If the Cincinnati Bengals 'wake up,' could AJ McCarron be their quarterback in 2016?

Bengals play calling got ultra conservative once they got the 14-0 lead. I think they ran on 1st down just about every play in the second half. Way to predictable. No excuse for the fumble by AJ though. Can't lose focus in that situation. Overall AJ played a really good game considering only his 2nd start and this was a road game vs the #1 defense in the NFL..

that missed FG in the first half was huge. Actually they threw it on fist down once for an 8 yard gain. they then ran it up the middle for no gain and then ran a sweep with the receiver for a loss.

Feel bad for AJ that it ended that way.

I reckon Dalton sleeps a little easier tonight though.

Guys.... I wouldn't just put it on AJ. The play calling in second half were terrible. They played not to lose. The coaches put AJ in bad situation in 4th quarter. The game should've been over by 3rd quarter. Bengal Defense didn't even help at all.

Bengals got ultra conservative in the second half. Played not to lose, same thing they did last week. I think if they would have been a little more aggressive, it wouldn't have come down to OT. Not making excuses for AJ though. Can't make a mistake like that in that situation. Hate it for him. It will overshadow what was a really good night for him.

Really hope AJ can continue to play well and garner some interest from other teams. Dalton had a fantastic year, and I think they're pretty committed to him long term.

That's the NFL for you, and it's pretty much why I hate it. I turned it off early in the second half because I figured it would end up this way. I was surprised this morning when I saw that it actually went to OT, and I hate it for AJ that it came down to that botched play at the end.

No, IMO, he is not a starting NFL QB.
Have you seen some of the guys starting in the league? AJ did fairly well last night against the top defense in the league. Frankly Andre Smith was the weak link on the line. Von Miller abused him last night. AJ has the ability, he just needs the opportunity. Dalton is no fan favorite in Cincy either so don't be surprised if he loses in the playoffs again that the Bengals look in another direction.

BTW, If AJ Green doesn't loaf on the long pass in the end zone he scores easily and the Bengals win. Green is a good receiver, but do you think Julio would have let up on the play.

Great point here. For all the praise that is lavished on Green, he seems to take quite a few plays off every game.

None of us know what the called play was, but I would bet that Green was SUPPOSED to wind up in the spot that McCarron threw it to. Green probably wasn't the first option on the play so he figured the ball wasn't coming his way and ultimately it cost his team the victory. Prime example of why coaches preach to give your best effort on EVERY play, even if you don't think you're getting the ball...

Please elaborate. While it might be a little too early to declare AJ the next Tom Brady, I think he played as well as he could of last night, obviously outside of the final play of the game. He made every throw, had smart reads, got rid of the ball, even scrambled when he had to. From everything I saw, and what I would think most people watching the game saw, he made the most of his opportunity. You have an interesting opinion.

would love to see what he could do with the Dolphins. i think he could replace Tannehill. he could probably start for the Browns as well. But that wouldnt be a wise choice. I think right now anywhere else he's going to be a backup

This. That was a GREAT throw by AJ that should have been a TD.

AJ is responsible for the fumble at the end, but the game never should have come down to that. Besides the would-be TD mentioned here, the play-calling got way too conservative as others mentioned. Up 14-0, you go for the jugular. You had exactly what you wanted - young QB playing with the lead and some confidence, running game working fairly well - that's the time to step on their necks. Just more evidence as to why I've never been overly impressed with Marvin Lewis in general.

Have to take the good with the bad. AJ played great last night and it was fun watching. AJ fumbled the ball on the final attempt to win. That was bad but he will have more opportunities. Let's see how it goes.

As someone who has been critical of AJ, I think he's played pretty well. I wouldn't push him ahead of Dalton, but he has raised his value a bit over these 3 games.

Of course it does help to play for the team that was voted to have "the most talent" on it before the season. That aside, he's looked good.

AJ sliced apart 'the best defense in the NFL' for an entire first half of play. It was an impressive performance for a guy in his 2nd career start. He definitely has the chops to make it in the league, which is saying something. It's just too bad they didn't finish the deal last night.

Seriously, if Ryan Tannehill can be an NFL QB, I don't see why AJ couldn't. He's got the tools. He just needs to develop more and get experience. I think he can be a fine QB in the league.

I'm not sure what AJ could have done last night to impress the doubters other than lead a last minute drive to win the game. Granted, the Bengals lost, but they didn't lose to chopped liver either.

Under the circumstances (hostile stadium and great defense) and conditions (15 degrees) I thought he played as well as any of us could have imagined in just his second start.

I think he's got a future in the league...to what extent we'll see...but if nothing else he's showing he could be a great backup.

He has an opinion, although I can't see what's interesting about it, your's was more insightful!
He gave nothing other than his opinion!
I also have an opinion, I will say given time, by that I mean REP'S in practice, yeah he could.
Now the all-important 'QUALIFIER', the Bengal's, will stay with the red-headed boy until his contract runs out.....
