Shula's Steakhouse-Birmingham

Daddy Don needs to face facts. He, of all people, should know that coaching is a results oriented business and the fact is, Mike just wasn't getting it done. Regardless of circumstances, teams should not get worse over the course of a season. He should be forever thankful to The University for making his son a multi-millionaire in spite of his shortcomings as a HC. He wasn't going to make that kind of money selling overpriced steaks.

Shula's was our first experience with a "high-end" restaurant. We didn't see anything telling us everything was a la carte (if we had, we probably wouldn't have known what it meant); needless to say, we felt a little "betrayed" when our side dishes cost 7.50 a piece (x 4). That's $30 on potatoes and salad.

So personally, I don't sympathize with Daddy that much with him feeling deceived by Saban and certainly don't worry about him loosing business. (Even though I realize it was technically a coincidence that we had this experience at Shula's. It could have just as easily happened somewhere else...but that chocolate soufflé was the best dessert i've ever had).

Just my own experience, but if you're going to go high-end, go local. In Birmingham, hit up Highland's or Bottega...maybe Cafe DuPont.

Thanks for the suggestions...I've started to figure that out...we've been to Highland, and it was certainly better bang for fewer bucks...

I ate there with a group of about a dozen a couple of years ago, and about half the steaks were decent and the other half were not. I ordered medium rare and it came out purple and cold in the center, in a pool of blood. I sent it back and it came back out over-cooked. I guess, on average, they got it right. :conf2: I ate recently here at the new Ruth's Chris. They made Shulas look and taste bush league...

I've never been to Shula's in Birmingham, but I've eaten at ones in Tampa and in Baltimore. I've been to numerous high end steak houses, the Caucus Room in D.C., Chops, Bones and the Palm in Atlanta, Theisman's in St. Louis, and several Ruths Chris. Shula's is average, I've had much better, but on whole not bad. My wife and I both still feel that the Palm in Atlanta was the best we ever had. Unfortunately, everything being a la carte is the standard with that type establishment.

You can't go wrong with Ruth's Chris. I just don't like the idea of slathering butter on a steak. :eek2: So, I don't, when I eat there.

The best steak I have ever had is at a little place called the Slab House in between Helena and Green Pond. It doesn't have the atmosphere or ambiance of Shula's or Ruth's Chris. But if you just want to eat a good steak and not drop $100+ on it, then its a good place to go. Let me know if anyone needs directions. :BigA:

If you have money, and beef,
and a grill that never gives up,
you can start an overpriced steak resturant.
The price of the filet is high, but so is the rib-eye.

Shula's Steakhouse is just too expensive. The only reason it stayed in business is because Bama fanatics were willing to pay for a meal at the Bama coach's restaurant. Now there will not be this support and they will lose a lot of business. It is hard for most people to be able to go there regularly.
Now that Shula is out other Steakhouse's will get more business. I think they will stay in business but not make the same money.

Skip Shula's and go to 12 Steak House in T-Town. No doubt about the owner's loyalties.

When we visit Tuscaloosa and want a great steak, we always go to The Outback:)

I haven't ever been to a Shula's and don't intend to. I haven't heard of 12
Steak House, but maybe I should give it a try next visit.

It's just a franchise, anyway. Newly selected, at that time, BOT member Jim Wilson dropped by to say hello. I think he said who owned it, but I don't remember. It may have been him, since he owns the mall there. (We had a designated driver and it twarn't I.) ;)
