CONFIRMED Assists.: Steele, Thompson, Smart, Alles, Pendry, Davis, Middleton, (more)

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

I don't know who's going to be hired, but I have faith in CNS to put together a terrific staff.

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

Mods, I know CNS said there wasnt a timetable on hiring a coaching staff but Ive read where people thought he would have a staff almost complete by the first of next week. I figured he wouldve had more hired by now since dead recruiting period ended today that way they could start getting focused on the prospective future Bama players. So, what gives? Why no official confirmations so far this weekend? :conf3: Thanks in advance...

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

I do remember a bowl game in which major applewhite led a texas comeback win and afterward he said he grew up idolizing jay barker. After hearing this, It's become very hard to hate on him. Even so, I dont think he has the coaching experience just yet. It appears as if were going to have a CO unit as far as the OC position goes. Tom Clement would be nice.

These guys are reporting Fisher has declined. They're also reporting a former Texans O-line coach (no name given - Joe Pendry?) has been hired to coach the o-line. That's damned depressing. Also reporting Applewhite has been offered.

They also reported that our coaching search and program were a joke. FWIW.

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

You know, I had not thought of myself in such inferior terms in quite a while, so I appreciate you helping me to quickly get over my euphoria (I know, a big word for me), and return to my place in the sports caste system. When we begin to dominate the SEC West, Play in Atlanta, and are mentioned in BCS rankings conversations in late Novermber each year, I will try not to be too haughty (another large word) and will be gracious and thankful for the opportunity to be thought of by the ESPN personalities, let alone be complimented. I fell better now, sort of. At leat I can still look forward to an encouraging word from Kirk Herbstreit.

Perhaps I should have qualified certain elements of my post as satire. I generally don't because it seems a bit condescending to assume that readers on this forum can't discern it from the more serious remarks.

I was pointing out the hypocrisy of these "supposedly morally superior" groups in South Florida and ESPN in how they allow their cultural bigotry to affect their opinions regarding sports issues. I don't believe that they care how much Nick Saban is making nor do I believe that they are really that offended that he misled them. The REAL issue is that they are offended that he CHOSE Alabama over Miami, implying that there is some criteria by which Alabama is superior to this great, multicultural mecca of sun, fun and international glamour. That is anathema to their belief that there is NOTHING good about Alabama and that only people with serious educational, intelligence or moral deficiencies would choose to be here. After their self-righteous mockery about Alabama's overtures to Saban, they set themselves up basically implying that he was "too good" for Alabama. Then, when he changed his mind, they are left with two possibilities:

1.) Alabama has some qualities that make it more desirable than Miami to some good people.

2.) Nick Saban must be morally deficient... a mercenary coach with no scruples.

Their superiority complex and hubris will NOT allow them to believe the first conclusion, so it has to be the second.

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

Do you have some inside info on Applewhite's coaching ability to share? Or are you just hating on him for his performance at Texas?

Well, let's review.

He's 27 and the youngest OC in division I. His team went 6-7 in '06. Lost in a bowl game to Troy, 41-17! Was outscored for the season, 350 to 432. Had approximately 400 total yards more than the dismal CMS.

With a pile of cash, one would think we could do better (and get more experience). Why take a chance when we can get proven experience?

There are at least three other guys that some believe are solid right now but yet have not been released to the public... and I'm not quite ready to say all of them are a done deal (although might be very close). Obviously, CNS has hit a few snags with a few people... Searels reportedly is being courted by UGA and Fisher by FSU. Possibly, these guys were closer to being "locks" in Saban's mind when he first contacted them about the possibility... but now, things have changed a bit. Other than that, he's probably further along than most would think at this point.

Regarding recruiting, remember that his priority is first to get a quality staff in place and THEN recruit. Right now, without an OC in place, no offensive guys will likely make a commitment. Thus, right now, the current staff is most likely establishing contact with recruits... assuring them of their interest and telling them the right people will be hired. Also, probably trying to convince them to come in for an official starting next week.

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

I don't mind if Saban takes a while to get his staff.

In his hiring, we see that it is better to be patient and be relentless in getting the right people.

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

I have no problem with anyone Saint Nick hires as an assistant coach. If he hires Big Bird to coach the O-line and Elmer Fudd to coach the special teams, that is fine by me. I trust his decisions completely, and that gives me great comfort.

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

Folks, lets not forget that Coach Saban said he was not going to just go out and rush these hires. He said he was going to do the due diligence to bring in the best staff he possibly can. We all need to be patient and trust Coach Saban's ability to get a great coaching staff.

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

Unfortunately, it looks like Jimbo is out.

Haven't heard that consistently just yet... a few credible posters on other sites are saying it, but it's far from being confirmed. FWIW, the name Jason Garrett is starting to make some waves in web circles today.

I think some people don't realize that Rice went to a bowl game this year for the first time in about 35 years. From what I hear, Applewhite is a very good offensive mind, and he also grew up a big Bama fan I think.

Remember that only 6 or so coaches are allowed to recruit off campus, so it won't kill us if 2-3 of coaching spots aren't immediately filled.

Also, we're on probation until Feb 1st or so, so coaching hires have to be cleared thru the NCAA before we can make them official. I doubt the NCAA has staff available to clear them on Friday nights and weekends.

Re: CONFIRMED Assistant Coaches: Steele, Thompson

... Smart, too, is probably over-qualified for this job if anything. An NFL position coach don't normally come to take a college position coach job.
... first of all, Smart coached at LSU under Saban before serving under him in miami - i am sure he knows the drill

... secondly, as for NFL position coaches to college position coach jobs - we just saw a NFL head coach leave to be a college head coach - so why not?

... thirdly, you are right, that doesn't "normally" happen, but, thank goodness, we are not operating in "normal" at the moment

I know his brother and you are correct about his family being Bama fans. Of course he was named for his father's favorite Bama player...... Major Ogilvie.
