there will be content moderation or it will be Parlor/4 Chan/thedonald.win or any one of the places where the far right crazies spend their days talking to one another because no one sane will talk to them elsewhere. Moderate or die as they are about to learn

I saw a discussion on twitter last night about users blocking every ad each time they log in. Wonder how many folks it would take and how long to be effective
I heard/read somewhere yesterday that a big advertiser (GM maybe?) had canceled their ad buys ( or drastically reduced the dollar amount). I think this happened as soon as Musk taking charge was announced but before he announced the creation of his “council”. I’m not certain on that timing but it does seem to fit.

I have no problem with companies like Twitter, FB, etc. moderating their platforms in a fair manner to combat misinformation or whatever rules they want to setup (like here at TideFans).

I am 100% against the feds having any part in this moderation. That is a step way too far and a step to close to government controlled internet access. This is way we need net neutrality to pass but it seems that ship has sailed.

Government trying to regulate speech is unconstitutional and most people seem to understand this. The government having corporations regulate speech on their behalf is textbook fascism and disturbingly few people seem to understand that. I have an uneasy feeling about all of this.

The only reason I have not "closed" my account is because there are a handful of companies that offer tech support through Twitter and it is normally so much quicker getting a reply vs calling or emailing. I did delete the app off my phone.

don't like it at all

but also don't know how we avoid this when people are clearly too stupid to judge misinformation for themselves and that misinformation is actively harming us
Propaganda is disinformation. It has a singular purpose, and is most effective on people either incapable of critical thinking (low intelligence) or people with extreme biases that dovetail with said disinformation (they are not always the less intelligent but sometimes they are - arguably- patently evil, at least as far as the major religious orthodoxies are concerned).
Humans (especially in our world) have grown progressively lazy in regards to discerning fact from fiction and are more willing to basically allow others to tell them how (and what) to think. Several reasons for it, not the least of which is the quest for financial success or security (or even survival); demands on one’s time from family and friends, throw in whatever one does as a hobby or for entertainment and the time necessary to dig to find reality just is not allowed to exist in many peoples’ lives. Too much sensory input to wade through in a sensible way in a few minutes.
So here we are; tell a lie long enough and loud enough and you will convince others it is, in fact, the truth.

Government involvement in moderation of these platforms brings the first amendment into play. When it was a private company moderating then it was their platform to do they wish, but when the intelligence, law enforcement, and other government agencies get involved a line has been crossed.

Lost in the shuffle is this tidbit. It's certainly eyebrow-raising considering that Texas is pursuing laws that (supposedly) provide consequences for removing posts that are seen as discriminatory towards others' points of view.
