My recollection from online watching of stations from Tampa and Orlando was that each county had shelters where you could bring your pets. That eliminates that poor excuse.

I also remember the Tampa station emphasizing repeatedly that if you are evacuating from the coast to take your pets, because "they will drown!"

I've tried, Paul.....and just can't imagine how you could leave your pet (or any animal really) behind like that.

Most just couldn't do it.

I think one of our local TV forecasters said that October averaged about 10F above the normal daily high. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that hurricane season had been extended, with the Gulf still as warm as it is...
