You've made your point. You think the problem is with the fans. I disagree. Now give it a rest...I would argue we don't have a good basketball fan base but your mileage might vary a bit.

I really hate to say it, but I'm afraid he's not the answer. I hate to say it because I don't want to face the alternative of starting over and trying to build enthusiasm again. I just can't see the path forward with what I'm seeing on the floor. I said it the other day, but it appears right now that we're getting Grant-like results with worlds more talent. All of us can see the problems that having a Sexton on the floor can cause, but, looking at it from the outside, including from the parents of outstanding HS prospects, how on earth do you miss the tournament with a lottery pick running the point?
Well, we'll have at least another year to see how it proves out, in any case. I'll admit that I'm just a bit dispirited right now, after the early season expectations...I'm hesitant to say too much but I tend to agree with you.

Aye, there's the rub...As I mentioned in another thread, how much of those expectations included the assumption Davis and Norris were coming back?
Also, I doubt Greg makes a move for at least two more seasons. Would anyone want to fire Avery and hire a new guy to only see him come up in the FBI evidence? That would start the whole thing over again.

Correct. Which makes these "our fan base doesn't deserve better" posts so dumb. There's only a very little bit of schadenfreude directed at our own fans I'm going to tolerate...The fans can only do so much. The part of the equation that they make up is minuscule compared to that of the coaches and players.
For example. Florida Field was never an intimidating place to play until Spurrier got there. Same fans, but all of a sudden a coach that knew what he was doing and players with more ability than their opponents, and it becomes the Swamp and is the most difficult place to play.
Miami was never anything in the Orange Bowl until Schnellenberger came along.
Those are football examples, I know, but similar ones are there in the basketball world. The fanbase responds to the product on the court/field. In situations, the fans can provide a spark to help the team get back on their feet. But they cannot drive a program to success, and they do not cause 5 game losing streaks when a team is sitting squarely in the tournament with room to spare.
Crazier things have happened, so maybe this team can get on some kind of roll in St. Louis. It's the only chance left.
We shot 61% from the foul line. 18 for 31. Ball game.

The problem is with our fan base - not the coach or the players. As a rule we tend to lose interest if we're not winning 22+ games every year and everyone starts waxing poetic about how Wimp and CM woulda done it.

I would give him one more year and let him know that he will be fired unless he makes the tournament. Avery is paid the 15th highest salary of all NCAA basketball coaches. So far, he's been a horrible hire for how much we pay him.Having watched Avery coach in Dallas, things won’t change/work with him leading the show. Therefore, is it smart to put off the inevitable another year OR, do we make the move now? I’d hate to be Byrne b/c if he makes the move, he has to be sure he can get a big name coach. Not sure one is out there at this time. Would a Greg Marshall leave Wichita? Doubtful at best.... Would Chris Mack leave Xavier? Again, why would he to coach BAMA? Kentucky, or Florida, YES! BAMA, no...
Then again, keeping the status quo means we are that much further removed from our last tournament bid! I know we’ve recruited much better under CAJ, just at a loss for why it doesn’t show up on the court! Frustrating but, all we can do is say ROLL TIDE and support the guys!
