Petrino to Arkansas

Re: Petrino to Arky? (Espn Confirmed)

As a Falcons fan, I have mixed emotions regarding Petrino leaving. In one hand, I'm a bit ticked at the abruptness of it all. This coming the day after he coached a monday night NFL game, also with 3 games left in the season..

On the other hand, if he wasn't happy in the NFL and wanted to be a college coach again.. then maybe it was best to go ahead and resign early. At least this way, the Falcons will get a head start on the coaching search and can hopefully land a quality coach with NFL experience. (crossing fingers for Cowher :) )

As far as Deangelo Hall's comments go.. I don't agree with everything he said, but I can relate with the way he's feeling. Mostly, I'm curious if those comments will have any effect on Petrino in the future w/recruiting..

Petrino apparently never had the respect or tried to get the respect of the Falcons players. He'd go days without talking to them. Joey Harrington had no clue he had lost the starting job until the Falcons beat reporter asked him a question about it. The Falcons spent big money on the fullback from the Ravens and Petrino promised he would be involved in the offense with catching and running the ball but he never saw any touches.

This was a disaster from the word go and Blank should use this opportunity to clean house starting with the GM, Rich McKay.

Good luck to the Hogs. They're going to need it. They're going to lose all the offensive weapons they had on offense and most of their defense for Petrino's first year. Hope he doesn't quit midway through the season on them either.

Re: What kind of talent will Petrino be able to bring to Ar-Kansas?

My personal thought is the NCAA will be opening a branch office on campus within the next four years.

Bayou,
Has he ever been nailed or has it been speculation about his recruiting improprieties.
I too have heard about how scummy he is but I was just wondering where the recruting stories stem from.

Re: What kind of talent will Petrino be able to bring to Ar-Kansas?

I believe he will be able to get very good talent there. Louisville was on ESPN all the time and his offense was very exciting for many to watch. He will be able to get the offensive players for certain. And if they pick up the defensive coordinator from Ga Tech, Jon Tenuta, then he will be able to pick up some good defensive talent. Do you really think Cody Burns and Ziemba would have left Arkansas if this would have happened last year? With scholarship limitations and the number of kids available these days, every good coach is going to be able to fill their rosters with good to great talent.

Re: What kind of talent will Petrino be able to bring to Ar-Kansas?

at first this was the last guy that i wanted to join the sec coaching ranks, then I remembered that we already had trouble enough with arkansas. so meet the same boss, same as the old boss, except replace the strong running with some strong throwing once he gets QB he needs. it'll take a little bit of time before he gets going out there. also, did ya'll see what de'angelo hall said about arkansas? he said, "they're not even a good sec." hahahahahaha. i liked watching houston nutt on the sidelines because he was so bizare. i still think that of all the coaching searches this year and last, we came out on top no matter what anyone says.

Re: Petrino to Arky? (Espn Confirmed)

LOL. The names being thrown out now are Bill Cowher, Marty Shottenheimer, Ray Rhodes and Mike Martz. Some want Jim Foxx if he is forced out at Carolina and some are mentioning Mike Singletary.

I wouldn't mind Gruden if he leaves Tampa. He and Atlanta's GM work well together.
Dude, Gruden is the reason you have McKay in Atlanta now. They pretty much hate each other.

And Gruden isn't going anywhere anytime soon. He will probably get an extension after this year, probably his best coaching job in Tampa to date.

What's funny is that the Tennessee fans seem to be taking the Petrino news the hardest. Reading the UT boards is hilarious. Once faction of their fan base has been saying that they can't get a great coach, or a better coach than Fulmer, because they don't have a great recruiting base at UT. Now, Arkansas goes out and reels in Petrino, and the UT fanbase is screaming that if Arkansas can get a top coach, why can't they? There is an internal meltdown going on at UT about Fulmer. It probably hasn't reached a boiling point yet, but if Fulmer even has one slip up, it's going to start getting ugly up there.

Watching the PC last night i kept waiting for a forked tongue to shoot out of Bobbys mouth. How can any parent and recruit believe anything that comes out of his mouth?
I give arkie credit they got a good coach but the man has the morals and backbone of Fran.

