2014 Prospects

jenk, I have been following your "debate" about Roc since it started and I, for one, agree with you 100%. It doesn't mean that you are second guessing Saban as some people want to imply. It just means that you hope we can continue to find a place for all of the "elite' talent from the state. There is nothing wrong with that process and I see perfectly where you are coming from.

Christian Miller has de-commited from Florida. He is now predicted 100% on 247Sports to switch to Alabama. This happened fast so I think it has validity.

If they ask him why he decommitted, I can guess he can just say, "the devil made me do it." :p_redeye: Now that would be a shot across the bow...

We maybe only taking one TB in this class considering the haul we had last year. If that is the case you obviously go after the best one you can get. Maybe right now we think LF is tops. So if this is the case, and I am understanding you correctly, that you would rather take the local kid, even though well regarded, for that one slot rather than the best player in the country who happens to play the same position and appears to have genuine interest in coming to Bama? If you say yes, then I am certainly glad you are not coaching our team.

Its amazing how the attitudes of fans change. Years ago we were disappointed that we werent competitive nationally in recruiting. Recently, we have had some success winning and that has opened up doors nationally in recruiting which has in turn made us the most dominant program in a lifetime. Now, we have this attitude that we ought to give the local kid a chance - maybe because we can afford to take a lesser rated player because he is from home.

Personally, I prefer we take the best available player regardless where he is from. The minute we stop doing that our run will surely be over.

That is not what I am saying. If Roc is as good as the ratings say you might have to pull the trigger on him while he still is available and if LF comes through then great. We might have to sign four or five db's instead of five or six. " A bird in hand" so to speak. I would not want to lose Roc and then have LF go to LSU and then we get neither. We lost a five star db last year because we waited until signing day on the db from South Panola and he went with Ole Miss. We are now in a position where we can get enough stud talent that we don't have to let these kids lead us on and then go else where at the last minute just to stoke their ego. There is no doubt that Roc can play at the next level. Let's get them both (not to mention Scarbrough).
You can never have too many RB's as we discovered a few years ago when a massive injury bug hit us.

I will just point out some facts about our offense from last year. Our starting RB, 3 OL's, and top 3 WR's were from out of state.

Had to get some zzz's guys currently in Afghanistan. But anyway, our leaders on the D (CJM) and O(AJ) hailed from the state of AL as well as the top CB (DM). So, the balance was there. Here's what I'm saying, if and when the best CB in the state decides to join our team we are taking him at anytime, agreed? But that hasn't stopped us from allowing other DB's to commit and they seem to be of a lesser evaluation according to all the recruiting services. So, if this fact is true, and it is, why not does this pattern hold true with an in state player with elite talent, who is a top 50 player in evaluations at this point and time? I know CNS and staff has done a great job, the iphone is a great cell phone too but loyal customers always question the latest version. And in other replies I say to my tide brother who just refuses to acknowledge the fact that USCe is a good football team, you really need to do your research, and this improvement that I speak of started with one group of players who decided to stay home and turn that school around and now its hard for any school to go in there and get any elite talent out of that state. And by slow playing Roc will this (the revolution to dethrone BAMA) happen over night, no, but the seed could be planted in the kids and coaches mind in the state of Alabama, that the University of Alabama does not value you or your talents as much as some other school. And for that point you can reference the ESPN 30 for 30 on Bo Jackson. So, all of you who want to condemn me for stating my question surrounding the recruitment of this player, as stated before I am on the other side of the world, so I have no other vested interest in this player. I still love you guys, no hard feelings, RTR. I am will continue to question variations that I see in the process, and the once in a generation player everyone so high on, isn't even the number one player in the country, now let that sink in...if this kid is head and shoulders above all other talent out there why is he not hands down the number one player in the nation?

For one, no one said USCe isn't s good football team. But strive to be like them, I do not. You are acknowledging what USCe built by keeping in-state players yet criticizing Saban's system that has built possibly the greatest era in Alabama football history. The argument IMO is flawed. I would love to have Roc, but I don't have 4 NC rings, I'll defer to coach on this one.

