ESPN had Pete Thamel on today and he point blank said "private equity companies are headed to college football" and then went onto talk about the report 'Audio posted about the Big 12. He said this more than likely will be where CFB is going in its current state.

Remember, "everybody" wanted fair, and I hope those who desperately cried for the poor abused college athletes to be treated "fair" like what it produces.

Well like most sane CFB fans I am totally against where the game is headed. That said, that conference at the very least should drop the "12" part of its name. They haven't had 12 teams in years.

I know it's weird because it's new, but I actually don't have an issue with this. This doesn't seem any different to me than bowl games having sponsors, and I've always liked the aspect of bowl game sponsorships.

This could actually be pretty cool if they played their cards right. The Pop Tart Bowl has a pretty cool ceremony. What if a company sponsored a conference and started some kind of tradition in the same spirit as the pop tart bowl, and it became associated with the conference championship game? I'd be here for it. It could only be good for college football, because tradition and pageantry are what college football is all about

This stuff is why I'm slowly losing interest in a sport I absolutely loved. A perfect fall day for me was to be in front of a tv from noon until after midnight watching every game I could find. A remote and a glass of sweet tea were my only necessary companions.

Now I can't say I care that much. I can hardly keep up with who is on Bama's roster today, because they likely won't be there tomorrow, much less the rest of the SEC or the larger CFB world. They can rename the SEC the Taco Bell toilet conference for all I care.

I'm a little cynical at this point.

It's just fascinating watching the rapid destruction at this point. There's little eft of what I actually loved about CFB anymore, so watching this train crash is the next best thing.

But as I've stated may times recently I'm not sure how much CFB I'll actually watch this fall. I wouldn't be surprised if I found myself out camping, working on my old truck, etc. instead of watching TV all day.

I have found myself less and less emotionally invested every year. I got pumped up for basketball this year, because of the uncharted territory we were in. But I found myself watching last year, uninspired.

I’m assuming part of it is because I’m spoiled as a Bama fan. But I’m assuming a bigger part of it is that I’m tired of the orchestrated drama of it all

Funny thing CC is this is the demographic they are after. Not necessarily “the teenage girl” but the compromised “entertainment seeker”.
They better be after the demographic that pays the bills. Because with the ever-increasing costs it will take to get and keep players, the money has to come from somewhere.

Pretty shocking (and tacky) to me that they’d do this but it is a savy move if you think you’ll be the only one to do it. I’d imagine the acc would be next to get Florida st and Clemson to drop their quest to blow the league up. The amounts of money getting thrown around in college ball rn is just wild.

CBS Sports is reporting that the Big 12 is also exploring the sale of 15% - 20% of the league to a private equity firm out of Luxembourg. Other media outlets have also picked up the story.

Note that this is separate and apart from selling naming rights.

Big 12 considering private equity investment of up to $1 billion for as much as 20% of conference - CBSSports.com

The terms of the cash injection, the percentage of the league that the PE firm would own, and whether the Big 12 would get anything else of value are still under negotiation.

The article doesn't say whether the PE firm's ownership would be in perpetuity, for the period of the current grant of rights, whether a new extended grant of rights might be in the works, or whether the PE firm could sell some or all of its ownership to another entity.

That last part's a huge big deal. Absent prohibitions, the PE firm could sell to, say, an entity owned by gambling magnate Steve Wynn. No conflict of interest there....move along....Mr. Wynn is a legitimate businessman operating a perfectly legal business. Nothing to see here.

It also doesn't say whether the PE firm's ownership rights would include receiving a pro-rata share of any monies from the sale of naming rights.

So the terms, conditions, representations and warranties of what would be sold, for what consideration, with what strings attached, are murky. I'm guessing the Big 12 and the PE firm themselves probably don't yet know.

Still, the basic idea is that the PE firm gives the Big 12 a bunch of cash of an amount and on a schedule TBD. Plus maybe some other stuff. In return, the Big 12 gives the PE firm a TBD percentage of ownership.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
