah, let's go with that. The lower-tier guys. Riiiiight...

Blah-dee-frickin'-blah...

If they could go higher, they already would have. If the Koch brothers were going to open up their wallets to keep Marshall they would have already have done so. I don't think WSU has any chance of keeping Marshall. He may not come to Bama but he is going somewhere.

P.S. I think it will be Bama.
