If the Cincinnati Bengals 'wake up,' could AJ McCarron be their quarterback in 2016?

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

It really depends. Not many, if any, teams in the NFL really have a backup that they are saving just for injuries. Dalton is pretty firmly in as the starter despite AJ's 5 games last year. So I really think the Bengals would probably play around with the Vikings situation and see what they can get out of it because sooner or later they are going to have to make a decision on AJ's future and what they can make out of it. While his name is hot right now is probably the best time. But it's the Bengals, so who knows.

If I was to guess they are going to pass on the Vikings trade and really amp up trade possibilities either that the end of this year or the start of next year.

True. I think after this season they don't owe Dalton that much more guaranteed money though. IF Dalton were to really struggle this year and/or Marvin Lewis gets fired I could see the Bengals management making a decision to go with McCarron over Dalton. It would save them a ton of cap space and they would be getting the same or better production..

Even under those circumstances I'm still not totally seeing the Bengals naming AJ the starter. It would have to take a failure of epic proportions for them to abandon Dalton at this point. He was having a pretty darn good season last year before he went down.I think that NFL organizations become very loyal in the players that get that franchise tag. Look no further than Jay Cutler. Also I think that playoff game proved Marvin Lewis is the biggest reason they have lost 7 of them in a row. How he coached that game was so mind boggling. Had Ben Roethlisberger not went down when he did, I doubt Marvin gets the courage to start airing out on one of the worst secondaries in the NFL. The Bengals are the Bengals and that isn't a good thing .

Well, the franchise tag is merely used as a contract mechanism to keep a player on roster for an additional year at a fixed rate. It doesn't really represent anything significant about the player other than the team won't commit to giving the player a guaranteed long term deal. I don't remember Dalton receiving the franchise tag but if he did he's not under it now. Either way it's a long shot for AJ to be named the starter under the current circumstances but things change fast in the NFL. If the Bengals don't make a deep playoff run this year I think there will be a shakeup of the roster and coaches. The Bengals have had one of the best rosters the last several years and have nothing to show for it. One of the reasons the Bengals haven't had playoff success is the lack of production by Dalton in the postseason. Last year in the playoffs AJ played better vs the Steelers than Dalton has played in any of his post season outings. I think that alone puts a lot of pressure on Dalton this year because of his cap number and lack of production when it matters..

Should the Bengals decide to demand too much for AJ, it will give him leverage come contract negotiation time. I'm not sure the length of his current deal but it can't be too far away.

2016- 600k with signing bonus of 45,413

He will be UFA in 2018.

I think with this year and next year, I think Bengals will try and trade him after the season because there is no way they will keep two high paid QBs on the roster. Someone has to go, and I think this is where Dalton's performance this year will come in handy. He struggles and AJ takes over and does well, then it's a wrap. They will go with him going forward.
What if Dalton does well? Then they would be inclined to trade AJ while they still can, because they know the market is high right now for him, and they need to do that now. What if AJ has a bad year this year? His market goes down a lot. Next year, DeShaun Watson will be in top 5 picks and there will be lot of QB shuffle throughout the league. AJ best chance is to get traded this year or next year and if there is any time for him to start, now is the time to do so. IN two years or 3... people will change their mind about him.

Bengal needs to lower their asking price, and understand that they can afford to let him go and take a chance with someone. Now, here's another kicker: What if he was traded next year to a team, but when it's time to check out free agency, He may not want to come back to that team. He could sign with Browns, Dolphins, Vikings, etc.

My point: I don’t think the rumors are true, but I expect him to be traded sometime later in season or in the off season.

As a Vikings fan, I should jump in on this.

First off, I feel very horrible for Teddy Bridgewater and his family. I also feel horrible for all those who've put in a ton of time working towards this season. I really hope Teddy can get back to 100%, because he seems like an amazing guy.

That being said, if the Vikings could work out a package involving AJ I would be thrilled. The Vikings are predicated on two big things, defense and running the ball.

The offensive line is much improved, there are more weapons at wideout, and teams are forced to stay honest thanks to AD. Someone with AJ's arm talent, and football IQ, would fit in pretty well.

Yeah, I hate it for the guy, the fans and the organization. Think everybody predicted he was primed for a big year and the Vikings would be secure at the position for years to come.

You originally from there, Matt? Friend of mine just moved up to Burnsville.

I'm not.

I adopted the Vikings as my favorite team as a teenager, and I've stuck with them ever since. Having no team FROM here, and never really liking the Falcons, Saints, or Dolphins (there were no Titans then) I ended up choosing a team not close to home.

I'm also a Spurs and a Red Sox fan.

I'm sure they have retired the number, But
he would look good in the number 10 again....

The "Bungals" have top half of the league quarterback as their starter. AJ is not as experienced but has many in the league believing he is better than some of the league starters. AJ's value is higher than where it was when they drafted him, so they get a return on their investment if they trade him, or one of the best backup's in the league if they keep him. Decision.

Like most people in Minnesota, I'm a Packers fan

But like everyone else, I hope Bridgewater makes a full recovery. I don't know of anyone who has anything bad to say about the guy. Well-liked by everyone. A very classy player.

Too much of a gamble. Sam Bradford is too fragile to give up that much for. That could very easily have their first round pick from last year and their first round pick for next year tied up into injured quarterbacks.

Sam Bradford has been overvalued his entire career lol. And now a team trades a first rounder for him? Crazy..
