I had no problem with W sending in the Marines, in the King matter, which was much more widely spread and violent than these. But, he sent them in with clear ROE and they fulfilled that role and stayed out of LEO's way. When I first heard of his grandstanding in sending in a Marine detachment, the first thought I had was "To do what?" Who wrote their orders? Trump? Miller? Hegseth?
Have you seriously not been paying attention the last ten years?

Well, unless they affirm his delusions like those lawyers who clipped a few quotes out of context and tried to convince him that Thomas Jefferson overturned the results of the 1800 election.
Nothing new about that. He already missed out a bigger one on the pandemic, where he was more worried about fixing blame than fixing the problem. Not only can he not hit the three, he can't hit the layup, either.
i keep seeing protestors going up to the military members saying “you took an oath to the constitution and not to the president” and all the liberal influencers keep running with it. However when you look at the actual oath of enlistment you start to see a problem.
It does say “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic” but it also say “I will Obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me”. No where does it say “I can interpret what is a constitutional deployment of troops when there is a political disagreement between a governor and the president”.
One of my favorite movie lines of all time came from the late Gene Hackman “We are here to defend democracy not practice it”. That’s basically the military mindset in a nutshell.

Newsom is trying to look Presidential. Trouble is, his record is catching up to him, even among the progressive wing of the state legislature in Sacramento -- which is pretty much all of them.

But the gist is that, against all Economics 001, the California legislature hamstrung oil refineries, simultaneously (1) making them horrendously more expensive to run than they are in the rest of the country, and (2) limiting the prices the owners can charge for finished product.
What could go wrong?
Surprise, surprise, some refineries have declined to run at a deficit, and have shut down and moved production capacity elsewhere. Others are in the process of doing that. Which means that thousands of high-paying jobs are also headed elsewhere.
And because gasoline made in the rest of the country doesn't meet California's requirements, there are no pipelines that send gasoline to California. Which means they have to import across the Pacific Ocean from China, which has them over a barrel. So gasoline prices are not only already the highest in the country, but will rise with the decrease in supply from the shuttered refineries. And because the Chinese aren't exactly known for their environmentally-friendly production methods, global carbon emissions go up.
Jobs lost, prices up, unemployment up, and pollution up. High-end petroleum engineering talent taking their skills, earning power, and tax base, elsewhere. Likewise non-engineering production workers, though at a slightly lower level of compensation.
Now even the left wing of the Democratic party is going, "Hmmmmmm.....maybe we shouldn't have done that."
There's also a passing mention of the $20 minimum wage costing tens of thousands of jobs, especially in food service. But the main thrust of the article is on oil refineries.
Meanwhile, Newsom trumpets his main qualification for President: "But Trump......"
That's the scary part about Donald Trump (1) having fired all his competent advisors, and (2) being a lame duck the day he took the oath.
His advisors now consist of Kristi Noem, Pete Hegseth, RFK, Jr. and similar mental giants. I really don't think that matters much, though. Because, not being worried about re-election, he wouldn't listen to Henry Kissinger (I know Kissinger is dead, but you get the idea).
So I don't think he does have advisors who know how to play the game. Even if he did, I don't think he'd listen to them. And yes, he's missing a golden opportunity if he'd just have one stateman-like moment. But as others have said, he's constitutionally incapable of that.
Still, he might be in luck....based on the comments from Newsom and Collins, they just might insist on making the opportunity for him.
What a clown show. You can't make this stuff up.

Not sure I buy into this number. What it probably represents is the total travel costs, salaries, food, housing, etc., for the troops. What this doesn't count is the fact that things like salaries and food and equipment costs are spent whether the troops are back at their base and just training or are actually deployed and doing something. I'm sure it's still a big number but not $134 mil.
Like I said, The Young Turks (far left ‘news’) outlet blasted him last night by saying “he and many of these establishment democratic leaders are hoping for a George Floyd type political win with these weeks long riots, but people are tired of seeing cities burn and Newsom is only making Trump look better by putting on this front”.
It’s why I’ve kinda turned off BTC because he won’t say one thing negative about Newsom and every thing Trump does is a step towards Nazism. You cry wolf and let Rome burn and people get very turned off by it. Newsom wants to be president and his only way to do it is being the most popular progressive. I think if the Democrats ran Fetterman they would win, but as Newsom is proving… most of them are as predictable in opinions as the republicans they complain about so someone that doesn’t color in the lines will never be their nominee.

