Meta - again...

Today (or rolling out later), Meta decided to make images of you on Instagram free for anyone to use and AI manipulate. Don't ask me why. Their explanation makes no sense. Opting out is not easy. Log into Instagram, go down to "profile" and look for "share and use," or something similar and toggle it to off - three toggle, IIRC. You are correct in thinking that it is the perfect avenue for ID theft...

To opt out, click your profile -> 3 bars in the top right -> scroll down to "Sharing and reuse" and toggle off for both Posts and for Reels.

Just curious -- can they do that if you don't have, and have never had, an account on any Meta platform?

You'd think not, but I've had multiple instances where pictures of me and Mrs. Basket Case were taken by others and posted on their accounts. When Meta's facial recognition algorithm recognized us, it suggested the pictures to others who had also posted pictures of us in the past.....even though we were not named in any of the posts and we ourselves don't have an account and never have.

Meta's going to get slammed on this. Somebody's going to get their ID stolen and harm themselves or someone else over the theft.

What do you think the over / under on time before the PI lawers' TV ads blare, "Have you or someone you love been hurt by ID theft aided by Meta -- call today!"

I'll give it two weeks.

The contentious book "Careless People" by Sarah Wynn Williams is a fascinating read if you can get a copy. Meta has sued her relentlessly and tried to have the book pulled since she blatantly violated the NDA she had signed, but given Meta's actions on numerous occasions, I have no doubt the story she tells is pretty close to the truth of what happened when she was there and continue to happens at Meta.

Actually, just checked and Amazon has it listed currently.

It's one of the reasons why we've never posted pitcures of our kids on social media - while my face is in the wild due to various press things, I've always felt my kids should have the right to decide if / when they want to release their own images to the social media companies. Parents who post pictures of their kids are disallowing their children the right to decide if their faces become part of said database.

sadly, with the ubiquity of flock and other surveillance cameras, i don't think they (or we) are going to have much of a choice

Agreed, though with META we're talking about a private entity's database that will be used 100% for profit (engagement).
