Ohio State is stockpiling talent at this point. I wonder how many years they will give Day without winning a title?
look for Georgia for a clue. Kirby entering his 6th year with all the talent in the world. many dawgs expect to be in the Playoffs this year with a very good chance to win it all. if that does not happen ( again) , the Kirby hype will be just that. one thing both Smart and Day have in common, both played for the NC in their 2nd year and both loss to Alabama. so there's that....Ohio State is stockpiling talent at this point. Day is much more impressive to me than KS at this stage. He will be dominating the B1G for a number of years.look for Georgia for a clue. You are right SJC and we have two 5* DT's in Tim Smith and Damon Payne. It would be very nice to get either one, but luckily Bama has built some depth on the Dline with the last 2 classes for the first time in awhile. as long as we have quality depth and talent , the elite players will come. Barmore and Quinnen Williams are great recruiting success stories to sell to prospects. neither were highly touted nor highly ranked, but the development and coaching done by our staff is nothing short of amazing and their high draft status is a reflection of that concerted effort.
He announces Thursday the 8th. I think he verbally commits to Bama. I hope he does not change his mind between now and December (unless he commits to Clemson Thursday.. lol). RTRDo we snag J. Alexander tomorrow or does he head to Clemson? Hate to see an instate kid that good get away.
I have always maintained that Alexander will be back in the fold when he de committed. I haven't changed my stance.Do we snag J. Alexander tomorrow or does he head to Clemson? Hate to see an instate kid that good get away.
Oats is severely underrated. I could see him moving up to 5 star status with a stellar senior season. The young man can move for his size!!You are right SJC and we have two 5* DT's in Tim Smith and Damon Payne.
Correctamundo, it will be Thursday, hoping for a good result here.He announces Thursday the 8th. I think he verbally commits to Bama. I hope he does not change his mind between now and December (unless he commits to Clemson Thursday.. lol). RTR
On that subject, its no coincidence that Clemson is once again our main competitor for top in-state kids.Do we snag J. Alexander tomorrow or does he head to Clemson? Hate to see an instate kid that good get away.
It's a scheme thing. Edge DE's like JTT candidly are not natural fits for our D since our Edge players are OLBs. We would either move him to OLB, where he'd have to learn pass defense, drops, zones, reads etc, or we'd have him bulk up to 290+ and play more like a DT/DE hybrid. Jon Allen did that, but good number of the top line and bigger Edge DEs just don't want to make that move from a scheme standpoint. And the cake walk conference.
we’ve also underperformed at the elite defensive end category. We’ve had highly ranked guys who turned into solid players, but we’ve never had a game changing defensive end at the level Ohio State has.
Very well said. It's a scheme thing. Edge DE's like JTT candidly are not natural fits for our D since our Edge players are OLBs. 100% correct. Even with the hybrid alignments we use, that "True DE" is most often a hybrid guy at 285-290 which gets into DT territory (last year it was Ray when healthy, Eboigbe and Young. The lightest scholarship DL on the roster is 278 and he's a TF who has not gone through a season of college strength and conditioning. That's why a lot of our most productive DEs (for our scheme) end up as DTs in the NFL.Very well said.
A lot of the Ohio State insiders/recruiting analysts were saying they felt the fact that Ohio State runs an even front as their base scheme, which would allow JTT to line up as a true DE outside the tackles every play, would be a huge factor in JTT's decision because, apparently, JTT really wanted to be a pure DE.
Bama's scheme today is much more multiple than it was in the early Saban years -- I see a lot of 3-3-5/4-2-5 hybrid stuff that uses a true DE, but JTT still would have to line up as a 4i-technique inside the tackles a fair amount in Bama's Mint package.
Nonetheless, you are correct in saying that pure DE's don't fit into Bama's scheme quite as naturally. There's nothing wrong with that though, and one of the positive trade-offs is that Bama has produced DT's (in terms of both quality and quantity) at a rate that no other team comes even remotely close to matching.
Exactly.100% correct. Even with the hybrid alignments we use, that "True DE" is most often a hybrid guy at 285-290 which gets into DT territory (last year it was Ray when healthy, Eboigbe and Young. Even if your defense doesn't have a Barmore or Quinnen type of presence on the interior this season, you have a lot of depth and the DL will collectively improve as a unit, which will make up for not having that single dominant presence. I also think there's a chance Mathis could become that star on the interior.IMHO the main question ( and....maybe the only question )on D is do we have a successor to Barmore?
And over half his staff has Alabama ties also. Would never have thought Clemson would be more of a threat than the Barn for top in-state players. On that subject, its no coincidence that Clemson is once again our main competitor for top in-state kids.
I believe that can be attributed to Dabo. With his Alabama ties, he's able to make in roads with the state and of course the recent success of the Clemson program speaks for itself. Here are some examples:
2018 : Justyn Ross ( WR) #1 player in Alabama ( he changed his mind at the last minute from Bama to Clemson)
2019 : E.J Williams (WR) # 4 player in Alabama ( Bama never really pursued him)
2022: Jeremiah Alexander ( DE/OLB) #1 player in Alabama ( Bama/ Clemson battle)
Ironic isn't it???And over half his staff has Alabama ties also. Would never have thought Clemson would be more of a threat than the Barn for top in-state players.
