I didn't realize a starter had been named at Center.
This is my thought. If Brock was told by the staff Brailsford was “their guy” even though he didn’t play/practice in the spring, then we have a horse of different color. I wouldn’t blame the young man at all. And let me also add, if indeed the staff told Brock anything along those lines without getting a sense of Brailsford’s capabilities against most likely superior talent than he has ever seen (SEC talent at Bama versus PAC talent) , then IMO it would be tremendously shortsighted on their part. Truth is, we really don’t know if whatever issues (personal, academic, other) that prevented Brailsford’s participation in the spring will be taken care in the near future. Maybe others know, but it certainly isn’t common knowledge.
There many times the “heir apparent” outsider comes in and the assumption is made “it’s his job to lose. They wouldn’t bring him in if they didn’t believe he would be the starter.” Seems it was a common thought among many here this time last year the QB job was Tyler Buckner’s job, based on playing for Rees at Notre Dame and “CNS wouldn’t bring him if he wasn’t better that what he already had”. We saw how that played out.
Now if Brock is heading to TCU to be closer to family in Ft. Worth and play for the hometown team, that is understandable as well.
I remember attending a high school practice when my son played. I was also very good friends with the head coach, so he understood I wasn’t questioning his decision making- just genuinely curious. He had a kid about 210 lbs playing center for two years. Clearly a smart young guy, but also it was apparent that from a physical and athletic point of view, there were others simply more “gifted” playing behind him. Basically I asked him why? And his response was very telling.
He said “I think of players in the biblical sentence of “talents”. How many are given and do you do with them? Do you bury them in the ground because you’re afraid someone will rob you, or do you use all of them to the greatest benefit? That kid at center gives me everything, all the time. He will fight for you from when the sun comes up until it sets in the west. Those other kids have all of his capabilities and a bunch more. But they don’t know what it means to give “all their talents” in order maximize the value. That 210 lb center is my object lesson. He is giving it ALL every day. The others need to understand that is my expectation for them.”
Brailsford maybe the greatest thing since sliced bread. But does he complete? When the nut cuttin’ time comes, will he fight? The time to find that out was in the spring and we didn’t get a chance to see it. So any benefit of doubt in my mind went to Brock.
If Brock is leaving because he “believes” he lost his starting position or “will” lose it., then that is disappointing. But if he was told he lost it to a player that didn’t practice or play a snap in the spring, then my disappointment is misdirected. It should be toward the staff.
