Weightroom Report

those people who are 300lb of muscle, that has to have some adverse health effects too, right?

regarding andre, i think the fattest people in the nfl are on the defensive side of the ball. more often than not, the big uglies on the o-line don't have guts hanging half a foot over their belts. i'd like to see andre trim up.

This may have been posted already. I heard( i know heresay) that Saban had all TV's removed from the weightroom. If so this is a good sign

Bottom pic - I bet it's a struggle for that guy to wipe his butt. Not trying to be funny, I'm serious. :p_sad:

The bottom pic would be 6 time Mr. Olympia, Ronnie Coleman. He is from my hometown of Monroe, LA (or Bastrop, for those that know the area). However he now resides in Arlington, TX. Yes, he carries about 300+ during the off season. For the O, he will come in around 280-290 and that is shredded. He is also only about 5'11" which makes him look almost that size in width.

I have seen him work out and he is one of the strongest bodybuilders in the sport. Alot of bodybuilders shy away from heavy weights but not Ronnie. He can bench close to 600, squat around 800, and his military presses and deadlifts are large. He does curls with 225 for reps. BTW, he is also pretty nimble and yes, he can wipe his butt.

Do they ever post how much these guys can lift? I know when CNS was at LSU they would publish how much each player could bench press, squat, and deadlift. That's some pretty cool info. The stength of some of these guys is amazing. There are 190 lb. recievers who can bench 400 lbs.!

I haven't heard any lift totals since way back when Fran was our coach and Ben Pollard ran the Night of Champions, which was a little competition that took place amongst the players to see who was strongest in the various lifts. The only way I get any info on how strong some of the players are now is via Coach Eyer, a trainer over in B'ham that trains quite a few current and former Bama players. He has a website that he updates from time to time.

I know LSU is on the cutting edge of player development in S&C. I have several buddies that are former players at LSU and they all said that Saban was super strict on workouts. Heck, even Dinardo cracked the whip on players getting into the gym.

It used to be, a school compared the overall strength of it's football players on how many guys were benching over 400. I wonder how many guys we got benching over that right now?

I think there is some confusion about BMI in this thread (or I am confused).

I think BMI is only a height-to-weight ratio, that doesn't take into account whether the weight is muscle mass or fat. BFP is Body Fat Percentage, which gives a percentage of fat to muscle mass (and organs/bone/etc).

FWIW, I think it takes a combination of both figures to tell where an athlete stands in terms of healthy weight.

That's what I was trying to get at as well. The BMI index will consider you "obese" if you're out of it's "range" for your height regardless of whether or not it's muscle mass or just fat. That's why I said using it to judge athlete's overall body condition is very flawed at best. Something tells me that with this new staff in town we're not going to have to worry about whether or not our players are "obese" or not! :biggrin2:

count me as one of the ones who agrees that AS could stand to drop some lbs. He's a man-child already, but with some motivation to drop some lbs and get stronger and quicker, he'd be an absolute machine. I think CNS will provide that motivation. Whatever it is that WE think we see in AS, you can bet that CNS sees it ten-fold, and CNS will get his way.

Probably a lot of speculation and concern over nothing because I seriously doubt if AS will be allowed to pull a Dante Ellington under Coach Saban. We'd have a legitimate concern if Shula and Connelly were still here. The hiring of Coach Saban is probably gonna be worth millions for Big Andre. :)

I agree, but Andre doesn't look like either of the men whose pictures you posted. Andre has an "excessive accumulation of fat". Just look at his pictures. And if he looked like that at 330, he must be a sight at 357.

Like I said, were he to get to a much leaner 320, he would be more effective. 330 lbs, but carrying around 50+ lbs of fat, might mean that he has more bulk for a defensive lineman to push around, but left tackles face the quickest defensive linemen. Therefore, they must be quick and agile to be effective. While Andre was very effective early in the season last year, his performance slipped quite a bit late in the season. Whether that was because he was out of shape, or because the SEC competition was simply better, the fact still remains that there is room for improvement.

He is no Chris Samuels - yet...

He is light years ahead of where Chris Samuels was at this point in his career.

:BigA:

Ahead, maybe - but I don't think so. Chris Samuels never allowed a sack at Alabama. Hmmm...

Did you see Andre's play during the last 3 or 4 games last season? Also, Chris got better each year and wound up the best offensive lineman in the country for his junior and senior seasons, winning the Outland Trophy his senior year. He was the 3rd overall pick in the 2000 NFL draft. In the NFL, he is a 4 time Pro-Bowler who signed a $47M, 7 year contract, with a signing bonus of $15M before the start of last season. This for an o-lineman. :eek2:

Andre has a long row to hoe before he even approaches Chris Samuels' accomplishments. Not saying that he can't do it, but you diminish the greatness of one of the best athletes ever to walk our sidelines with your off-hand comparisons...

Good info. While AS played very well as a freshman, that comparison is extremely unfair to what CS accomplished at Bama.

If anyone is interested, BMI is one way to determine whether or not an adult is overweight. BMI assesses height and weight; muscle mass is not a part of the equation. BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight (in kilograms) by his or her height (in meters, squared). BMI can also be calculated by multiplying weight (in pounds) by 705, then dividing by height (in inches) twice. A person with a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered to be at a healthy weight. A person with a BMI of 25-29.9 is considered to be overweight. A BMI over 30 is considered obese. A BMI of 40 or above indicates that a person is morbidly obese. This can increases a person's risk of death from any cause by 50%-150%. For what ever it's worth...

Did Chris Samuels play as a true freshman? Honest question.......I really don't know. If he did not, then comparisons would be moot, at this point. Like I've mentioned before, I think AS is a much more fluid athlete than Chris was, but only time will tell if AS will be as good.

By those calculations, someone could have near 0% body fat and still be considered "obese." The BMI doesn't account well for muscular athletes.
