Weather thread, Part III

Well, Beaufort, SC, almost did me in back in mid June. Heat index of well over 100, grandparents seated first in an outdoor wedding foulup, which left me sitting out in a hot dry wind for 1.5 hours. I spent the night in the ER with heat exhaustion and dehydration...
It's hotter there than it is down in central FL. Crazy.

No, I mean I had just checked, it is currently.

FL is FL; it gets hot but rarely do we get a heat index much above 100* - we had those all the time in Memphis.

For south Florida

Typical Summer Heat Index Ranges

  • Mid-summer (July–August):
  • Daily pattern:
    • Heat index often peaks in the late afternoon (around 4–6 PM) when sun exposure adds another 10–15 °F to the reading National Weather ServiceNational Weather Service+1.
    • Early morning and late evening can be cooler, but humidity remains high, so heat index can still be elevated.

Historical and Climatological Context

  • Miami-Dade County: In the 1991–2020 period, Miami’s heat index often exceeds 100 °F for 40–50+ days annually, with 105 °F+ occurring about 10–15 days per year bmcnoldy.earth.miami.edubmcnoldy.earth.miami.edu.
  • Fort Myers area: Similar patterns, with 100 °F+ days averaging 30–40 per year and 105 °F+ about 2–3 days annually Florida Climate CenterFlorida Climate Center.
  • Long-term trend: Over the past century, average maximum heat index values in South Florida have risen, with more days above 100 °F and higher peak values

This is at Sams Club (5K and 6K BTU). They had a similar display at Walmart on Wed. but I think the price was $10 more and it was only the 5K in their display. It was right in the front where you walk in...lol....great marketing! :)

Midea is a good brand and I was tempted but I decided I'm good to go for now.

AC units are still VERY reasonable and there's no reason anyone should be suffering inside their homes.

I guess I should have been more specific - south FL is always a good bit hotter than central FL (where I am).

For kicks and giggles I track temps from when I lived here in the 80's vs today. Not a huge difference (I tracked this all last summer and so far this summer):
Highs on July 10 for my zip code:
1986: 92
1987: 97
1988: 93
1999: 97
1990: 94
Five year avg: 94.6
yesterday: 94

That's what I've seen over and over since I moved back here.

I'm sure there are loads of doom-and-gloom articles there to tickle your fancy, but temps here are only slightly higher (maybe) than averages 40 years ago. And strangely, despite the doom-and-gloom articles, banks are still giving 30 year loans for beach-front property.

The mountain is by far the best in town.

Opted for the short SRC course which is flat and shaded. And more tolerant

Nice! We are down in the valley for school...But if I move again...
We live next to the park (and trees) and are in the middle of 3 acres of trees. In summer, a ten degree delta is usual. Liz says she's seen 15F difference. It's worth it...

Yep... And I do love that Delta! Have ridden comfortably many times when it is 95 in the swamplands!

The nice modulating effect of the ocean.
When we moved back last year lots of people asked us how we liked the heat down here, not realizing it gets hotter in Memphis than it does down here. Just doesn't stay hot as long. The water really does keep things in check overall. Generally gives a nice breeze all day as well.
