Alabama made a dramatic coaching upgrade in the offseason by replacing Mike Shula with Nick Saban. However, it could take at least a couple of years for the former LSU coach to build the Tide into SEC title contenders. The arrival of Saban and the return of nine starters on offense should boost the Tide to an 8-5 finish with a victory in a second-tier bowl such as the Chick-fil-A or Music City. Consider this season a small step forward for a program that could make giant strides in the next few years.

BamainBoston, I think you are in for a rude awakening. I hope not, but 8-5 is probably gonna be pretty close to where we're gonna end up at. The ball takes funny bounces and with a bit of luck we might do better but I think 8-5 is realistic.

10 wins requires a great D, which we aren't likely to have this year. Our D will be respectable, but not like what we've seen over the last couple of years. Not this year.

I think nine wins is reasonable if things go our way. 10 wins would be an enormously successful season.

For sure, 10 wins will take a miracle on defense. Some older guys who've been moved around or were originally walkons will have to invent a whole new persona. OR, incoming frosh will have to come in and surprise. Not that it can't happen, but Saban has been at pains to try to get our fan base to think realistically about the process. From all the "ten wins or I'm disappointed" posts, I can tell he's not getting through...

It's certainly realistic, but when I look at the schedule, I'm still trying to figure out where those 5 losses are supposed to come from. The only team on the schedule that has significantly better talent than us is LSU, IMO. Talent-wise, I think we are close to or better than the other teams we play.

We may very well win more......or less. I just liked the way the article was written. It actually came off as a non-biased opinion based on the info the writer has about our squad.

A voice of sanity, thank goodness. Earle, I really think the majority of our fan base is realistic like you and I, but we definitely have a fringe group of fans that simply refuse to recognize that it is going to take Nick and his staff time to right the wrongs of the past four seasons.

I would not be surprised if Bama won 10 games (or more) this year. Most of the hard games are at home.....

Now, if Bama does not win 10 or more games this year, I will not be dispirited, Bama has a lack of experience on the D side.....

I know that Bama is in VERY good and capable hands.

I wouldn't be surprised if we end this season 9-4, but even if we end up 8-5, it will be an improvement over last season. I expect one thing from CNS and the Tide - Gradual improvement from game to game and from season to season. But I would REALLY LOVE to end this regular season with a victory over the barners, and to shut their collective mouth once and for all. ;)
BTW the one thing I don't EVER want to see again from the Tide sidelines: "DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS". That look should come from our opponent's sidelines! :p

10 wins this year means about three of them would have to be top ten all-time most memorable wins for the program.

We'll all be hugging each other an' smilin' and cryin'.

I don't think winning "ugly" (or losing that way, either) is in Nick Saban's repertoire.

Right this minute, I don't see any team we play being favored by double digits.

I do see us as the underdog in about 4 or 5 games.

2 or 3 years to become an SEC contender - You gotta be kidding.

5 loses yeah right - if it takes him 2-3 years to just become a contender in the SEC then we best gas up the plane. He is here to win the NC not contend for the SEC. He has five years like the previous coach to get it done otherwise we best put call in to Bob Stoops

I could coach 'em to 8 wins with this team, staff & schedule

Depth of talent is still a big issue with this team. The past two seasons, the offensive line was a weakness, this season the defensive line will be a liability.

I think a realistic goal for this season is to be playing better at the end than at the beginning. That was the frustrating part about Shula-coached teams...Bama seemed to start a new season every Saturday with no discernable progress or "carry-over" from week to week.

Prince Hall is a stud on the D, Simeon Castille is a talent, however, that's as far as I can go individually. It all depends on the coaching now to bring out the latent talent in the other guys.

Be patient Tidefans -- our time will come.

I agree on improvement from game to game but we did not hire this coach to simply be a contender for the SEC title in 2 or 3 years. That is Auburn expectations.

I thought five seasons would be good - He would have his recruits - no excuses totally Saban's team. If he can't get it done in five then how much longer do we do keep him around..?

I expect him to get it done with that time frame.

When is the honeymoon over...? When should we expect some serious NC contending. Does he have a free pass forever regardless..?

I expect to be seriously compteing for a National Championship within five years.

I like the coach but more concerned with winning than anything else

If I might quote the LSU poster "tigerland" my response to this is delsuional

The honeymoon will be over when or if he loses to a Northern Illinois or a LA Tech. It's bound to happen eventually because even his LSU team lost to UAB.

Seriously, I think pulling 10 wins out is a stretch. It's possible because we have the firepower on Offense to put up points and our schedule is favorable, but 9 would make me happy. I could live with 8 since we are breaking in a new staff and schemes and the September stretch is going to be difficult. 7 wins would raise some concern because Shula or Kines as Head Coach could win 7 with this team.

As for contending for a NC, I look at it in a slightly different way. I look at it by where we start off in the polls. First, if you start off outside the Top 10, your shot for even getting a sniff at the NC is tough. Plus, you aren't really considered a contender. However, being inside the Top 10 and playing in the SEC means your chances are good that if you win the conference games and the SEC is good that year, your chances are solid for getting in the NC game past the USC's and Ohio States. So, my expectaions are finish the 2007 season with a solid 8 or 9 wins and win the Cotton Bowl or Outback Bowl. Start next season in the Top 20 and hopefully get our 10 win season next year with a little more talent/depth on D and a Senior QB led Offense. Maybe, just maybe win the SEC next year. Finish in the Top 10 and start 2009 in the Top 10. Then, make the run. So, 3 years.