Re: Petrino to Arky? (Espn Confirmed)

Bobby Petrino has FOUR years as a college head coach. FOUR!
Two years playing in a sorry Conference USA, and two in the Big East with the benefit of a great quarterback. He is the next Dennis Franchione. Big hit in little leagues, but a flop in big boy town. Somehow, he's conisdered a genius and the best thing since beer and chicken wings.

Jeff Shultz of the AJC said Bobby Petrino makes Nick Saban look like a martyr because he at least stayed two full seasons.

GOOD points!

Re: Petrino to Arky? (Espn Confirmed)

Kids won't want to play for him. He may recruit some great ones but down deep, his players won't trust him.......

R U serious? These are the EXACT same words spoken by our rival fans when Saban came to Tuscaloosa. "Recruits won't trust him to keep his word" was the catch phrase on every rival sight and out of some of the goobs at espn as well. They only didn't trust him enough to give him a top ten class in 4 weeks of recruiting last year, and what looks like a top three class this year. Sorry, but the trust mantra doesn't ring true to me. I think Petrino's hiring surprised everyone; (at least all the ones who were laughing and predicting a total meltdown because no GOOD coach would ever want the Arky job for this or that reason. [Hmmm, that sounds familiar too, doesn't it?]), including the Arkansas fans. I also think Arkansas just turned the corner to legitimacy as a yearly contender in the very near future.

Roll Tide
Saban Rules!!

The "pig calling" thing is the most embarrassing thing I've ever seen. If you are CBP you are on T.V. Monday night coaching in the NFL and the next night you are in ARK. calling for pigs??? Someone said Nutt did it when he was hired, but CBP not being an Arky man, that had to have been the most embarrassing thing he's ever done in public.

BTW, if Alabama would have allowed fans to come to CNS presser, it would have had to have been in BDS and 100,000+ would have attended.

I agree. Alot of people are jumping on the "hammer Petrino" bandwagon. We have to remember that the media treated Saban this way last year and we were the ones defending our coach. Now, Arkansas is taking the heat and I don't feel like Alabama fans should join in on this bash Petrino bandwagon. First of all, Arkansas fans have to be excited about this hire and they are going to defend Petrino, which they should since he is their coach. Secondly, the media is only out for ratings and they just love stuff like this. It gives them a reason to get people stired up. If Arkansas fans are happy with Petrino, then it really doesn't matter whether other people are happy with it or not, just like it didn't really matter last year when the media was all over Saban.

maybe the had the press conference last night so as not to give the ATL media a chance to invade...remember the miami media at the Saban press conference? maybe they wanted to avoid that if possible!

and i must say, Saban's press conference was much more impressive, informative, and he said so much more (and i don't mean just in length)...

and of course Ark people will defend them, as they should...but Saban took a lot of heat for staying and finishing the season with the Dolphins, if he had done what Petrino did he wouldn't of had to say what he said at that legendary press conference - would he of got attacked as hard, well probably.....so which was the better way to handle it? Absolutely completely quit on your team in the middle of the season - or lie to the media (how dare he!?) and stay with YOUR team the rest of the season and get slammed by the media later. Something tells me Saban cares more about his team, than the media...

personally i think leaving your team in the middle of the season after telling them the night before you'll see them at practice wednesday - i think that is pretty low.

How would you feel if you are an assistant coach for Bobby? These guys have familys, kids in school, kids playing sports. You move from Louisville to Atlanta hoping to stay a few years and he walks into a meeting and says..."I have resigned , I'm leaving". Then he walks out. He has a brother Paul who has been with him forever, but he also has to be thinkin, "what do I tell my family?"

If he asks a coach to come to the hogpen, what enters into this guy mind?

There were at least two coaches who remained with the Cards, but one was just let go, the other Jeff Brohm was promoted to OC and might be the HC at the Ville someday.

I agree as well. I think a lot of us were even joining in the game of saying that there was no way arkansas would hire a quality coach since so many had turned them down. I felt the same way about us just last year before we hired saban. I think for Arkansas this is a great hire and i think he will recruit well and make Arkansas stronger.
