2016 Season QB Thread

Re: 2016 Season QB Thread (Moved QB Posts from Practice Thread)

Let's not forget who was catching those long balls. Cooper made Sims look better than he was.

Sims didn't just throw to Cooper, and when he did he was hitting him in stride. Sims had some shortcomings, but his deep ball was his best attribute in my opinion, and he showed it throwing to multiple receivers.

I don't think this is fair to Blake. Cooper was phenomenal, but Sim's deep passes were often perfect. Coop didn't even have to adjust his stride a lot of the time. The long ball Sims threw to White against Mizzou was one of the most beautiful passes I've ever seen.

McElroy had Julio, AJ had Coop, Coker had Ridley. Lets give BS some credit.

Here's taste of some vintage Blake Sims for people to examine his deep ball skills. Even in such a short period of time I had forgotten just how electric this kid was. Will always be a fan favorite.

More to the point, he has some really nice deep balls in here. Whether Coop was wide open or not I think is being disingenuous to the integrity of Blake's throws. Often, when the read is made the receiver may have not even gotten out of his break yet or gained separation from his defender - so when Blake is throwing these balls, it's not with the 100% guarantee that Cooper or whoever will be all by themselves - as such, when the receiver catches a ball fairly in stride or at least in front of them, that speaks well of Blake's ability.

With all due respect.. I'm not sure if that's what Kiffin would do... Kiffin is good at working around a QB's weakness.

How many times has Kiffin thrown his hands up in celebration of a touchdown thrown on a fifteen yard square in route? Our offense needs to threaten every part of the field to be successful. It's that simple. You can't teach arm strength and without it you just load up the twenty yard box and any receiver who goes beyond that is one who doesn't necessarily have to be accounted for because the ball will float and the defense can recover. Flood the intermediate field and make the quarterback throw it perfectly into small windows. That also helps defend the running game as well.

You do realize he's throws his hands up in celebration because there's more open field, right? He sees the play will work because the defense is spread out. Pretty difficult to do that at the 15 yard line.

And yes, I know that's what you're trying to say, but it's also not really possible for him to do when you compare the circumstances.

But to answer your question, he did have his hands raised before this short touchdown against LSU in 2014.

If that is the case our offense will resemble the offense with JPW at the helm. Stack the box on D, force us to run block with the tight end and hope the receivers can get separation in a short field.

IIRC, everyone doubted Blake Sims' ability to throw downfield...

...until our first play in the Florida game.

As has been noted ad nauseum, CNS and CLK will pick the QB who gives us the best chance to win. Part of me would like to see Bateman or Barnett win the job and play well up until the Auburn game, at which point we start Jalen Hurts and proceed to hang a 100 on Aubie, running their own offense, complete with illegal forward passes.

Re: 2016 Season QB Thread (Moved QB Posts from Practice Thread)

CNS stated during spring football that Cooper Bateman would be the starter if the season started at that time because he had a better understanding of the system. At least that is my understanding of what he said.

Barnett spend a lot of time working with the QB guru George Whitfield during the time he spent at home during the break before summer school. My understanding is that he was working on mechanics and accuracy. If CNS was saying a better understanding of the system was where improvement was needed why wouldn't he have been studying the play book and game film. If I had been on campus at least a year I would make sure no one understood the system better than me.

I am by no means an expert so I would appreciate comments from those that more are knowledgeable and have more understanding than me.

Cooper had an opportunity to play in the games last year including Ole miss. so he gained invaluable experience from that. Any other quarterbacks on the roster may be talented, but doesn't have the experience or knowledge to run the offense the way it should. That's why its critical for Barnett, Cornwell, and Hurts to get some experience this fall on the field, whether It is as no. 2 or no.3 We know Barnett went home for a month and he worked on limiting his turnovers and making bad decisions. That was his issue. He threw too many interceptions in the spring camp. Cornwell was inconsistent. Hurt did some good things and bad things, but overall progress has been real good. Bateman may be the leading candidate for the first game of the season, but We'll have to sit back and wait to see if Barrett really improved a lot from spring camp for coaches to be comfortable wit him. I have a feeling that the competition will be fierce and close battle in the fall camp between Bateman, Cornwell and Barrett. Hurt may be in mix, but his lack of experience will hurt him eventually.

Nobody like Savage openly came out and gave analysis of Sims though. I doubted his ability, I'm glad I was wrong. I'm also not in the same stratosphere as Phil Savage when it comes to quarterback analysis. This observation should be heeded.

Certainly don't see myself as an expert on this...I just like to talk about it. However, Barnett may know our system inside and out by now, but He struggled in the spring with making "in game" decisions which are often dictated by the defense...what they give or what they take away or what they trick you into thinking they are giving you and then they take it away.

From my arm chair qb position, what I kept hearing last spring and then what I actually saw during the game is the Bateman didn't take many chances but he didn't make many mistakes but he also didn't move the ball that well (granted, he was going against our first team). Barnett, moved the ball pretty good (going against the second team) but he also would follow a great throw up with a questionable one into coverage.

Bateman seemed afraid to make a mistake and Barnett seemed to take too many chances. But if the reason Bateman didn't take the chances is because of arm strength then I see that as a limiting factor to his success in our offense. If Barnett learns to take a sack or preferably throw it away or scramble and get a small gain instead of taking a snack as opposed to throwing INTs he'll take a huge step forward to becoming THE GUY.

Of course, that applies to any of the qbs at this point.

Could that be because Blake didn't go to the Manning Passing Academy like Cooper did?

Re: 2016 Season QB Thread (Moved QB Posts from Practice Thread)

But in this case, there is no question that Sims could throw a very nice deep ball, so even if he would have seen him he wouldn't have questioned his arm strength. But with this analysis by Phil Savage, there is the real possibility that Cooper Bateman may have a serious flaw in arm strength.

Re: 2016 Season QB Thread (Moved QB Posts from Practice Thread)

FWIW, I don't think any Bama fan should get real worked up over this report because CLK has proven we don't need to worry about qb play.

If Bateman can't do it, CLK will get Barnett, Cornwell or the true freshman ready (:eek2:). :BigA:

I still don't know how we lost to OSU.

I've never made the comparison, but BS was just about as elusive as David Palmer, who was a great receiver and punt returner, but also played a little qb.

Question: What would CLK had done with David Palmer?

Re: 2016 Season QB Thread (Moved QB Posts from Practice Thread)

Blake threw a decent deep ball but it was always an air ball. He had no zip on his deep balls nor could he fit it in tight windows. He was a great college athlete and QB but couldn't do it at the next level.

You'd always rather have a solid deep-ball thrower but I think we can mold an offense that is good enough without it. If the QB can hit short and medium stuff, hopefully he can still hit some easy over-the-top throws as the run and short pass creeps the defense up.

That was our strategy with Blake Sims mostly...
