CONFIRMED Assists.: Steele, Thompson, Smart, Alles, Pendry, Davis, Middleton, (more)

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

I do remember a bowl game in which major applewhite led a texas comeback win and afterward he said he grew up idolizing jay barker. After hearing this, It's become very hard to hate on him. Even so, I dont think he has the coaching experience just yet. It appears as if were going to have a CO unit as far as the OC position goes. Tom Clement would be nice.

I agree with you. Applewhite seems a bit young. He spent one year at Syracuse (they went 1-10) and then one year at Rice (bowl game).

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

They're also reporting a former Texans O-line coach (no name given - Joe Pendry?) has been hired to coach the o-line. That's damned depressing.
Not Pendry, Steve Marshall. He's been O-line coach at UCLA, Tennessee, Colorado, and the Texans. Been an OC at A&M and UNC.

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

Here's someone would be great for O-line coach, Alex Gibbs.

Gibbs is regarded as one of the rare coaches who can overhaul a team's running game, have an impact on its passing game and improve an entire offense. He did it with the Raiders, the Chiefs, the Broncos and the Falcons -- and he will do it for whichever team hires him next.

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

ok, don't feel like reading this whole thread...can someone list the coaches we've hired that are confirmed...

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

Well, let's review.

He's 27 and the youngest OC in division I. His team went 6-7 in '06. Lost in a bowl game to Troy, 41-17! Was outscored for the season, 350 to 432. Had approximately 400 total yards more than the dismal CMS.

With a pile of cash, one would think we could do better (and get more experience). Why take a chance when we can get proven experience?

Ok, first we're talking about Rice. The absolute bottom of schools in Texas. I sincerely doubt that Applewhite would be hired as OC here. Probably more like a QB coach at best.

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

Do you think that Applewhite will take the QBs and whoever is the OC will probably be on the way out in a few years leaving the OC job for Applewhite?

I seriously doubt we are considering Applewhite. JMHO

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

well i read on al.com that he hired kirby smart, and it wasn't in the title...so i just wanted to see who all has been hired...

Just like on political race night in America, I think we can probably call it going to Smart right now. Also, if it already hasn't been posted, looks like Searels is going to sign up with the Bulldogs to the east... probably couldn't resist a fine opportunity to get close to home. Also, it appears that Williams is a go.

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

Dolphins safeties coach Kirby Smart has agreed to follow Saban to the University of Alabama as the Crimson Tide's secondary coach, according to the Birmingham News. Smart served for one season in that position with the Dolphins.

The News also quoted two sources as saying Dolphins running backs coach Bobby Williams was offered a staff position Friday, while Dolphins outside linebackers coach Travis Jones was interviewed for a position.

Before deciding to leave for Alabama, Saban asked several of the Dolphins' assistants if they would be interested in jobs on his Crimson Tide staff.

"I said, 'You've been in the pros now and you've been in college … I'm not trying to steer you. I'm not sure what's happening [with the Dolphins]. If you want to come back, let me know,'" Saban said Thursday. "A lot of guys who have been in the NFL for a long time will never go back to college."

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

Bring on Freddie ;)

I remember Freddie getting spanked by Tenn. 41-14 in Legion Field. I have heard he was a good coach and with Dallas? maybe, but what positions does he coach? Surely not qb., no disrespect intended.
