Coaching carousel 2025-26

I'm reading Ole Miss is demanding a decision from Kiffin by the time the Egg Bowl is played, but would they go ahead and fire him if he doesn't give an answer? If they actually would then probably Golding would have to coach them in the playoff.

No, firing him would trigger his buyout. That would be stupid on their part. They are just pounding sand. They would be wise to just keep their mouth shut with the media and Kiffin's agents. And what you read could be propaganda put out by his agents to rile up the OM fans. Again, to put maximum pressure on Ole Miss to pay up.

I take all of this as a sign that he wants to stay at Ole Miss making top dollar with improved NIL commitments.

One opinion is that this is all being orchestrated (by Kiffin and the AD) to make Ole Miss look good. Kiffin's family checks out Bator Rouge and Gainesville, then comes back and says: "No thanks. We like Oxford better. Coaching at Ole Miss is the better job."

Shifting gears a bit, but I do think James Franklin is a good hire for VT. The guy recruits like a madman, so at a minimum they’ll be one of the most talented teams in the ACC in the next 2-3 seasons. He usually hires competent coordinators as well.

I could be wrong, but I think this hire brings VT back to respectability, which they’ve not had very often in the post-Beamer era. Probably not championship level, but back to winning 8-9 games on an annual basis and competing for the ACC title every few years.

The problem now is that the moment one of your younglings shows some promise they get poached by teams with bigger NIL budgets.

It’s going to be hard to cultivate a foundation solid enough to jump up and surprise people at a place like VaTech in the new age of NIL.

Just don't see college ball as an option for NFL guys any longer. Coaches want to coach not put up with all the crap one has to deal with in college football these days. That is the reason Saban hung it up after all.

My suspicion is that the dirty little secret in CFB is they're pumping out resumes to the NFL left and right, knowing there's a lot fewer openings there but wanting to get out before the collapse.

Except for whichever next Pat Dye can con Auburn into a bad buyout deal.
:)

Franklin will find 9-win seasons much more tolerated at VT.

But he will also find it's tougher to do it consistently than it was when he was at Vandy, too.

Penn State (and others) will be poaching his stars left and right.

Va. Tech has officially hired Franklin now. A job with a lot less pressure. I imagine if he can get them to an ACC title and just a playoff appearance their fans will be satisfied.
I don't know man. The Tech job has turned into a career killer for some promising coaches of late. Love to see Franklin as the next in line.

Hey all! Been a minute since I stopped by, hope all is well, despite last weekend's outcome.

As for Franklin, we went from a team that won the conference several times, made a bunch of big-time bowls, and could compete with anyone in the country on any given Saturday, to not beating Liberty, ODU, and JMU consistently. We're one of the worst teams in the worst P4 conference.

If Franklin can get us back to winning 8-10 games a year, beating teams we should beat, and competing for ACC championships, that will be a huge accomplishment, and the fan base will (rightly) be ecstatic. As for the "can't win big games" issue, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. For now, I'm excited and agree with Joefus that it's a home run hire. Whether we still think that 3-5 years from now, who knows. But I'm pumped that Saturdays in the fall might mean something again, and for now that's good enough.

Cheers from VA, and good luck on the 29th!

Lane being Lane.

I guess he feels he’s maxed out at Ole Miss.

Brian Kelly thought he was maxed out at Notre Dame and LSU would open up more title opportunities. That didn't turn out too well. Lane needs to think long and hard before he decides to leave something that is currently a lot further along than what he's jumping to.

That being said, LSU's two most recent national championships were coached by The Hat and by Coach O. Proof that talent alone can win in spite of a coach that is, um, special. They used to call Orgeron - Special Ed, when he was at Ole Miss.

I think it would be a massive mistake for him to leave what he has built at Ole Miss. But this is Lane. And this is similar to what he did to torpedo Alabama's NC bid in 2016. Not necessarily all the details, but the getting distracted by the next big thing instead of focusing on the task at hand. Then again, he is privy to details none of us are. Is he running into certain walls in recruiting and roster building at Ole Miss and he sees that after this season his roster is going to implode? Does he believe he's reached the end of the extent of Ole Miss's ability to compete in the NIL world?

He's proven he is an offensive genius as well as capable of building a program. He has not yet proven he can sustain a program over the long haul like Coach Saban. But I'm not sure you are going to do that in today's world. Ole Miss will accept a drop from a playoff one year to 8-4 or 7-5 the next while you rebuild the roster. LSU won't. Florida won't.

It's a different world today. But having said that, how bad does Brian Kelly look knowing he couldn't pull off what Ed Orgeron and Les Miles were able to do?
