Game Thread: 2012 NFL Draft Thread

The one thing that that the Merciless/Keuchlys of this world is that they are good footballers who play on mediocre teams so they easily outshine their teammates. A Defense with Dre, Dont'a, Mark Barron and Courtney U are outstanding players playing on an outstanding defense. As such, they do not show how great they are when compared to the other players on the team including those who will be 1st rounders in the coming years. I hope Courtney just tears up the NFL and make a lot of teams regret not taking him.

excellent point that is often overlooked!!

Can't believe the Cowboys didn't take Mark Barron.....wow..

Gruden basically downplay Claiborne to Cowboys. he had more negatives in his analysis than positives.

but when Barron was selected, both he and Kiper lit up and couldn't stop talking about what a great player MB was.

I thought to myself, Cowboys must have "buyer's remorse" after the Gruden comments.

Some scouts and draft analysts were using this against some of our guys. I didn't understand that mentality, but they will nitpick any angle they can with hours of draft coverage leading up to the event.

On another board, people were calling Kirkpatrick a zone corner. I figure it was because all they heard about him was how he was very physical and he didn't have many interceptions in his stat sheet. Obviously, these people rarely watched Alabama play because the way we used our corners in the national championship game was the exception not the rule. Whenever we play Arkansas and that national title game were really the only time I remember extensive use of the corners as flats defenders. Kirkpatrick spent his whole career basically playing on an island in straight man or some form of pattern match zone not "area zone" like people typically think when you say zone defense.

Kirkpatrick suffered because people wouldn't throw his way very often and when they did he was usually playing to allow the throw then try to tackle or knock the ball loose. Because he wasn't in zone very much, he didn't get those interception cherry pickings that guys like Mo Claiborne gets within the LSU scheme which mixes in more area zone coverage with their corners than Alabama.

Everybody thinks they're an expert this time of the year.

To me Jeffrey = Maze with 6 more inches and 5 stars out of High School.

No way man... Jeffrey is one of the most gifted wide receivers to come through the SEC in years. I think he has more natural receiver ability than Julio (julio is obviously a better athlete and player due to work ethic but not as natural). He's lazy. period. Marquise Maze is the furthest thing from naturally gifted and lazy. Polar opposite players IMO.

According to some of you guys, a good draft pick is only a guy that played in the SEC. You guys need to start reading and watching more pre-draft coverage.

How 'bout post-draft coverage? Some know-it-all, at FoxSports, had this to say:

A lot of teams were concerned about Mercilus, and two GMs told me Thursday that he’s the most overrated player in the first round.

Time will tell.

As for most likely bust, it has to be Tannehill. If for no other reason than the Dolphins are a joke, as of late. Why should they reverse trend now?

I buy that to a point, but Mclain had a whole bunch of tackles on a darn good defense.

times are a changing. when was the last time FSU, Florida, nor Miami had a 1st round pick? wow

Yeah, that was pretty surprising. Also I don't remember seeing Ohio St, OU or Texas with a first rounder either. You know times have changed when Baylor and Boise St have two 1st rounders each and no Florida school has anyone in the 1st.

It may sound cheesy, but I do hope that all our guys manage to avoid all the trappings of wealth. Moreover, I hope the team environment they're in is good and not detrimental to their development.

I feel bad that Upshaw didn't get to go on the stage like his other teammates at New York but he'll be better for it.
Unless he left the city, he'll be able to go on stage tonight.

The coverage I saw that discussed Mercilus said he was probably a one year wonder type guy. My point was guys on here last night acted like he was some no name guy, but I knew he was from watching pre-draft coverage. Whether or not the coverage on him was good, I saw the coverage, and some posters last night would have known who he was/is if they did too.

My only concern is Dre because we know how he can stray without a heavy hand hovering above his head. I'm not that familiar with the Bengals system, so I can't comment on what "could be." I think the rest of them will be fine regardless of what team they play for. Obviously, Dont'a wins the award for best environment with the Pats and he will THRIVE there. If Courtney ends up with the Ravens, I think he will have a fantastic career and continue his giving spirit. I don't follow the Bucs, but Mark Barron is as level headed and humble as they come. As for Trent--he will be a leader on and off the field ANYWHERE. Coach Saban produces not only superb athletes, but excellent PEOPLE. I know they will all thrive on the field and off!!

P.S. I am still bitter and pi**ed that Courtney didn't go 1st round. I have no doubt he will prove wrong every team that passed on him in the first. RTR y'all!

It's Dre I'm worried about. Cincy has been quite antinomian.

Regarding McCoy and Weedon... Last night Gruden said he is waiting on the Big 12 QBs to show him something. He said you look at McCoy and Bradford and they haven't really impressed anyone. He said he wants to see more out of RG3 and Tannehill.
