I don't blame him..he can start for pretty much any team. I wish it was after the season though...I liked having a good backup QB just in case of injuries. I wish him the best.

I don't know; he didn't even look comfortable against Kent State. Seems to have a ways to go on and off the field.

lol are y'all suggesting that Saban can't make an error in judgment? I hope he doesn't lose a game this year because some of you will have to eat some crow when you come on here criticizing the way he handle it after these responses to my post. You all have a nice night.

The thing is Jalen Hurts hasn't shown himself to be an error. His ability to stay the course and not lose his cool under pressure in the USC and Ole Miss games are why he is the starter.

I don't necesarilly agree with the timing of this, however, for people to sit here and bash a kid without knowing all the factors behind his decision and as many times as people on here have condoned and basically defended bad behavior by players on the team and holler about kids being kids and making mistakes and letting bygones be bygones is pretty bad imho. We're supposed to be the adults here. I'm not saying we have to like it, but in the end it really ain't our decision and really is not gonna effect our lives as a whole. What is the mantra around here? Next man up? Give the kid a break. It's not like he was driving in the state of Louisiana with pot in his lap and an illegal gun to boot, huh?

Most of y'all aren't gonna like what I'm about to say here, but I think he's making a HUGE mistake saying things in his press conferences like "whoever wins the team". That's leaving the door open for the players to decide who gets to lead them. Now, hypothetically, what if Barnett knows he's outperformed Hurts, but Hurts gets the nod because the team plays better for him because they've heard Saban say for the last 3 years that the starter will be the one the team responds to. He's been saying it since the Sims/Coker qb battle, and I figure it would take a team a couple of years to figure out they could actually effect who get's the job. So, yes, I think Saban could be partially to blame on this due to the way he's handled this qb competition. Even if that isn't happening (I'm certain many of you will agree that it isn't), it could be on Barnett's mind. He still should have stuck it out for the rest of the season, though.

Just a peek behind the curtain..the players didn't/don't "decide". However, the coaches do evaluate how the team responds to them at practice and in games. It's how Blake Sims won the team the year he started. Had nothing to do with his play in practice because he & Jake were equally awful. But Blake showed leadership through his struggles...in practice. And it's why he was afforded the opportunity to lead the team.

Otherwise, I think you overthought this one, Good Sir.

Maybe edit this one more time. Coaches do not let the team decide who is the QB. BB was given a fair shot but he at this time is #2. Maybe next year that might not be the case but at this time clearly he is #2. Sure players do respond differently to different QBs. Who knows? Maybe BB could have had something to do with that. I don't know. If other folks noticed BB was scared stiff going into the USC game you sure know the players would have noticed. I do know this. To suggest that Saban let the team decide is just crazy.

Neither AJ nor Coker would have looked comfortable without playing a complete half of football. I do know that that the 3 best passes of the year were owned by Blake. People are angry because of his skill.. It this was Alex Morris last year, you would not have a 21 page thread. We lost a good one, that some think could have been given a little more time in field. For instance, playing all of the second half vs Kent State. The separation between Jalen and Blake was noted. No need to play Bateman. And I think was the last straw. I think it was part Blake and maybe part bungle

My son attends a small liberal arts college. The dean of students tells parents at each freshman orientation session that struggles are not unusual for college students, but encourages the parents to ask their students to stick it out one year. The dean is a smart lady.

Agree 100%. This is (relatively speaking) a Franchione-esque screw up on Barnett's part. Much as Fran had no moral authority at TAMU - not because he left Alabama, but because of how he left - the kid can't expect people on his next team to follow him after quitting on his previous team mid-season.

But you know what? I'm happy for Cooper Bateman...

I played football for 3 years from 8th-10th grade. Our HS team was bad. One Friday we played Walker County. They were strong country boys. We were down 42-0 at the half. That evening I decided I wasn't going to play football the next year. I never thought about quitting mid-year though.

I coach now (not football) and I have kids quit all the time. These same kids usually simply stop showing up for practice and never tell me. They're always the kind of kid you wouldn't hire for a job.

I haven't read every single post in the thread & apologize if this has been talked about..I just watched The Zone with Mike Raita, Kevin Scarbinsky & Doug Segrest were saying Blake may transfer to a JUCO football team & then transfer to a D-1 school next season..I don't know how that would work..Just relaying what they were talking about..

I agree with you about this and so does a lot of other people. (outside of here)

Players should play hard no matter who is in the game.

I have coached baseball for about 15 years and have seen this a few times over the years. I always go with the best guy and not who wins the team. If some don't like it they can either sit or get over it. Playing harder for one player over another to me shows you care nothing about the team.
