Most often people, especially men, ignore symptoms until it's too late. Trust me, you will survive the exam and you don't have anything the doctor or nurses haven't seen before.

The colonoscopy itself is a huge nothingburger. You’re asleep so you don’t feel a thing. The bad part is the prep and having to live on the toilet for a night. It’s worth it for the peace of mind.

Amen to that last sentence.

I've had 4 or 5, and even the prep isn't as bad as it was when I first started. For the last one, my doc prescribed SuPrep. I was disappointed because he'd done so for a previous procedure and it tasted horrible. Had to drink a large volume and it was all I could do to gag it down and suppress the vomit reflex.

This time, though, the volume was less and the taste wasn't so bad. Still not something I'd drink voluntarily, but not nearly as awful as the previous time.

One nice point is the sedation. My doc uses propofol, and it's the best sleep of my life.

Yeah, the first one is mildly embarrassing. But you get used to it and come to realize that you've built it up in your mind to be something far, far worse than it really is.

I have a tendency toward polyps, so I have a colonoscopy every 3-5 years. I have no doubt that if not for the procedure, I'd be a cancer statistic.

If you love your family and living life, just do it.

A friend of mine almost did this his first time and decided to do the Colonscopy. The Doctor told him afterwards "Congratulations, you saved your life!"

IMHO, the Home Box Kits should be banned altogether...

Just got my 5-year renewal schedule for August.

My very 1st one (when I turned 50), they found several polyps. I went thru a divorce about the time of my 5 year requirement, and life sent me in different directions.

I didn't get my 2nd one until I was 60. I was a little scared of what they would find. Fortunately, a clean bill of health, no polyps.

I hope for the same this time around. My paternal grandfather died of colon cancer back in the 60s. But I'm sure his diet was high in a lot of bad things, and he was a smoker(rolled his own, as I remember).

The prep improved when I did my last one. My first one, it was a marathon of drinking that awful stuff. I chugged the last bit because, if I didn't, I was going to have to stay up really late. It was chilled.....I got so cold that I had to sit in a hot bath tub to warm up.

Unfortunately I see advertisements now for a blood test which is even less accurate than the stool test.

We're probably going to see it more and more among that generation. Fast food, crappy diets, vaping, obesity, inactivity, increased tobacco use in general.

My 18 yr old, love her to death, but she's in that YOLO mentality. Luckily, I quit smoking when I was in my mid-20s after seeing all of my parents' friends die young from smoking.

The box is also not particularly good at detecting polyps, which can be precursors to cancer.

Just get the colonoscopy. It's really not that bad.