Perhaps it's an overall numbers issue. If Roc is our #2 RB and our #20 overall, and we have 20 slots this year, I'm going to guess that we'll go after our #1 RB even if we might miss. In such a situation, getting the #2 RB then takes away a slot not from LF (clearly a take regardless), but perhaps from our #3 OL. Since Roc can't exactly line up on the OL, we've then effectively lost a spot. I think I get both sides of the coin here, but this really isn't something worth taking up 3 pages of a thread. Jenk, I'm pretty convinced you are a passionate fan, and if this was 5 years ago, I'd probably be on your bandwagon. At the moment though, almost every high schooler in the state of Alabama wishes they could play for us, regardless of how we treat Roc. I am hopeful that we still sign him, because I think he's a heck of a player, but not because he's from Alabama. We're past the point where we risk alienating entire high schools due to our selectivity. Roc has plenty of right to be upset if Bama is "slow playing" him, but he's welcome to sign with *U any time if he wishes. But next year's top notch recruits from the state will not be using it as their sole determinant of where they choose to go.

I understand the point you are making. However, as someone else has already pointed out, if we get neither of them we are still in great shape at RB for the next few years. Any other school in CFB would gladly trade their RB group for ours.

Also, we don't know what the recruiting staff does. It may be that LF and RT have either or both indicated to us that we are in great shape to get them, but want to enjoy the recruiting experience. Saban is very much aware of what you indicated. THAT is why he is currently cruising the state in the Crimson Caravan.

There is no better recruiter in all of CFB and he will either get his man or have a solid backup plan. Either way, we are in absolutely awesome shape at the RB position.

I still shake my head that we were able to land four of the top ten RBs last year.

I said it earlier, but if Roc wants to play for Bama he should just be patient. It's very possible there might be room for him when things shake out.

He can probably sign with the Barn on signing day and they'd take him.

And no one said USCe was a team I wanted to emulate either, I referenced there raise of success which is only a few notches below what we have been able to achieve in the past 5 yrs....do your homework. And this success is directly attributed to the in state kids staying home. I for one don't think I can do a better job than anyone associated with the Alabama program, to include the lowest ranked water boy, but I can sit from the arm chair and question a decision. We all have done it, whether it was the play calling in Tam game or whether to pull a red shirt for two games, we all do it. How do the saying go about absolute power? Anyway have a fine Roll Tide day.

I do have one disagreement, ROC is absolutely worth spending three pages of debate because he is a good player and it's the offseason. What else is there to talk about? This will all shake out soon enough. I Hope to see him in this class and if he is patient he probably will be. If he gets his unders in a wad he will most likely be playing for AU and face years of torture from Bama's defense.

This^^^ or wind up transferring to another school. Patience is a virtue and I hope the people close to Roc will point that out to him.

Those must me BIG notches we are talking about.

USCe has won the SEC East one time in the same amount time we have won 3 NC's. Yep just a few notches. I'm not sure what you want me to research but very few programs can claim our kind of success in the history of college football. It's not an indictment on South Carolina, just a testament to what the staff you are questioning has accomplished.

Roll Tide to you my friend. I'm happy with the program the way it is. If Roc really wants Bama and IF Bama wants him then he'll wait. If not we'll be fine and so will he.

By the way, anyone worried about if we get the elite talent in this state or not...

2 of our more recent commits grew up rooting for Auburn and were fans of the Tigers. Let that sink in for a sec.

OK, now that it has hopefully sunk in, let this sink in:

WE STILL GET WHO WE WANT (ELITE) IN-STATE.

Ah, that's better. And by the way, they were quoted as saying things like they wanted to play for a champ, and they wanted to be SURE they were prepared for the NFL, etc.

Just wanted to throw that out there. Have we lost a couple recruiting battles the last couple years? Maybe, but there are some well-documented bullets that I'm glad we missed, others that messed up and are out the door, and still others where we simply got the better player when some thought we "lost out" on on in-state guy.

Bottom line, I'm not worried about it.

RTR to all, and to all a good night.

We are "behind" in recruiting again. I wonder how this next flurry of recruits comes. We gotta win the state though.

We've got six quality additions to date, and several more in the pipeline should we want them. For mid-May, some nine months until NSD and before the flurry of summer camp activity, I fail to see how that constitutes being "behind" in recruiting.
