Today's Comey ordeal was a huge political miscalculation by the GOP. Their questioning ultimately devolved to the point of attacking the FBI director's integrity, which is unwise on numerous fronts. And in doing so, they gave him the opportunity to knock down several talking points that could have been used against Hillary through the Spring. There are still lingering questions here, but charges are not going to be filed, and today's theatrics were a net gain for Clinton rather than a net loss.

1) He killed the "gross negligence" argument:

"When I look at the history of the prosecutions and see there’s been one case brought on the gross negligence theory," Comey continued, "I know there’s no way the Department of Justice is bringing a case against John Doe or Hillary Clinton for the second time in 100 years based on those facts [in this case]."

2) He killed the Petraeus argument:

Comey argued the Petraeus case is actually a "perfect illustration" of which kinds of cases should be prosecuted.

"In that case, you had vast quantities of highly classified information" that was "shared with someone without authority to have it," Comey said. "And then he lied to us about it during the investigation."

Not only that, but Petraeus was actually tape-recorded telling Broadwell that some of the information he was giving her was "highly classified," with "code word stuff" — meaning his intent was quite easy to prove.

So, Comey continued, "you have obstruction of justice, intentional misconduct, and vast quantity of information," and Petraeus "admitted he knew that was the wrong thing to do." All of this, Comey said, "illustrates importantly the distinction" to Clinton’s case, in which there wasn’t sufficient evidence to support any of these.

3) He made a large hole in the "she lied about sending classified documents" argument:

Comey has now said that three emails among the tens of thousands Clinton either sent or received in fact did bear "markings indicating the presence of classified information."...

[However] the three marked emails in question didn’t have the traditional headers at the top of the document saying they were classified. Instead, Comey said, each had the letter C in parentheses — a marking for confidential classified information — down in the body...

[T]he State Department said Wednesday that two of these emails in question in fact shouldn’t have been marked classified at all, and contained those "(C)" markings only because of human error.

The FBI Director testified before Congress today. He did an outstanding job. As Bamaro said some of the emails which she sent -3 in total I think-were not marked classified but were classified.

Hillary did not destroy any emails. She asked he attorneys to separate the official emails from her personal emails and comply with the governments request. They asked her if she wanted to keep her personal emails and she told them no. They were then deleted. Per the FBI Director's testimony.
The FBI Director said it was simply not true that many others had been criminally prosecuted for similar offenses. He said there had been one person in the last 100 years and he had been charged with espionage.

Do you honestly believe she personally reviewed and deleted 30,000 emails.

Was she extremely careless. Yes according to the FBI.

A rather poor email performance by Hillary.

Do I believe the FBI Director? Yes I do.

Honestly I think it takes a fairly large suspension of disbelief to believe that Hilary Clinton had her personal emails deleted, you know, just because they were old by destroying hard drives.

I also don't recall where Nixon broke into the Watergate Hotel.

I tend to worry less about whatever "muslim looking" garb Obama wore in his college days and more concerned with politicians shaking hands and smiling next to people who went on to be terrorists or dictators in the Middle East.

Also it rather annoys me how quick the GOP is to rally up a committee hearing for political theatrics and hasn't accomplished anything of note with their 6 years and running control of congress.


I'm no fan of Trump but I'm kinda glad he's vanquishing this old guard-tea party GOP coalition. Maybe he can sow the seeds for a more sensible modern conservative in 2022.

It may have been political theatrics, indeed. And in fact there were theatrics from both sides. Some of the democrats on that committee took the opportunity to obfuscate royally, bringing up the Ferguson, MO situation. However, I was thankful for it because it did clarify quite a bit for me.

I still think all of this proves Mrs. Clinton is unfit to hold federal office. I can also understand why charges weren't recommended now.

It's my opinion that Mrs. Clinton did intend to break the law, but we don't put people in prison (or we shouldn't) because of opinion. At the end of the day, I'm be shocked if anyone's voting preferences will change after all of this.

Oh and on the taxpayers having to pay for all of this "nonsense." This had to be investigated. And as I've said, I actually appreciated the questioning yesterday, theatrical as it may have been. It did clarify quite a bit. And as a taxpayer, I'd rather pay for political witch hunts than flying a candidate around on campaign trips using Air Force 1.

Apparently the Dem. staffers and researchers don't work cheap.

Pretty good video from Comey's questioning by Congress. I like how he pointed out that the average person is scratching his or head about why Clinton seems to be above the law of the land.

There is always INTENT behind anything the Clintons do. Was intent involved in placing that server in her basement? The answer has to be yes. Was it evil intent? I think it was!

The intent was based on privacy (misguided), not distribution of classified info.
