... sorry, didn't mean for that to come across as harsh :blush:well i read on al.com that he hired kirby smart, and it wasn't in the title...so i just wanted to see who all has been hired...
Travis Jones looks like a ******.
I'd love to see Applewhite in Tuscaloosa in whatever capacity.
He's a lifelong Alabama fan, and was named for Major Oglive. He would have been a QB at Alabama had it not been for the DuBose / Cottrell fixation with recruiting rankings.
I don't think he's quite "there" yet to be seriously considered for OC. But maybe another position -- QBs? RBs? TEs? WRs?
This guy loves Alabama, is a class act, and pushed a much more talented guy (Chris Sims) to the limit in at least two different years in college. I'm hoping there's a spot for him.

To be honest,he bailed Tx out of many games that Sims had choked in. IMO,Sims had more talent, but Applewhite consistantly out played Sims and if I remember MA came in and beat Wash. in the bowl game his sr. year. That said,I wish we would hire Clements and wash our hands of Jimbo.JMO,but JF seems to be playing games and waiting on an HC job anywhere!
I remember Freddie getting spanked by Tenn. 41-14 in Legion Field. I have heard he was a good coach and with Dallas? maybe, but what positions does he coach? Surely not qb., no disrespect intended.
Well, let's review.
He's 27 and the youngest OC in division I.
I fail to see a problem here, but then I'm performance oriented rather than age oriented.
His team went 6-7 in '06.
That's a problem if the defense performed adequately or his offense was inconsistent and turnover prone.
Lost in a bowl game to Troy, 41-17!
The 17 points is a problem to me, the 41 is not since he didn't coach "D".
Was outscored for the season, 350 to 432.
Assuming Rice played 13 games (too lazy to look it up) that's an average of almost 27 points a game (Alabama outscored it's opponents 298 to 250, an average 23 of points per game). If Mike Shula's offense had scored at the rate Rice did, this string probably wouldn't exist nor would we be celebrating a new coach. Again, unless you can demonstrate that Applewhite's offense contributed materially to the opponents 432 points (33+ per game) I don't see this as part of the equation. Sounds more like an indictment of the Rice defense and special teams which were not his responsibility.
Had approximately 400 total yards more than the dismal CMmc
Do they award style points nowadays? I thought it was just the points the offense puts on the board???
With a pile of cash, one would think we could do better (and get more experience). Why take a chance when we can get proven experience?
Ah, now there we have 100% agreement. I can't see that it matters what school his parents attended nor of what team they were fanmc I also cannot conceive of any significant bearing the person for whom he was named, who his favorite team might have been, nor even where he might have gone to school should have on the selection procesmc In my book he simply has not yet established the credentials required to qualify for the job as Alabama's OC.
Of course, Coach Saban may see things differently, and I have no problem with that. After all, to me it seems that a head coach has the right to put anyone he wishes on his staff; he just doesn't have the right to be wrong in his judgement. Exercising bad judgement in tactics, strategy, or the hiring of assistants is ultimately what gets coaches fired, Mike Shula being a case in point.
I think we can add Smart to the confirmed list....he's talked to Michael McNeil, a safety recruit.
Sarkisian, Petrino, Clements, and Garrett seem to be your candidates for OC.
Which would you think has the most ability or upside?
