Weightroom Report

Akebono is a Hawaiian American, for those who don't know. Ah, a life of being forced to eat sushi all day long... :D

Discovery Channel: Sumo East and West
Rikishi Takamisugi, a Sumo champion, could drink 65 bowls of stew, which contained around 13 kilograms of beef. Konishiki, one of the heaviest rikishis in history at 285 kilograms, could eat 10 bowls of stew, eight bowls of rice, 130 pieces of sushi, and 25 portions of barbecued beef. And he still had room for desert!

That's what I was trying to get at as well. The BMI index will consider you "obese" if you're out of it's "range" for your height regardless of whether or not it's muscle mass or just fat. That's why I said using it to judge athlete's overall body condition is very flawed at best. Something tells me that with this new staff in town we're not going to have to worry about whether or not our players are "obese" or not! :biggrin2:

The official BMI is crap. Under that standard Evander Hollyfield was Obese. AS does need to lose some body fat however. The exertion will not be good on his heart. 20-25 lbs fat loss will make a huge difference as long as he adds about 8-10 lbs of muscle

Yeah i am a little bit worried about our depth at a few positions (NG, LB). I'm worried not because we don't have players (numbers), and in some instances we don't, but if nothing else we have zero experience at the 2nd string level and for NGs at the 1st string level.

But this off-season S&C work, if it continues in this way, can do nothing but make the best come out of our players come to fruition and make each of our positions on the field stronger and more capable.

BTW this has been my favorite thread of the offseason. The "It must be the offseason" threads get on my nerves, especially when they are brought up only to make light of threads long past.

I also enjoy any threads about depth, position, schemes, coaches and players. Not to say other threads dont belong like what Les Miles says, but honestly I could care less.

Any updates about what's on tap for this week of strength and conditioning hell?

The sad part is, no matter how much effort we put into this off-season, we're playing catch up - most every other school we play is serious about the S&C program and one off season isn't going to catch us up. It may be 2-3 years before our lines are performing like they should.

Not an excuse, I expect us to compete every week. But is does show how Shula's reign will weigh on us for some time. Thanks Shula!

I wouldn't think it will take that long. The way they're being worked I wouldn't be surprised to see them blowing people off the ball this year. The Stamina may take a little longer, but the oomph needed to get off the ball and move the line in our favor should come about rather quickly, I'd think. Someone said on here that the ones that got too used to the optional crap won't make it to the roster by fall, and the ones who get serious should be young enough to make really fast gains in strength, and steady gains in endurance. JMO of course, but I'm sure ready to see some of the results on the field, even just the spring training.

I've never been to an A-Day game, but I'm seriously considering checking this one out with another fan :BigA: tic I work with.

If you've ever weight lifted seriously, you'd know that it takes time. You don't think that many other SEC schools are working the kids as hard as Saban is?

Stamina will come quicker, but pure strength takes time - there are no shortcuts...

It does take time, but its not uncommon to see huge gains in a short time when somebody who doesn't work out often is suddenly thrown into a good S&C program, and we all know the players weren't having to work out very often ;)

Having been a powerlifter for the last 15 or so years, I have seen some amazing things concerning strength gains in short periods, especially with kids that are Seniors in high school and in their college years. The main thing the players got going for them now is their age. Their bodies are at the peak for producing testosterone so they can pack on the muscle if they do the right lifts and eat somewhat of a decent high protein diet. We should see marked improvement this fall and I wouldn't be shocked to see some of last years RS's making some moves into the depth chart since they were hitting it hard last Fall with Rocky.

I fully expect to see massive differences this fall from previous years. I just think it's a bit naive to expect one off-season to catch us up with teams that have been lifting hard every off season...

Two MAJOR aspects of our OL will change this offseason. Our OL will be on a real weight lifting program and will be made to stick to it. Our OL blocking strategy will be more aggressive and have a "knock you off the line" mentality.

Last season the major difference in touchdowns and fg's was about 10-12 inches. Due to lack of strength and passive blocking schemes we lost 10-12 inches on the LOS. Our line was either getting stoned and stood straight up at the point of attack or pushed back about a foot. On the goal line that is tremendous.

If we can't improve 10-12 inches then something is wrong. As another poster above has mentioned. These kids are at an age where they are growing and changing at a rapid rate. At the rate Saban has them lifting and to the degree he has them conditioning the improvement in the strength department should be evident this season.

We may not fully improve for awhile, but at least with the efforts being given by the OL right now (and assuming they continue), our RBs won't have to already be tackled by the time they get the ball from Wilson and maybe Wilson will be able to sit in the pocket a bit longer.

On that note a bit further can you imagine what kind of stars our backfield could look like having acclimated to a run for your life mentality and then actually line up behind a decent OL. If we can improve the OL to the point it should be then we could have some serious star potential.

With the right S&C system in place, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that by August, we can't be pretty much caught up with the rest of the SEC. You have to keep in mind that most players, especially your First and Second Teamers, tend to quit lifting heavy during the season. There's no way the human body can take the abuse of practice, game-day, and then lifting heavy. It isn't going to happen. Most players that start don't get over the soreness of gameday till Tuesday and that's if they aren't banged up, which by the middle of the season, everybody has something that hurts. The overwhelming majority just try to maintain during the season by getting into the gym maybe twice a week.

Therefore, every team really starts back from scratch in January. Some players will start hitting it hard again after the regular season ends in November but the Holidays and Bowl prep tend to get in the way, so like I said, pretty much all teams start back to lifting heavy about the same time. The good thing is that CRC started pushing for harder gym workouts even before Shula was fired. I heard there were some impressive gains being made by alot of the guys last Fall, so bottom line, we are going to be vastly improved in strength and endurance this season.

I just don't see a problem with these boys buffing it up pretty quickly on the regimen that Saban/Colburn has laid out for them. I played ball on the OL, and did do some serious lifting in my high school days. Of course I was dumb enough to think it was fun at the time, so I never had to get "back" into shape because I stayed in shape. Since then I've taken spurts of weights to "get back into shape" and that took longer because I couldn't make myself get serious without a group of teammates pushing me. Unfortunately, twenty-eight years and a blown disc at L4-L5 haved put an end to my hanging/banging days. I'm still in shape though (Round IS a shape, LOL).

Man I'm ready for Spring. RTR
