2019 Spring Practice Thread

Anoma needs to be a big factor this year for the defense to be successful. We can't trust that Lewis will be 100% honestly. Hoping for the best in that regard.
Other than his short profile I didnt see anyone mentioning the overall performance of the D-line.

Saban remarked that the OLB group performed very well in the first scrimmage. He has also made a few comments about the DL, all positive. My DL concerns are two fold - lack of experienced depth and the up and down play of Davis. Need Davis to play up his potential on a consistent basis this season.

I agree with you on the depth of the DL and consistent play from Raekwon. I think the biggest thing in building depth behind Ray, Mathis and Davis.

Saw a tweet about the average size of our OL. Lots of new faces there, but these guys are BIG!!! I think this bodes well for a return of controlling the OL and pounding the ball when we want/need to. Of course, having Tua when we want/need to throw should make this an incredibly balanced offense.

I feel like they are going to have to move somebody from outside to ILB. I realize they are different positions but ultimately they are football players, they read the defense and destroy things.

Kaho appears to be dealing with things and he needs size, Moody was a developmental player, probably not ready for prime time, McMillon's a senior without much success, Benton is the starter and I don't know if he's got the speed to cover the field. Shane Lee is the only freshman I think we signed that may have the body for it. King Mwikuta could do it possibly if he's been hitting the weights.

I wonder if Chris Allen could do it, he's big enough, I thought he was athletic before he got hurt last year. Anoma's big enough as well. I don't know much about Parks. It's weird that we are having this problem after spending the first decade under Saban as Linebacker U.

Kaho has been back at practice and only missed the first two or three. Moody was seen as a "development" player because he was a late bloomer and not heavily publicized by the recruiting services; some within the program feel he can be a stud.

Who said Benton is the starter?

Going to presume you didn't mention 32 because it's a given he's the guy at ILB?

McMillon was the starter in the first scrimmage. I don't think he is the answer and hope Kaho learns his assignments and gets a little bigger/stronger.

Wednesday, April 3 practice report

Probably haven’t made this quite clear: Markail Benton and Jaylen Moody have been paired together as the second string inside linebackers. Ale Kaho has been with Shane Lee with the threes.

in some of the video posted in the news section (which is unavailable now), kalo was working with Moody and Benton was with Lee. It's hard to know who moved up or down, or if in that particular drill it was just different but it's hard to see mcMillon holding onto the WILL spot as he's more of a MIKE type.

As far as an OLB moving over, I don't see any of those guys being candidates now. allen and enoma are to big for the way our ILB's play now since they packed on the weight this offseason. Parks maybe, but he was a DE in HS so it would be a hard move. King Mwikuta is the same - DE in HS. Christian Harris (not Kevin Harris) was recruited as an ILB and I think will be very good once he learns the position. Kid has speed (played WR and DB in HS) but has ILB size so if he can learn the role could be a terror, but likely only a special team player this season as he learns.

It's on my "worry" list. Minor, but it's there...

If it’s because of a new ‘Legacy QB’ being on the team then it kind of worries me too.

The last thing we need is a Helicopter relative looking over CNS’s shoulder.

Not that you’re insinuating that.... but it’s the 1st thing I thought of wrt being worrisome.

IMO absolutely cannot get any of the ILBs hurt, especially Moses. Having said that, a plan will no doubt be in place for when we do. This is my personal biggest concern.

I know it was a fear at one point. Not sure how much of one it is now. His note presence doesn't do anything to ease those worries IMO, though.

It's also been noted that Galu Tagovailoa has attended some of the practices. I don't think CNS is too worried about it.
