Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is interested in buying TikTok | CNN Business

While I think social media is generally bad, I don't think Tik Tok is more bad that say Facebook who has already been proven to be complacent in the 2016 election shenanigans and was caught providing data to Cambridge Analytica.

Forcing the break up and ultimate sale to a group lead by someone like this is a bad look (i don't care if they were in a D or R administration previously.)
Facebook may be complacent but Tic Toc will be complicit

Maybe not an optimum solution but vastly better than being connected to the Red Chineese.

yep

An American company that paid the now indicted FBI informant Alexander Smirnov in 2020 is connected to a UK company owned by Trump business associates in Dubai, according to business filings and court documents
Looking for my shocked face…😱

No company owned, in sum or in part, by China should EVER be allowed to operate in the US - doesn’t matter what they make or sell.
That applies to all Chinese Nationals; it’s a standing order, last time I checked, that they must surrender to the PRC government whatever they ask for, whenever they ask for it. I believe that also applies to any company operating in China, no matter what country houses their main/central location.
I personally think any US citizen operating a business in China should be forced to renounce their US citizenship - or be tried for treason.
Guess you can tell I’m a big fan of China…

IMO, any company owned by Chinese nationals (ergo, China) is automatically worse than its competitors, when it comes to unfettered access to biographical/geological info on American citizens in the US

Strengthen not get rid of. I think putting teeth in the moderation clauses and forcing the purging of any bots would do the trick.

End of the day if Facebook, X, Instagram, Tik Tok, etc all shut down, nothing of redeemable value would be lost.
Section 230 is a section of Title 47 of the United States Code that was enacted as part of the Communications Decency Act of 1996, which is Title V of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, and generally provides immunity for online computer services with respect to third-party content generated by its users. At its core, Section 230(c)(1) provides immunity from liability for providers and users of an "interactive computer service" who publish information provided by third-party users:

No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.
Get rid of this -" immunity for online computer services with respect to third-party content generated by its users."

funny that things like this never make it into the tomes of concern about government spending

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott boasted shortly after he began soliciting private donations for his controversial migrant busing program that there would likely “be no cost to the state” given the outpouring of support from concerned citizens across the country.

But after nearly two years of fundraising to offset the program’s costs, Abbott’s operation has collected less than half of 1% of the roughly $150 million spent on busing migrants to sanctuary cities, according to a review of state records. And CNN found that the largest donation – $900,000 – never made it into the state’s coffers, either because it was a mistake or a prank.

Records show that at most, around $550,000 has been raised to date.

TN State Rep. Monty Fritts (R) evokes scripture to say migrants aren’t entitled to biblical protections set aside for sojourners:
“As Christians, God Almighty says to be kind to the stranger and sojourner, but we are not commanded to invite the invader.”

they are not hiding who they are.

but it's apparently mean and divisive to point this out.

There was also a time when people used the Bible to justify slavery.

This is not terribly different.

Voting straight party this fall will take us places we never intended to go...

I will vote against the party that wants to tear down civil liberties, voting rights, the rights of women to have agency over their bodies, that thinks Pootie Poot is doing a heckuva job.

But I'm not a member of any organized political party. I"m a Democrat. (Hat tip: Will Rogers, not the one who used to play QB for Mittippi Taite).

‘We are losing our kids to a satanic cult,’ Sen. Tommy Tuberville warns during Utah campaign stop

Brandishing an upside-down pocket Constitution, Tuberville said the 2024 election wasn’t Republican vs. Democrat but “anti-American vs. American.”

“We’ve lost our moral values across the country. We’ve got to get back to the Constitution, and we have got to get back to the Bible. We’ve got to get God back in our country,” Tuberville said. “There’s not one Democrat that can tell you they stand up for God.”