My guess is that a staffer at the Pentagon (a major who drafted it for his colonel, who modified it for his general who edited it for the Secretary.
I doubt Trump was involved at all, but the SECDEF probably signed it.
I do not want to be here but my family is for the most part. Florida and its political vibe is a big reason I'd like to leave. DeSantis can jump off a cliff. My reaction to his "indoctrination" rant is to laugh since I've been using that word forever, especially when talking about politics, bigotry and such. I developed those beliefs during my life in Alabama where you either fall prey to the thinking of other white people or you have to figure out why they are like that. The press is the thing influencing our take on what's happening now. It's influencing the vote, of course. I could see who still watched conservative "news" sources when some commented on being able to tell that Harris was stupid just by listening to her talk. Oh really? Just exactly what did she say that was stupid? And how in the world could anybody listen to the idiot we have in office now and see intelligence as going in his favor? The media of choice is steering how we see things and what we believe when it comes to that. Unfortunately, a lot of conservative media is steering us into a big problem. I doubt seriously that rump will be sending troops to every protest. There are far too many of them planned all across the U.S. Just let a photo journalist get a pic of some uniformed dude aiming a gun or throwing tear gas at me with my rolling walker, gray hair and a sign. Conservative media would never show you that. They will show you pics such as the ones some of you are posting right now. Do you even see what you are posting? Do you question whether or not that's being done by trouble makers or people who sincerely want to keep immigrants and non-immigrant brown skinned people safe. Do you know how many peaceful protesters are there? Do you know there was music an choreographed dancing? Or do you want so badly to believe that these are all dangerous fanatics out there? Protests I have participated in against this creep and his antics have been peaceful. I've been in a few and even when yahoo rumpies tried to start something, we just ignored them. Creepboy is capitalizing on whatever he can.

I mean, this reminds me of Jack Germond and Jules Witcover's observation that in 1988, Michael Dukakis had to provide a rationale as to why he should be President beyond the fact he was not George H.W. Bush. "Good jobs at good wages" wasn't going to do it.
(One after-the-fact review suggests that Dukakis was talked into running for President by his chief advisor, John Sasso, and viewed his even winning the nomination as a 1000-1 longshot because Gary Hart and Jesse Jackson, in particular, were better known. The assessment basically says that Dukakis didn't really want to be President until all of a sudden he had the delegates to be the nominee - and that this was too late in the game to be deciding how to run for President).
Donald Trump, for all of his MANY flaws, COULD have gone down as an all-time great in the sense he was willing to take huge risks and gamble that frighten other politicians away. One of the most common approaches is to decide to be President with a view towards doing all this great stuff in your second term - only to discover that the moment you're re-elected, the race to replace you begins and nobody in your party is going to stick their necks out too far for you again.
Here's the truth: barring a major war, you are only President for ONE YEAR.
Year 1 - you're the new President and your party is compelled to go along with you.
Year 2 - your party kinda steps away from things that look like it may lose them their seats
Year 3 - the opposition almost always picks up seats and becomes rougher to deal with while if you got wiped out at the midterm, your own party is selective about vocal support
Year 4 - the election year
Year 5 - you're a lame duck but the Reps and Senators who run in Year 6 aren't so good luck
Year 6 - almost always a bad year (FDR 38/Ike 58/Reagan 86/Bush 06; Clinton took his whooping over the top in 1994, and Obama DID lose the Senate in 14 when the GOP corraled nine seats)
Year 7 - your last chance to look like an historic figure
Year 8 - your replacement is on the ballot, so you're sorta second banana at best
Yes, you can nominate SCOTUS judges, but most everything after year one is just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
But George Floyd wasn't nearly the win (just like the Gingrich 1995-96 shutdowns) that we keep being told it was, either. If anything, it took the focus off how Trump botched the pandemic and allowed him to play the racial grievance card far more effectively.
Biden had a 9-point lead on April 9, as the pandemic had kept the world shut down for a month. It was up to 15 points in June and down to 12 in July, narrowed back to nine in August, dropped to around five in October - and Trump lost by a little over 4 points. Yeah, the emotions over Floyd's death in May pushed the polling worse and - of course - the BLM folks and Democrats overplayed their hand. But flip 41K votes in PA and 75K votes in MI (out of 5.5 million) and Trump wins anyway.
I'm sorry, we have way too many political myths in this country that need to be thrown out with the bathwater. George Floyd might could be called a win in May but by September, it didn't matter. Had Trump somehow been able to reopen the whole country for the school year in August 2020, he probably wins again despite running a wretched campaign.
Ultimately, things are going badly in LA.....and in lots of other places. There's nothing I can do about it, I'm just gonna go watch some Star Wars Theory and Stupendous Wave videos.
