Security cameras at an Aspen hotel captured a bear attacking a security guard by swiping that guard on his back and knocking him to the ground after the guard surprised the bear in the kitchen area. People reported seeing the bear inside the kitchen of the St. Regis Aspen Resort at around 11 p.m. Monday. The security guard went to investigate and turned a corner, startling the bear, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) said. The guard was able to get away from the attacking bear and call 911, but not before suffering scratches to his back, wildlife officials said. The guard was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries. He was released from the hospital Tuesday morning, CPW said.
Bears are very possessive about food. Once they discover it, it's theirs. Since it was in the kitchen, I suspect what happened was that, in the bear's mind, the guard was a threat to a freshly discovered food source. Once, years ago, a bear stole my wife's backpack up in Sheep Pen Gap in the west end of the Smoky's. It had no food in it, but the bear knew it had had in the past. A baggie fell out and it also had no food and never had. What was in it was the plastic drinking tube which connected to her water container on her back, so she could drink while hiking. Didn't matter. The bear bit it several times, because it had learned that baggies usually contain food...
