MAL MOORE has got to GO!

I dont think its simply Mal's fault, but i think that he has some fault in it. The buck stops here. Id like to see a sweeping reform of the atheletic department.

Yea, but I mean people have been calling for this for the last 15 years. When will it ever actually happen I guess is the real question!

There were some heavy incentives in the contract also. Up to $750,000 bonus for such things as graduation rates, conference championship, MNC, etc.

As Ira Louvin would say, cash on the barrelhead is a pretty good incentive, too.

Ah, the Louvins... I think I'm going to go bury myself in some old bourbon and older records for a while.

Let me quantify myself before I make my post. I don't really care for MM and have never made any bones about it. That having been said, I don't think we need to be calling for his head just because RR decided to stay at home. To some people, loyalty is more important than all the money in the world. I don't blame RR and I don't blame MM for RR's decision. One thing I will give MM is his not setting a deadline for hiring a coach. While , yes, this may hurt recruiting this year , at this point I feel it is important to make a sound coaching hire.

Alabama will find a good coach if we are patient and don't start calling for everyone's heads on a platter right now. Yes, I personally would have liked to have seen RR come here to be our coach. I think he would have been a great hire. I respect his decision and I wish him the best of luck in his time at WV.

Let's all sit back and see how everything goes. If we get a good coach then all will be right with the world and if not we then can form the lynch mob and clean out the athletic department.

Here, I think, is room for criticism. If the reported contract numbers are correct, then Bama's offer comes down to roughly a $750,000 annual raise in Coach Rod's base salary.

I agree. If MM believed he had his man, he should have made an offer that RR would have signed before leaving the room.

To his credit, CMM has upgraded the facilities, and we have pretty successful programs in basketball, baseball, gymnastics, and probably some others that escape me at the moment.

On the other hand, the lifeblood of virtually all other sports at UA is football. Excellence in that area begins with a coach.

I read post after post from the bosses on this board calling for Shula's head because they saw no improvement in the football team. To quote from the post-Auburn wrapup:

"But the question Alabama has to ask itself, uncomfortable as it may be, is whether Shula has the ability to take Alabama back to the days when the Tide was a regular visitor to Atlanta, a regular contender for conference titles and a staple of the annual discussion on national title contenders.

In my opinion, the answer is no. It is time for Mike Shula’s tenure as Alabama’s head coach to come to a close."

I don't think it's unfair to ask the same question about the performance of the athletic director. If asking the question amounts to Tidefans hara kiri, so be it.

Mal to blame? Spare me.

Let's review. His goal is to get a great coach. So he runs the traps with Spurrier. He thoroughly explores the possibilities with Saban, then wisely decides not to be held hostage by a coach whose ego and impermanence far outweigh his wins and losses.

Which brings us to Coach Rod. And a story.

A long time ago, Paul Bryant came within minutes of taking a job with the Dolphins. Great money, total authority, the works. He accepted in principle. But eventually, he picked up the phone and said he couldn't keep his word. He couldn't leave his players, his state, his home.

That's the kind of force Mal Moore faced in West Va. He put a great offer together. He moved quickly to get his man. In the end, the gravitational pull was too much.

So be it. We'll move on. Mal Moore will too. He's proven to this one-time critic that, this time around, he's making all the right moves.

Next time, let's hope, that will be enough.

Great Post, Uptown!

This is like herding buffalo off a cliff.

This is what I thought of.

I am someone who has no inside information and who's information comes only from watching the games, reading the news and watching the internet. from my viewpoint there's no possible way I can know if Mal is a problem. I'd like to know how many people who are calling for his head have a different source of info.

As Ira Louvin would say, cash on the barrelhead is a pretty good incentive, too.

Ah, the Louvins... I think I'm going to go bury myself in some old bourbon and older records for a while.

I'm only 25 years old and I totally agree with you. As I sit in my grey cube here at work all I can think about is sipping on a glass of Knob Creek while I listen to "If I Could Only Win Your Love", "Must You Throw Dirt In My Face", and "Are You Teasing Me".

Calm down about MM people. I was at UA from 2000-2004 and I can tell you that nearly every other sport has succeeded since he was hired. I have my own beef with him that I won't talk about here because it's a personal issue, but I do have respect for the man as far as being an overal great AD. Besides...would you all rather have Watson Brown? I didn't think so.

We went after three very, very, very, long shot coaches and lost. All things given, did we really have solid chance at any of them. I say no, we did not, but at least we tried. If we had not tried, there are those among us that would have cried we didn't. I hope we step back now, take a deep breath and offer Paul Johnson the job. The man who I've liked all along and is an excellent coach.

I disagree, we had a shot at a very great coach, but as usual, one of our very useless alumni got involved and caused that deal to go south. I also disgree about Paul Johnson, there are better coaches out there besides him.
Let's pull a Miami and hire our Defsensive Cood. Joe Kines....

Germantown~which "useless Alum" are you speaking of? And how do you know this?

One thing I do blame MM for. If both sides lawyers agreed to terms last night~I would not just simply fax a multi-million dollar contract to him while his home school pulled him to stay.

The warning signs and red flags surrounded RR and that is precisely why Mal and the PTB should have "x-ed" him out a long time ago. Competence in any manner would have never let him leave the room if they TRULY wanted him as their next coach and had put an offer on the table.

Geez guys. Lay off Mal. He's doing his best. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Give Mal a chance to recoup and fire up the plane again. I'm fully confident that Mal will get a head coach willing to take the job. Somewhere, someday.

What about DuBose? Think he'll come back if we said we were really, really sorry? What about Curry? Perkins? Sly? Terry Bowden? Brother Oliver?
