Let's Do This: 2020 QB Discussion

Jones is the starter without question. Bryce Young will have to prove he is better than Jones. And heading into the 2020 season, I doubt Young will beat him out. Tua could not beat out Jalen, Bryce will not beat out Jones.

Was Mac the SEC Offensive Player of the Year? Jalen was. That’s comparing apples and oranges.

we wont really be able to tell anything until we see Young at A day and through practices. Even then, Mac will more than likely start the opener. Considering what Tua did in relief of Hurts, Mac will be on a shorter leash than Hurts. On another note, you could just tell Tua had it just from the A day game. I would have been comfortable with him as a freshman starter.

The difference was Jalen already had a 14-1 season with a NCG appearance on his resume when Tua arrived which made it tough for Tua to unseat him immediately. Jones is just 3-1 as a starter.

3-1some people are so against Mac they don't seem to be counting that he started against Arkansas and Western Carolina.

M. Jones KNOWS the OFFENSE thoroughly. How LONG will it take for Brice Young to know it as good as Jones? After SPRING Practice? In fall camp? In 2021?

Tua beat out Jalen. CNS simply would t pull the trigger until the locker room was in revolt at halftime of the NCG and he had no choice. Tua won the team and the rest of the offensive coaches long before CNS put him in the game. I get his loyalty to Jalen, but has Saban evolved after experiencing that or will
It take a loss to make him switch if BY develops anything like Tua.

Yes 3-1, my apologies. It's tough to evaluate a QB vs. Arkansas and Western Carolina however. I'm not against Mac. I'm just looking at all our options. My point was Jalen had a resume going into the QB competition and therefore was tough to beat out. I think if Jalen and Tua would have both started their competition from scratch Tua would have won the job immediately.

To redshirt a player with Young’s ability is just a waste. He is a 3 year player if he meets expectations. I am sure Saban will have a good assessment of him by the end of spring practice.
I am excited about the prospects regardless. Looking forward to A-Day!
I don't know about the redshirt being a waste because of his size, but I do understand why you are saying it. He definitely needs to beef up some and if he can't seem to add some weight, he may need to use a redshirt. I feel like Scott Cochran can get him to beef up though.

He is only 20 pounds lighter than Kyler Murray.

Ten pounds of muscle is reasonable between now and August with the type of nutrition, supplementation, and workout regimen he can get from a top flight S&C program.

I think Mac Jones is more likely to be the SEC OPotY than be on the bench by game 12 barring injury.

Taulia is a developmental player and I think he might stick around if Mac ends up staying for 2021.

I’m reserving judgement for Bryce Young until after A-Day.

I would imagine Mac has the edge going into the spring since he has more experience and more time in the system. Bryce just has such a huge upside that I'm excited about what he can do at Bama. I really hope Bryce is patient enough to stay around if he doesn't win the QB competition right away. Tua even stated that he would have transferred had he not been put in against UGA in the NC game. That's the thing with young guys that are as highly touted as recruits as Tua or Bryce.

* Mac starts next year, is a Heisman finalist and leaves for the NFL.

* BY is his backup, takes over the starting job as a true sophomore

* Lia stays to continue to learn - leaves after the season

* No idea about Paul Tyson, but he won't see many snaps.

* Maye signs in December to keep the QB room full of talent
I think Saban has learned from 2017 and as soon as BY is ready, he takes over. Probably by mid-season. Just a hunch - MJ is really good, but BY has the potential to be GREAT.

Lord, I hope not. I expect a tight battle between Mac and Young, with, perhaps, Young starting over Mac before the end of the season, depending on developments...

One thing of note going into the QB battle to take into consideration. We return almost our entire OL. Jalen helped when our OL was shuffling and his running ability was an added threat that a pocket passer would struggle with. If we were replacing more starters on the OL, I’d be more on the Taulia or Young train. Mac stays in the pocket because that’s what he has always done. Not saying it’s a forgone conclusion in who wins out but something to think about.
