Re: 2007 invited walkons?

How soon we forget, that Matt Collins is a walk on.Bama has had some very good walk ons. We had a WR from Memphis Tn named Bolden that played on the 78-79 NC teams that was a WO. also,we had a few others too. I wish them all Good Luck,b/c it's very hard to get off the scout team when your a WO.

My favorite walk on was Willis Bevelle, a close friend and just an all around great guy. He had dreamed of playing at Alabama all of his life and was determined to play for Bama. Well, our coach did nothing to help him and Willis and I ended up joining the Navy out of high school. People told him that he was crazy if he thought that he could make it at Alabama after being out of football for four years. Well, Willis trained everyday to keep himself in football shape and after four years of the Navy walked on to Alabama. He ended up earning a scholarship and in his senior year won the national title by beating Miami. He was a favorite of Coach Stallings and was one of Coach Stallings leaders. He won the Most improved D-back in 1989, The Jerry Duncan "I like to Practice Award, and the Charlie Compton Award while at Alabama. He also made a play that saved our 1992 Championship hopes when he recovered a fumble in the 4th against Missippi State.

Re: 2007 invited walkons?

Kicker Mark Prevost, Walker High School, Jasper, AL has been invited to walk on at Alabama. He grew up a Bama fan. He had been waiting for word from the Tide, if they would invite him to walk on. On Feb. 19 coach Ron Middleton called him and talked to him for around 45 minutes. Middleton said they went through 75 tapes of kickers and they were only going to recruit one kicker to walk on. He said they wanted Prevost to be that kicker. Prevost had scholarship offers from Western Michigan, Air Force and Florida International. Other teams interested in him were Southern Miss, Southern Illinois and Samford. Prevost was ready to sign with Western Michigan, but his letter-of-intent was delayed in getting to him, by 4 days. It was to have arrived Feb. 16, but arrived Feb. 20. But it arrived 1 day to late. Prevost thought about his decision for 48 hours. He decided to go with his dream of kicking for the Tide. So he gave up his full scholarship to W. Michigan.
Prevost is 5 foot 10 inches and 160 pounds. He was All-State as a kicker and punter. Last year he was 7 for 7 on his field goals and 15 for 15 on his extra point tries. In 2005 he was 5 of 7 on FGs and 32 of 32 EPs. His longest FG was a 47 yarder in 2005. His kickoffs were consistently out of the end zone.
He will do what Saban wants him to do, but he wants to be the place kicker. He will not be allowed to practice with the Tide until the first day of the fall semester at Alabama, due to NCAA regulations, as only scholarship players are allowed to practice prior to school starting.
Bama returns all it's kickers next year. Jamie Christensen is a senior and punter P.J. Fitsgerald is a sophmore. Leigh Tiffin will be a sophmore.

Re: 2007 invited walkons?

Walker High QB Tyler Wilson, of Jasper, Alabama, got a call from Coach Major Applewhite to walk on at Alabama this fall. He was going to sign with Division II West Liberty State University, in West Liberty, W. Va. A walk-on invitation to Alabama was to much to turn down. After Christmas, Wilson began sending tapes out to colleges trying for a walk-on invitation. Wilson visited practice at Alabama last Saturday and sat in on the QB's meetings and watched practice and met all the coaches. He has played various positions for Walker, but took over at QB in Walker's final 5 games, winning 3 of them. A move to WR is not out of the question. Coach Applewhite told him that they have a bunch of guys that can run and a bunch of guys that can throw, but they don't have many who can do both. Coach Applewhite wants to develop his arm. Wilson hopes to be one of the 20 walk-ons that report with the 85 varsity players this fall, as Bama is only allowed 20 walk-ons practicing, until fall classes start at Alabama. Tyler Wilson joins his Walker teammate K Mark Prevost as an invited walk-on at Alabama.

Re: 2007 invited walkons?

Does anyone know anything about a walk-on from here in NC by the name of Tyler King? He is a DE and played at one of the Montgomery County high schools.
This is a moderately sized kid for a DE. Weighs 245. Probably 6'3".
I met Tyler at our YMCA here in Albemarle. He has been working out for over a year in his plans to walk on at Alabama. He saw my gym bag with the Alabama logo and asked about my connection there. When I told him I used to teach there, he got very excited and told me of his plans.

Re: 2007 invited walkons?

Correct me if i"m worry RTO, but I beleive there is a difference between "invited walk-ons" and "recruited walk-ons". If the wlk-on has been "recruited" by the staff, he cannot play in a game for his 1st two years. He can practice, work out, etc.; but he can't play in a game.

So my question about Dejohn, is he considered a "recruited" walk-on?

I believe you're talking about a Bryant Scholarship player. There are no such restrictions on a walk-on.

If he could kick it through under the new rules, it would be a huge advantage for sure.
