From what Ive heard and read:

1) If the #1 team is closer in proximity to a bowl that is in the state of the #4 team then they automatically choose the other semifinal

2) If the #1 team is closer in proximity to a bowl that the #4 team is closer than the #1 team then the #1 team has the option to choose the other semifinal.

We chose the #2.

FWIW the #2 team has no sayso in the matter. For example:

Semis are Cotton and Orange

1) UA
2) Clemson
3)Texas A&M
4) Oklahoma

Alabama could exercise their right to play in the Orange due to the proximity of Oklahoma and force Clemson to play a true road game
