So does the death of Star Wars start with Solo?

I love George Lucas's Star Wars. This Disney version is an abomination and I want Kathleen Kennedy and her SJW Identity politics pushing agenda muppets gone with her.

I'm more than happy for a few films to fail to get this franchise back to it's Original Tone and Mythos instead of the current Meta version that is trying to mirror our USA political landscape. I'll watch CNN or Fox if I want politics shoved in my face..... not Star Wars.

So basically this would kind of be on the level of hoping Alabama loses so that an assistant coach you don't like gets fired. It just seems backwards and silly to me.

I've yet to feel politics shoved in my face by these new Star Wars movies. A lot of sci-fi films/books/etc are allegories for politics/our world. It's nothing new. It's only whether you want to get your panties twisted over the particular brand of politics that it feels thrown in your face.

George Lucas's Star Wars is no different. So I guess you should avoid it in the future as well if you don't want politics thrown in your face:

George Lucas has been pretty open about certain political influences on his space opera.

In an interview for the Chicago Tribune in 2015, Lucas stated explicitly that the movie "was really about the Vietnam War, and that was the period where Nixon was trying to run for a term, which got me to thinking historically about how do democracies get turned into dictatorships? Because the democracies aren’t overthrown; they’re given away.”

There it is. Black and white. Clear as crystal. Star Wars was about Nixon. Good day, sir.

Did you think that was too subtle? How about when, during an interview in "The Making of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi," Lucas, when asked if Palpatine had ever been a Jedi, replied, "No, he was a politician. Richard M. Nixon was his name. He subverted the senate and finally took over and became an imperial guy and he was really evil. But he pretended to be a really nice guy."

Sorry to ruin the original movies for you too. Guess George Lucas shouldn't have pushed his SJW politics.

Just got home from watching it. I find myself confused. Rogue One was a much better anthology movie than this one. Same scenario as Rogue One, take a couple lines from the OT and build a movie. The ending just left me totally confused. Then my kids tell me the guy who plays Han has signed on to do 3 movies. I guess he’ll be in Fett’s movie. Not sure what else.

I won't say spoilers but the part of the ending I think you're referencing is actually canon with some of the Star Wars shows.

I betcha the young Han Solo actor never does another Star Wars film without being recasted. My guess they'll buy out his contract or put him in two other Disney movies (more likely). I'm thinking that Kennedy will be asked to step down after the final movie in the new trilogy and Disney will end up retooling the "master plan" they have for the Star Wars universe. You can't afford to lose the core fanbase of a series unless you're growing new fans at a rate that you don't feel the loss. I don't think that is happening with Star Wars.

In fact, I wonder if this was a good buy by Disney because there is a possibility that tastes may be moving away from sci-fi in this style. The Star Trek reboot has been lukewarm despite 2 out of the 3 movies being really good films (Into Darkness was a the stinker fyi).

Possibly...I’m not in to the cartoons and some of the names tossed out, like Aurra Sing’s was seem to be from there.

I was hoping for an average movie success to make Disney take this series a little slower and maybe kinda correct some of the flaws in the new movies. But if these numbers are true then these are “ get someone fired” numbers. This is DCEU level numbers in terms of SW.

Lucasfilm and Disney are facing a moment of reckoning.

Over Memorial Day weekend, they were jolted when Solo: A Star Wars Story battled hard to hit $100 million domestically and bombed overseas with $65 million. The film badly trailed the launch of fellow stand-alone pic Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which debuted to $155 million domestically in 2016 on its way to topping $1.056 billion globally. At its current rate, Solo may not gross much more than $400 million all in.
Solo's initial performance marks a rare loss for Disney. Moreover, it is forcing the studio to re-examine its strategy for the iconic Star Wars franchise, which Disney took over when it bought Lucasfilm for more than $4 billion in 2012. Most box-office analysts say the main problem is the fact that Solo debuted just five months after Star: Wars: The Last Jedi hit the big screen, resulting in a clear-cut case of audience fatigue with the Star Wars extended universe.

Keep in mind that this is a 300 million dollar budget making it the most expensive SW movie ever made. That's 33% profit. Compare that to Justice League which had a 300 million dollar budget also and brought in 657 million dollars. That's ridiculous for a SW movie.

I thought maybe 115 strong in the first 3 days and sputter for the movie over a 4th day at the worst, but it hasn't even reached 115 according to reports. This is bad really bad for SW and Disney, and this bad is going to result in serious changes and heads rolling because other than a second week salvation, you officially have a total clunker.

Guess we'll wait and see what happens, but it looks like people decided to stay away from theaters in general this weekend.

I don't care either way, I just want to enjoy a Star Wars movie, and I'm sure I will.

I think before we give the boycotters too much credit we probably need to address the elephant in the room.... Disney put this movie in the absolute worst part of the movie year. People are broke after repeat avengers viewings, after limping into see Deadpool, and knowing that Jurassic Park and Incredibles are just weeks away. Any non star wars diehard is probably looking at this situation and saying "Solo looks like a DVD movie, but Jurassic World and The incredibles look like cant miss movies." I think that has a bigger impact on why we are at this point than the boycott. But to give the boycotters some credit... They are the ones that go see the movies many many times wheras the normal moviegoer just takes the family out and sees it and is done with it until it comes out on DVD.

Therein lies the problem - no Star Wars movie should ever look, to the average moviegoer, like a DVD movie.

And I don't buy into the Star Wars fatigue line; I'd put more stock in the competition angle and even the boycott angle before that. However, even that being the case still projects a monumental administrative failure.

Star Wars movies should be the movie that causes other, big movies released near it to suffer at the box office, not the other way around.

Add to that the fact that, whether it's socio-political issues or just poor storytelling, the current administration has alienated many die-hard Star Wars fans and the current powers-that-be have epically failed both the franchise and the fans.

I took my boys to see it and we enjoyed it. Much much much better than the TLJ. I thought the actors did a good job in their roles while Glover was phenomenal. If you get a chance, give this movie a chance. It’s a good “space western” which is what all SW movies should be.

The part that amuses me (confuses me maybe) is that I ever actually liked "Star Wars."

I walked out of "The Force Awakens" bored to tears (the only time in my life I've ever left a movie).

Nothing personal folks, to each his/her own, but I literally don't get it anymore. And Solo was my favorite character.

Shoulda done the Lando standalone instead of this Solo standalone. There is not an actor alive right now - that anyone knows about at least - that can recapture the charisma of a young Harrison Ford as Han Solo but there is a talent who could capture Billy Dee Williams as Lando.

I don't believe this.

I think Chris Pine is one. but he is way too big for a role like that. They specifically got him to play Jack Ryan because of his resemblance to Harrison Ford.

I'm pretty sure the internet would have been broken had the announcement been made that James T. Kirk was going to play Han Solo.

Though this t-shirt design would have become even more popular:

So I saw it and I enjoyed it. The story was thin and predictable but it was actually not bad outside of some of the worst cinematography I've seen in a major studio film in forever. There were scenes that were so dark I could barely tell who was speaking. Overall I recommend it

Yeah there lies the problem with casting him, but it is someone I could see before the guy they got playing him.
