When Saban retires - how will it go down?

Every tried your hand at directing funerals? Sheesh!

Yes I have...and it's no fun. Persons grieve in different ways and in grief underlying tensions can quickly surface.

History says that there will be a slow decline...time will tell if that's begun or if we're just in a dip and will respond by winning the SEC next year. As CPB aged he became less and less involved with the players...he did usually put together the game plan and then let the coaches carry it out. Same with Vince Dooley at UGA (from former players.)

He's more like to retire after next year than stay until 2029.

I don't mean to pile on...
I'm new, but I've been reading a long time. Jeff, you have a lot of observations, and I know from time to time, we all hit on some of our observations. But it seems like so many of yours involve bad for Alabama. I've read you post things similar to "I'm just being a realist," and I understand, and I even think you might be right about Saban's retirement being much sooner than later.

But just seems like the glass is always half-empty in your posts. Don't take that the wrong way; we're all Bama here.

we've experienced unbelievable (dare I say unimaginable) success over the last 10 years...5 national titles and 7 national title game appearances.

so, i guess technically it would be a "decline" if we become a team that is consistently in the mix every season for the SEC and playoffs but doesn't go to the playoffs every year.

to me the question is more whether Saban will be satisfied with that instead of being the odds on favorite every year to win the national title...and will fans have the patience and perspective to accept that against the backdrop of the last 10 years?

nothing like what we've experienced the last 10 years can go on forever and we've probably seen the last of that kind of dominance from Bama.

but that doesn't mean we can't be a perennial powerhouse for the remaining years under Saban nor does it mean we can't be a perennial powerhouse for years to come after Saban retires.

i'm not sure anyone can ask for much more than that.

You know we've gone two years without a title before...

If Coach Saban is healthy, he is going to want to coach, period. I can advise him from watching my dad in retirement. He hated not having anything to do. He had helped my mom watch my boys for a few years, and was about to find part time work when he passed away suddenly in April. I don't know if the inactive time after retirement hastened his passing (it was a heart attack) or not. But I can tell you that driven people do not enjoy sitting around and passing the time. And coaches, great coaches like Nick Saban, usually don't have "hobbies." They coach. So yes, I can see another 10 years so long as he remains healthy enough to do it.

I have no idea but I'd guess he'd consider it after another National Title. I'm sure Byrne is on top of it but only CNS and Ms. Terry really know.

Yes Bama Football was down this year. How could it NOT be given defensive injuries, misses on recruiting, losing players for personal reasons and not developing mentally and/or physically after arriving. We had a bad year. Yes 2 losses is a bad year at Bama because the goal and expectation is clear.

Is Bama Football in decline? It has crossed my mind but I ain't buying in to that just yet. We lost 2 games by a total of 8 points with rookies and non-starters in key spots and leadership positions.

In short I'll be more concerned about Saban retiring after the next National Title. And when he does I'll say Thank You, wish him well and gear up for another rebuild of Bama Football.

RTR!!!

I can be a bit pessimistic, but I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than be like many of the fans on here that are out of touch with reality. I predicted Bama to lose the LSU game by one score. Most posters predicted Bama to win by double digits.

Everytime I hear Saban get asked this question, what strikes me is his reality is much different from a normal person's reality. If I had millions and millions in the bank, I would retire, travel, spend time with hobbies, etc.
But Saban, coaching seems to be what he is, who he is, his purpose. Made a comment that sounded like he thought he could loose purpose if not coaching, referenced Bryant (or perhaps the interviewer brought Bryant up.). Much stronger statement than other statements about him easing up because he now gets in the pool a few times per year.
Yea, he is getting old, but looks darn healthy to me, many years healthier than his age.

You've been right a lot lately -- some of it unfortunately, lol.
I know you wound up being correct on your prediction after the LSU game that we were out of it. But at the time, none of us had any way to know what was coming in Starkville. And obviously, no one can know for sure, but what happens if Tua doesn't get hurt? I honestly, seriously believe in my heart we take down Auburn. And I believe we get into the CFP, if that happens.

We'll never know. And I get the "wanting to be a realist" thing, but it shouldn't always be "HEY, Oh my GOSH, watch out for that freaking train!"

That's all I'm saying. ;)

I called for Bama to win every game this year except LSU. I thought Bama would win against AU even with Mac.

Isn’t it funny that only eeyores post “ When does Saban retires threads” and only drunk pumpers post “Is this the Greatest team of all time” threads. I guess normal posters are too busy enjoying the moment and not worried about our eventual decline or status amongst other great teams to post about it.

Life is good being an Alabama fan even if we are going to the Citrus Bowl.

We all see the world around us through the lens of our personal experience. You think that others are not being realistic. That means that you think that you see something that they do not see. You are correct - but no two people see the same thing. The world that you see is no more or less real or realistic that the world that anyone else sees.

You will always be pleasantly surprised by the world if you see nothing but gray and disappointment.

This is simply not true. I'll leave it at that.
