I understand it and it’s tiring to hear people say “if you only understand it”. It still doesn’t do anything for me. It’s boring as all get out. The US Open on the other hand…

Not my household, Bazza. We've tried to like professional soccer and we just can't get into it.There's a thread in PRO sports, but only has 13 posts in this entire year!
So I thought it would be OK to start one here in the football thread. I mean...it is "foot" ball, right?
The USA Team is looking pretty good, so let's cheer them on!
Yesterday in Seattle, we defeated Australia 2-0 without our best player, out with a thigh injury.
Seattle understood the assignment.
One of my traditions is to fall asleep every Sunday afternoon to whatever golf tournament is on. I love playing golf, and I used to be glued to the TV when Tiger was playing, but none of these current "stars" do anything for me. The only tournament that doesn't put me to sleep is the Masters.
I have been watching a ton of the World Cup, giving it my best shot, and learning the sport. Slowly, I think I am catching on, and I find the matches more enjoyable as I watch more. Slowly starting to pick up on some of the strategies. Really sad to watch my Hobbits (New Zealand) blow it last night.
I have already decided to give MLS a real shot when they resume the season. I have decided to follow 3 teams, Nashville and Atlanta, because they are the closest to me, and Orlando, because I lived there for 9 years.
I think there's enough crossover fans for Soccer to "work" in the U.S. Granted, I think it still generations away from becoming in the USA what it is globally. But I think it has enough demand in the U.S. that it'll work. I mean, we've got the UFL coming back for another year! LOL! Americans love their sports entertainment and just like the WNBA, all it takes is ONE player coming along who connects with millions of fans who previously never would turn on the sport.

Again, certainly understand those who do not care for soccer. I am not a golf person. I am not a basketball person. Just don't care for them. Rather watch paint dry in the words of @DzynKingRTR. Diversity of thought is what makes life so interesting.
The only things the MLB, NASCAR, and Golf on TV are good for are afternoon naps...

Soccer is one of the most action-packed sports in the world, despite the lack of scoring. In a way, the difficulty of scoring makes the game more exciting than sports with a lot of scoring - even the NFL. Every scoring opportunity is significant with possibly monumental repercussions.
Imagine, in American football, if an interception either resulted in a pick-six or the other team getting the ball back at midfield - and it happened dozens of times a game. That's the type of action that soccer has.
Of course, I've always thought the 'Soccer is boring!' crowd sounded a lot like the crowd that brags about having never seen Star Wars...

Nothing subjective about it...you cover your mouth, you get a red card.
It's really quite a simple rule, and really really simple to follow.
Probably similar but bigger because of how big soccer is.
Yeah, just cannot do it. I think mostly because ties are acceptable in the sport.
It's not the ties that bother me. I just can't get into the design of the game. It's just not for me. But I do have a lot of friends who enjoy it, so at least they can enjoy all the world cup events going on right now in the U.S.

Thing is, it is an incredibly simple game yet the skills to execute some of the ball touches we see from the best players in the world is just breathtaking at times. One can only appreciate that after logging hours of viewership (and kicking the ball around yourself). Games last only 90 minutes instead of multiple hours and the game gives us truly players from all over the world. To have Richards represent Alabama and the US is simply incredible to me.
With me it isn't just the ties, that is part of it, but I just find it boring. I am the same way with hockey.
Frankly, that leads to one of the best parts of the sport...the relegation rule. The point system of 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 points for a loss in the season means if your team is one of the three teams at the bottom of the standings at the end of the season then you get relegated to the second division. If it happens the next year then you get relegated to the third division, and so on. Wish we had it in college football.
