It depends on what you consider ‘stand up to’. If it means holding onto it indefinitely then no, but potentially deliver some harsh consequences if they are able to close it then yes. Naval warfare is historically is a tricky thing to predict even when it appears to be a total mismatch.
Based on the analysis I saw earlier today the most effective means they have to close shipping would be to mine the shipping lanes which would be an act of war in my opinion. Trump has opened up Pandora's box now and should be committed to deal with the threats Iran presents to the global economy.

It wasn’t Trump’s birthday party, It was the USA’s. it was planned for years. Funny, the folks making fun of that parade may need the services of the U.S. Army if this is truly the start of WW3.
Guess it's par for the course but in much of the debates online what our military accomplished here probably isn't getting the recognition it deserves.

Now for MY political take........

Compare this mission with the failed Afghanistan withdrawal under the previous administration and you can easily see why so many to this day think Biden was a complete DOOFUS with everything he did while in office.

It was Trump’s birthday party parade.
We can compare what the Army was planning to do in the original permit issued in 2024 under Biden for the Army 250 years celebration.

----
Furthermore, the permit filed under Biden's administration proposed the following events on Page 2: a "concert by The United States Army Band, musical ensemble performances by the US Army Band & US Army Field Band, performances by the US Army Drill Team, Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps and equipment/soldier displays by the 3rd Infantry Regiment and the Presidential Salute Battery." Under a question about whether any road closures or traffic management would be required, the permit applicant, a project manager with the U.S. Army Military District of Washington named Paul A. Hadwiger, checked "No.”
——

In other words, prior to Trump becoming president, the Army was planning a celebration festival with the Army Band, etc.
However, after Trump became president, he has turned it into a military parade with troops & vehicles to celebrate his birthday.

well if he would act like a decent human being and stop acting like an egotistical donkey every second of the day then people wouldn’t constantly complain about him.

Also I’m well aware of what the army is and isn’t.

Come back in 6 months and let’s see if Trump has killed the archduke and his wife or if this passes. Biden botched the withdrawal, yes, but l don’t recall Trump (the king of avoiding forever wars) ending the 9/11 war despite repeatedly saying we should.

Hey Bill - thanks - point taken!

Right now I will be grateful we did not lose any military personnel, the enemy was not tipped off to our mission, and as I said before - very impressed with our military being able to pull off such a complex mission.

And yes - totally agree - we'll have to see how it all ends.

No, but can they do enough to cause losses? Yes. Can they make it financially unreasonable to continue shipping through the straights. Yes. They don’t have to close it, they just have to do enough to hurt financially for shipping lines and oil producers to slow or stop .
They supposedly already have mines in the area.
My point is we have proved we can clear the mines, and there's little / no chance they fire on US Naval ships.

I think it's just saber-rattling - I don't think believe want to escalate this further against the US. They may be dumb, but they're not stupid.

I did hear earlier today that Iran ships the oil they supply to China through the Strait of Hormuz also. That likely accounts for the majority of Iran's cash flow. It becomes an issue for China that all parties need to appreciate. I would expect that Iran will be looking for other targets in order to attack the US.

Cooper just asked his retired USAF colonel the obvious question I've been wondering - how can we make a damage assessment without going inside. TBH, the guy's answer didn't make a bit of sense to me. IF we hit a vent, which I understand we were aiming for, or even very near one, then that might be a weak point leading to the interior. Unless, that is, they thought ahead and put angles in it...

Adam Kinzinger said this morning that with (highly) enriched unranium they could load it into a warhead and make the target area uninhabitable. If that is reasonably factual that becomes a flash point that will bring the US deeper into the conflict. I think about all of the Iranian supplied groups such as the Houthis who are poised now to attack Red Sea shipping. The conflict will spread and pull us deeper into it.
Was he crying when he said that?

1 billion dollars a day go through the strait. Mixed with the tariffs and the “beautiful big bill” Iran has the potential to hurt us and the Arab states pretty badly if they do close it. It’s not really about our oil supplies it’s about the international reaction to the crisis.
The last time they tried this, what happened?

Vice President JD Vance signaled Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium is still intact and in Iranian control, a potentially significant problem for closing off Iran's future path to a bomb.

Iran has enough near-weapons-grade material for around 10 nuclear weapons. Asked if that enriched uranium stockpile had been destroyed, Vance told ABC's "This Week" program, that "we are going to work in the coming weeks to ensure that we do something with that fuel and that's one of the things that we're going to have conversations with the Iranians about."
