Trump's Policies Part 2

Heck, as I've said here before - we're likely going to need more tax revenue to make the US economy healthy long-term. I believe that's our duty to the next generations.

Just don't ask for more until we see real, substantive cuts.

More revenue should be linked to corresponding spending reduction: imo a 1% tax increase across the top 2 - 3 tax brackets must be linked to verifiable reduction in federal govt spending by 3% across the board. For each and every federal govt agency. It sounds harsh but has to be done imo. And yes I am well aware that it will affect my bottom line since my reimbursement from seeing patients in my clinic is directly from Medicare. And yes I am well aware that this would impact my parents and in laws….all 4 of them are on social security and and on Medicare/advantage health insurance.

The point is that Christians are called to help people out of the overflowing goodness from their hearts - forcing people to do so is the antithesis of what giving to the needy is about.

I have also heard the "good old days" pining for when charity was the only thing available for the poor, the hungry, the unsheltered.

The fact is that charity wasn't nearly enough. You can choose to live in a good society that cares about its people. Or go live in the woods, live off the grid, hunt and grow your own food.

We are getting back to the old argument here that libertarianism is just selfishness writ large. People that want to enjoy the fruits of said society but bristle at having to be responsible for its upkeep.

I followed up with saying that I'm glad our government helps those in need.

I simply disagree with using scripture regarding helping the needy with helping people via taxation. I'm for both, but they are not the same thing.

Yep. The whole hypocrisy of those who would push that whole dystopian/selfish agenda yet at the same time proclaim to be followers of the Nazarene. I've said before here that Republican Jesus is a cult.

All religions are full of extremely pious people in public. Republican Jesus, Democrat Mohammad (I will never forget American Palestinian supporters cheering the massacre on Oct. 7th). The truth is no one religion has cornered the market on grace.

I'm pretty sure we've gone over this before, but paying taxes for public services is part of the social contract.
The social contract I signed up for did not include hundreds of million dollars for pet leftist goals around the world, nor did it include lifetime employment for government workers.

You're not being forced to live in this country, so yes, taxes are optional. People move to certain states to avoid state income tax.

I guess you've not read any of my posts about this one...

I've zero problem paying taxes, nor do I have a problem with taxes helping people. In fact, that's about all I want my taxes to be used for.

My point (again) is that acting like taxes fulfill a Christian's biblical command to help the needy is superficial and silly.

How about using taxes as an excuse to not help the needy (not referring to you or anyone here, ca)?

I'm tired of conservative Christians using the Bible like a sledgehammer when it comes to their pet social issues but ignoring the more "socialist" parts.

What socialist parts? One can reject socialist-style governments and have a charitable heart at the same time. Truth be told, I don't recall reading any sort of suggestions for government in the Bible, socialist or otherwise.

NVM. I'd rather not get into this now. (I wasn't referring to the government, which is why I put socialist in quotes).

Can you clarify your question? It sounds like you're talking about people who don't give to the needy (directly or through charitable donations) because they pay taxes. I'm not sure I'm familiar with people who do that.

Trump has no real policies.

What he says he’s in favor of this morning will change by midafternoon. Unlike LBJ, Nixon or Clinton, it won’t be because he polled it, it’ll be because somebody hit one of his grievance sensors.

Which actually sums him up quite well - he combines the worst elements of Reagan-W stubbornness with the worst elements of our squishy poll-driven recent leaders like Nixon and Clinton.

We’ve had 3 presidents in my lifetime who weren’t one or the other - Carter, Daddy Bush, and Obama. Two got creamed after 4 years of being neither totally stubborn nor totally reactive.
